6 Types of Diplomas There are 3 major types of diplomas: Regents Diploma with Advanced Designation Regents Diploma Local Diploma (for students with an IEP)

7 Required Exams Regents Diploma 5 Regents exams: ELA Global History* US History* 1 Math exam 1 Science exam *or a Pathways assessment All 5 Regents exams > 65

9 Academic Planning Choose your course selections based on career goals and interest areas. This is a great time to explore! Make course selections carefully and thoughtfully as changes are only approved for extenuating circumstances A well planned schedule does not require changes. Schedule changes can be disruptive to the learning process.

10 9-11 Scheduling Process November 30-December 5: Scheduling presentations will be made to students in their Social Studies classes November 30-December 5: Scheduling presentations to 9th grade students. December 8: WeMoCo tour will be held for interested SHS students December 11-14: Counselors will meet with Juniors in PE/Dance Excel classes December 19: New Visions presentation for interested Juniors

11 9-11 Scheduling Process (cont d) December 6-January 26: Ninth grade course selection will be held out of Study Halls January 5-17: Counselors will meet with Sophomores in PE/Intro to Dance/Dance II classes Spring: Alternate course selections if needed for courses cancelled due to low enrollment Spring: Roster of course selections will be mailed to parents Spring: Counselors will meet with students and parents to discuss concerns with course requests

12 8-9 Scheduling Process First week in December: Scheduling presentations in 8th grade classes; students will be introduced to the process of scheduling, the forms, the online course handbook and the electives Students should discuss course options with parents (looking at the course descriptions in the course handbook) and decide on what courses would be best for them

13 8-9 Scheduling Process December - January: Counselors will visit classrooms and meet with students individually to assist them with completion of course selection forms

15 IB Diploma or Certificate Student? IB Diploma Student Will take 6 IB courses 3 HL and 3 SL Will take 1 course from each group Can replace Group 6 choice Must complete the core: TOK, CAS, and Extended Essay Earns 24 points to acquire the Diploma Maximum is 45 Certificate Student Select courses based on interest and/or strengths Earns marks for individual courses, which may translate into college credit. EVERY student can benefit from taking at least one IB course!

17 The IB Core Theory of Knowledge (TOK) Runs over the course of the Junior and Senior year Open to ALL students Creativity, Activity, and Service (CAS) 150 hours over 18 months Extended Essay (EE) 4,000 word research paper

18 IB vs. AP IB DIPLOMA PROGRAM IB courses are for students worldwide. IB instruction focuses on the breadth & depth of learning. IB has multiple assessments-students are assessed on a body of work, including internal & external assessments. IB final score uses a 1-7 scale. IB diploma program is interdisciplinary. IB students can earn an IB Diploma. AP COURSES AP courses are for students in the U.S. AP covers more topics, not as much depth. AP has a single assessment in May. AP final score is uses a 1-5 scale.

19 IB Diploma Students Possess skills required to be independent learners, including critical thinking skills. Become learners who appreciate all cultures and treat all with mutual respect, dignity, and honesty. Have higher acceptance rates to colleges because they have the scope, depth, skills, leadership, & confidence. Perform better in post-secondary education than their peers.
