BRYNEVEN PRIMARY SCHOOL SPORTS AWARDS POLICY AND CRITERIA Disclaimer: Please take note this policy and its contents will be constantly updated, as the different external sports associations (that Bryneven Primary School offers as official sporting codes) change their policies. Bryneven Primary School will have to amend or update this policy and its contents to be in line with that particular organization. The awarding of any recognition or award is reserved to the Head Coach/Co-ordinator of the particular official sporting code in question. Where there is still uncertainty, a decision will be reviewed and finalized by the Bryneven Colours Committee. Non school sports will receive awards in accordance with the non-school sports policy on page 1. Awards will only be awarded to pupils who participate in school sports. If learners participate in sports not offered by Bryneven Primary School and achieve in these other sports, associated/registered with NOCSA and inform their coaches or the school, they will receive acknowledgement in the school newsletter/morning line-up/special assembly. If they give their certificate(s) or medal(s) to the principal s secretary, these will be awarded to the learner in assembly or morning line-up (not at Sports Awards Evening). Learners will be permitted to wear their provincial/national tracksuit on the last Friday of each month during the school term. White blazers are no longer issued. 1) Colours (BLUE RIBBON) and Half Colours (YELLOW RIBBON) (Points allocation for awarding Sportsman/Woman of the year: Full Colours = 10 points Half Colours = 7 points) The recipient will receive a scroll and certificate for a Half Colour Award and a scroll, certificate and medal for receiving a Full Colour Award. Each Sporting Code has a specific criteria decided on by the schools Colours Committee, which will comprise of two members from the school SGB and two members of staff who are involved with sport at a senior level. Scrolls to be awarded (i.e.) Half Colours etc. for all learners at the end of every term. Certificates do not have to be printed. At Sports Awards Evening it will be re-awarded with the certificate. 2) Merit Award (Points allocation for awarding Sportsman/Woman of the year: Merit Award = 5 points) Awarded to children in any grade/ any age group. The recipient will receive a merit badge and certificate for a Merit Award. Each Sporting Code has a specific criteria decided on by the Sporting Committee. 1
3) Sportsmanship (Points allocation for awarding Sportsman/Woman of the year: Sportsmanship = 1 point) Awarded to children who represent Bryneven Primary School at any sporting code. The recipient must have shown commitment, dedication, sportsmanship and loyalty both on and off the field The recipient will receive a certificate e.g. Sportsmanship, Soccer U/12 Each Sporting Code has a specific criteria decided on by the Sporting Committee. 4) Most Improved Awarded to children who represent Bryneven Primary School in any team. The recipient must have shown improvement and perseverance. The recipient will receive a certificate e.g. Most Improved, Soccer U/12 Each Sporting Code has a specific criteria decided on by the Sporting Committee. 5) Criteria for awarding Colours, Half Colours, Merits, Most Improved and Special Mentions Athletics Full Colours Win all inter-house and league meetings in same year (in both sprints and middle distance). Only applicable from Grade Six to Half Colours School Individual Record Breaker. Only applicable from Grade Five to Merit Award First position for all inter-house events. First position for 400m/800m, 80m and learner must have participated in relay events despite position. The Victor and Victrix Ladorum winners will receive a merit. Sportsmanship Representation at every meeting showing commitment, dedication, sportsmanship and loyalty both on and off the field. Inter-house winners for each age group to receive a certificate, but not presented at Sports Awards Evening. Claire Lownie Trophy is awarded to the most promising Grade Seven boy and girl athlete. 2
