Top 10 Things Colleges Look For: A challenging high school curriculum Strong grades and an upward trend Solid scores on standardized tests Quality involvement in activities A record of community service Work or out of school experiences A well-written essay Positive recommendations from school personnel Additional recommendations from adults who know the student well Special attributes or awards
What are colleges saying now? Institutions are familiar with the multidisciplinary endorsement (4X4) Current HS coursework requirements for specific colleges College English Math Science Social Studies Foreign Lang UT 4 4 including Alg I & II, Adv Math A&M 4 4 including Alg, I, Alg II, Geom 4 including bio, chem, physics 2 Texas Tech Baylor 4 4 including Alg I, Alg II, Geom 4 including bio, chem, 3 2 Texas State UofH 4 3 including Alg I, Alg II, Geom 2 including bio, chem or physic 3 2 UTSA Some institutions prefer 3 years of the same foreign language. Specific majors vary on HS coursework requirements so be sure to check with your preferred institution!
What stands out to colleges? Growth and potential Interests and activities Character and personality Contribution to the college
# 4 Build Résumé Get Involved!
Get Involved! Make your years as a Mustang GREAT! Extracurricular Activities that you are INVOLVED with not merely a member. Join a UIL team: Athletics, Fine Arts program, UIL Academic team Join or Start a Club run for office, chair a committee Outside of school activities church, scouts, club sports
Volunteer Hours Any activity that benefits others for which you do not receive payment. (tutoring, babysitting, yard work, organized activities, mission trips) Begin NOW volunteering in the community, at school, or with your church Keep folder with record of hours accumulated More important than the number of hours, the lessons you learn/how service affects you. Write down a few notes you can use later for essays/résumé. Display of commitment to a specific cause; more important to college application than multiple short term volunteer activities.
