Grandparents Day Thank you to all of our families for supporting Grandparents Day this year. The hall was overflowing with Grandparents and Special Friends. I am sure everyone enjoyed the Prep s performance of Down By the Bay and 1C/1T S Japanese performance. I want to thank all of the Prep teachers, Mrs Hawkins and Chile Sensei for organising the performances. Well done to the Camerata Strings, Junior Choir and Jazz Band whose performances were outstanding, especially the Camerata Strings who performed without Miss Sly. I would like to thank all of the parents for providing the shared morning tea. Thank you as well to our teachers and teacher aides who made the organisation look easy, however let me assure you it was quite complex. I sincerely thank parents for the community support the school receives for our special events and occasions 1

Regional Sports District athletics was held this week with a large number of our Wellers Hill students competing across multiple events and age groups. This year we had an impressive number of our students place in the medal positions: Bill G (Boys 10) 1 st in 100m & 200m Sean S (Boys 11) 1 st in Long Jump, 2 nd in Shot Put & High Jump, 3 rd in 100m & 200m Juliet (Girls 12) 1 st in High Jump Lashitha T (Girls 10) 1 st in Multi Event & 2 nd in Discus Isabel H (Girls 11) 2 nd in Shot Put Along with this impressive medal haul, we have the following students qualify for the upcoming regional athletics championships to be held in September: Bill G Sean S Juliet T Kai F Lashitha T Cooper J Well done and good luck to all the students. Teacher Quality and Beginning Teachers There has been a significant amount of discussion in the media lately about the quality of beginning teachers. I am writing to support our first and second year teachers and indicate to all parents that our younger teachers are all exceptional. I am very proud of the work they do with students and the way they connect with senior staff in the school. Beginning teachers are just starting out in their career and understandably do have a bit to learn along the way, and we are grateful to our senior teachers who support them in this journey. However, young teachers also have a great deal to offer, such as ICT skills and levels of creativity that constantly amaze me. Their willingness to share this with senior teachers is appreciated and enthusiastically received. I honestly believe this is the normal across all schools and that our media needs to recognise the need to support teachers in the very difficult and challenging job they do rather than constantly pulling them down. School Opinion Survey Parents received individual passwords and codes to complete the School Opinion Survey 2018. This must be completed by the end of next week. If parents have not already done so, it would be appreciated if you could complete the survey. Have a great week. Kind regards John 2

In Week 9 (10th-14th September), we will be celebrating Book Week at Wellers Hill State School. Listed below are some of the activities that will be held during that week. Monday 10th September: 2.15-2.45 Reading on Rugs- Whole School Wednesday 12th September: 9.30am Prep to Year 2 Dress-Up Parade in the Hall. The theme for Book Week is "Find Your Treasure- Australia". Some ideas for Dress-Up could be: Australian Animal Cowboy Cowgirl Farmer Australian Bush Wednesday 12th September: 3-4.30pm Activity Afternoon (Whole School) JLW Area. There will also be a Book Fair in the Library during this week- I will put the times in the Newsletter closer to Week 9. With the terrible drought that has been experienced for the last few years, I thought this year our school could donate the money raised to the "NEED FOR FEED" Campaign run by the Lions Club. I am going to run a GIANT multi-draw raffle during book week so I am looking for as many prizes as possible. If you are able to make a donation or know a business that could contribute towards the raffle this would be greatly appreciated. If you require a letter from the school explaining the fundraiser this can be collected from the library on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday or at the office Thursday and Friday. Any donations can be left at the Library or school office. We are hoping to run a Bush Dance to raise funds on Saturday 15 th September More details to follow. Looking forward to a fun week. Kind Regards, Bernadette Hoffman 3

Times to be confirmed) Sunday 11 th November - RSL Remembrance Day Ceremony at Ekibin Park Memorial - Senior Concert Band to perform BAND & STRINGS 2019 RECRUITMENT Wellers Hill State School has a proud history of providing an exceptional instrumental music program. Education Queensland provides staff and time allocations for the program which is further financially supported by the school. Places are limited for recruitment and selection into either the band or string program involves an in-depth process designed to match musically minded students to an instrument to which they are physically suited, while creating balanced ensembles. The String Program commences in Year 2 (violin, viola, cello, double bass) and the Band Program commences in year 4 (flute, clarinet, bass clarinet, alto sax, tenor sax, french horn, trumpet, trombone, euphonium, tuba, percussion). The recruitment process into either program 4

commences in semester 2 the year prior. Commitment to either program is for the duration of primary school. The Department of Education provides funding for students to participate in one program only. Therefore, students who agree to participate in the string program will not be eligible to join the band program. If your child is wanting to join the band program they will need to decline a string offer and wait until year 4. Selection to the program is as follows: 1. Musical Aptitude Test is completed by classroom music teacher for all year 1 & 3 students 2. Student Profiles created on each student by classroom teachers 3. Parent Information Evening (invited students and parents) 4. Physical Testing and sizing of students on instruments 5. Student Preference Completed (band only) 6. Students selected to an instrument based on results from the above procedures combined with ensemble balance The Parent Information Evening will be held on Wednesday 12 th September and attendance is compulsory if you wish your child to be considered for the program. Attendance is by invitation however if your child does NOT receive an invitation to attend, you are welcome to attend and we will take your details for further consideration. Please be aware, an invitation to the Information Evening does NOT guarantee a place in the program. The evening is to provide you the information you need to make an informed decision on whether you would like your child to join the program. As places are limited, entry into the program is in high demand and selection is based on results of the processes listed above. Recruitment updates will be posted regularly in the school newsletter under Instrumental Music and invitations to the Parent Information Evening will be sent home on Monday 3 rd September. We had a number of our students qualify for the upcoming Regional Athletics Carnival that will be held at the end of this month. Those students should have collected or received their paperwork and need to make sure that it is returned to the district office by the due date. All students that have qualified have been given an updated due date for the paperwork. District Sports Trials Information regarding district sport trials will be published in the school newsletter as it comes to hand. We make up just one school of more than 30 schools in our district so spaces at trials are normally limited to five students, maximum, per school. As such, not all students who ask to go to district trials can 5

be considered, with preference given to 12 year old s first (as per district school selection policy) and those with more experience including club representative teams. Please keep an eye on the newsletter to find out what trials are occurring so that you don t miss out. Mt Gravatt District Girls & Boys Cricket Trials Mt Gravatt District trials for Cricket will be on this term. If you play Cricket at a high standard, see Mr Grennan for more information. Please note details have not yet been released for this trial. Also note that school nominations are limited with preference given to students turning twelve as per Mt Gravatt District Sport policy.
