2 School Counselor Role: School Counselors assist with: Social/personal/academic issues Academic planning College and career planning Sophomore Career and College Exploration Program: Career Exploration program in spring College Exploration Naviance Transcript Review Course selection review

3 What s Important Sophomore Year? Foster independence, resilience and self-advocacy Encourage problem solving Encourage extra-curricular involvement now & during the summer. Check out Student Activities link on Hall website Insist on consistent and on-time attendance Look at Power School together. Find the balance. Provide distraction free environment/routine for studying Consider attending local college fairs and taking a few preliminary college tours/visits this summer to get a head start on college planning while not overwhelming student

4 What to Expect Socially/Emotionally Friendships, dating, social media, weekend events Social circles may change/broaden May notice slight changes in personality/behavior, sleep patterns may change Students are very mindful of others taking AP courses, athletics, socially, etc. and compare themselves School/Community supports available (School Counselor, Social Worker, School Psychologist, Bridge)

6 Frequently Asked Questions School Counseling Secretary: Ms. Jean Baril: Ms. Baril can help schedule student/parent appointments, assist with transcript requests, help with PowerSchool login, answer common questions, forward messages to counselors, etc. Attendance Office:: (all absences reported here) Nurses: Kathy Wnuk & Grace Johnson: 860: or 5116 Child is absent: Students should contact teachers for homework and to make arrangements for make up quizzes/tests, etc. National Honor Society: Min. 3.6 GPA by end of first semester junior year. Additional criteria such as full-time student and leadership/good citizenship is also required.

8 Course Selection Process: 1. Teachers discuss course recommendations with students for grade 11 mid-year (typically January-February) 2. Parents and students review teacher recommendations in Powerschool. 3. Students must register for courses in Powerschool. 4. Counselors and student review placement and overall junior year course load in spring; changes can be made at this time. 5. Course verification sheets distributed to students sometime in the late spring. This is an opportunity to make changes and/or corrections to course registration as needed. 6. Changes in course registration after initial course verification can be difficult and is subject to space availability. 7. All students must be enrolled in five classes (in addition to PE/Health if applicable) per semester to be considered a full-time student (also to remain on track for a timely graduation)

10 Sophomore Year Standardized Testing for Grade 10 Wednesday, October 11, 2017: PSAT 10 (no make up date!). Testing results available sometime in mid-december Students are encouraged to utilize Khan Academy ( for PSAT/SAT preparation - a FREE personalized online tutoring program partnered with the College Board! May 1-18: AP Exam administration window May 5 and/or June 2: SAT Subject Tests (Saturday administration) Students who utilize Special Education or 504 services: Consult with case manager and counselor regarding eligibility for standardized testing accommodations.

11 SAT Subject Tests Some highly selective colleges may recommend/require a minimum of two Subject Tests for admission 1 hour test - Best taken immediately following respective course completion in May or June (can sit for up to three separate tests in one day, although only one or two is recommended) Subject Tests typcially taken by some sophomores: Math I (Alg. II), Math II (Precalc), and Biology (Honors or AP Biology) Cost: $26.00 for registration plus $21.00 per test (fee waivers available for eligible students)