Chess Full Colours National and Provincial Representation. Only applicable from Grade Six to Half Colours Regional Representation. Must play board 1 or 2. Only applicable from Grade Five to Merit Award Must play board 1 or 2. Sportsmanship Representation at all league matches showing commitment, dedication, sportsmanship and loyalty both on and off the field. Cricket Full Colours Gauteng A Provincial representation. Half Colours Regional. Only applicable from Grade Five to Merit Area cricket NSSSC. Grade One to GCPSC Gauteng Central Primary School Cricket. Sportsmanship Representation at all inter school matches showing dedication, Most Improved - Recipient must have shown improvement and perseverance Cross Country Full Colours Provincial Representation. Only applicable from Grade Six to Half Colours Regional Representation. Only applicable from Grade Five to Merit Award Area or District Representation. Grade One to Sportsmanship Representation at all inter school meetings showing dedication, Full attendance at practice sessions. Most Improved - Recipient must have shown improvement and perseverance at meetings and should have participated in at least three out of the four meetings. Inter-house winners for each age group to receive a certificate, but not presented at Sports Awards Evening. 3
Hockey Full Colours Selected for Southern Gauteng A Team. Only applicable from Grade Six to Half Colours - Selected for Southern Gauteng B Team or non-travelling reserve. Only applicable from Grade Five to Merit Award Area or District Representation regardless of team. Sportsmanship Representation at all inter school meetings showing dedication, Most Improved - Recipient must have shown improvement and perseverance Team: Full Colours Win Champions of Champions Tournament. Senior A Team. Half Colours Winning District and runners-up Champions of Champions Tournament. Only applicable from Grade Five to Merit Award District runners-up Winners of Inter-school Tournament will receive a certificate. Netball Full Colours Regional Representation. Only applicable from Grade Six to Half Colours. GSS team selection. Only applicable from Grade Five to Merit Award Second level District Selection. Sportsmanship Representation at all inter school matches showing dedication Most Improved - Recipient must have shown improvement and perseverance Team: Full Colours Win regionals. Only applicable from Grade Six to Half Colours Win District. Only applicable from Grade Five to Merit Award Runners-up District Winners of Bryneven or Bryanston Netball Tournament will receive a certificate. Winners of Montrose Netball Tournament will receive a merit. 4
Soccer Full Colours - Bill Stewart Tournament A Team. Only applicable from Grade Six to Grade Seven. Half Colours - Bill Stewart Tournament B/C Team. Only applicable from Grade Five to Merit Participate at Discovery Festival Sportsmanship Representation at all inter school matches showing dedication Team: Full Colours Knock-out Cup winners. Only applicable from Grade Six to Half Colours Knock-out Cup runners up. Only applicable from Grade Five to Merit Knock- out Cup winners. Grade One to Grade Four. Winners of Bryneven, Bryanston or Montrose Soccer Tournament will receive a certificate. Girls Soccer: Sportsmanship- Representation at all inter- school matches showing dedication Most improved - recipient must have shown improvement and perseverance. Winners of the Montrose Soccer Tournament will receive a certificate. Swimming Full Colours SA National Junior Age Group. Only applicable from Grade Six to Grade Seven. Half Colours CGA Level 3 swimming time. Only applicable from Grade Five to Grade Seven. Merit Award CGA Level 2 swimming time or breaking school record. Sportsmanship Representation at every meeting showing commitment, dedication, sportsmanship and loyalty. Inter-house winners for each age group to receive a certificate, but not presented at Sports Awards Evening. 5
Tennis Full Colours Provincial Representation. Only applicable from Grade Six to Half Colours Regional Representation. Only applicable from Grade Five to Merit Award Win Championships Sportsmanship Representation at every meeting showing commitment, dedication, sportsmanship and loyalty 6) SPORTSMAN and SPORTSWOMAN OF THE YEAR AWARDS The following points system will be used when judging the above awards: Full Colours - 12 points Half Colours - 7 points Merit Award - 5 points Senior / Junior Player of the Year / - 4 points Headmasters / Super striker / Peach Trophy Victor / Victrix Ludorum winners - 4 points Best Player In Age Group - 3 points Tennis Championship, winner of Singles/Doubles/Mixed Doubles - 3 points The winner will be the boy or girl with the most points. If the points are tied the award could be shared. The Sportsmanship Trophy will be given to the Grade Seven learner who the Sport Coordinators believe has shown commitment, dedication and good sportsmanship.
