14 TEXAS SUCCESS INITIATIVE requires students planning to attend a Texas public college/university meet college entrance exam standards in READING, MATH, and WRITING to enter into college level course work. Students failing to meet minimum passing standards MUST be placed in developmental programs/classes. 16 NCAA ELIGIBILITY (REGISTER EARLY-DON T WAIT UNTIL YOUR SENIOR YEAR) 16 core courses required for eligibility as determined by the NCAA GPA in 16 core courses is not the same as the cumulative GPA on a transcript. 18 COLLEGE APPLICATIONS Apply Texas used for all Texas state schools Top 10% Automatic Admissions Texas state public colleges and universities Application and supporting materials must be completed and submitted on time Class of 2017, Top 7% for UT-Austin Class of 2018, Top 7% for UT-Austin Private universities have their own applications or may use the National Common Application

19 4 MAIN STEPS FOR COLLEGE APPLICATIONS Fill out each application carefully and thoroughly, including required essays (most are done online) Request an official transcript from the registrar s office Can be mailed or sent electronically to the college before or after the application is complete Have SAT/ACT test scores sent to the college from the testing agency (before or after application is complete) Apply to all schools by winter break if possible Must meet prospective school s deadline Photocopy all materials

20 APPLICATIONS REQUIRING COUNSELOR INPUT AND/OR LETTER OF RECOMMENDATION 3 WEEKS ADVANCE NOTICE is mandatory for all recommendation letters or college forms requiring counselor input First, order an official transcript in the registrar s office Next, fill out a Student Profile Packet available in the counseling office Finally, make the request by opening a senior folder with lead counselor s secretary and submitting the following materials: Student Profile Packet Any necessary application forms and deadlines

21 FINANCIAL AID AND SCHOLARSHIPS The Cy-Fair High School website is updated frequently to include scholarship/financial aid opportunities. The counseling office houses scholarships applications in the scholarship drawer. Please go to the counseling office for more information and to find applications. 23 DUAL-CREDIT VS. ADVANCED PLACEMENT (AP) Dual-Credit Advanced Placement - AP Become enrolled with Lone Star Cy Fair College and HS campus course Pay fees for a typical one-semester course, most cost approximately $66 Grade in course determines credit; must earn a C to receive college credit. Credit at a community college transfers to the majority of Universities in the US Enroll in high school AP course only Pay for AP exam (approximately $94) Score on one test determines credit University determines whether test score is acceptable and type/amount of credit. Accepted nationally at universities and colleges.
