Department of Physical Education ANNUAL REPORT- 2010 APRIL TO 2011 MARCH 1.0 INTRODUCTION.. 1.1 Objectives: Right from the inception of Calicut REC in 1962, our objective has been that of FITNESS FOR ALL which continues in the NIT Calicut mode as well. 1.2 Education System : 1. Compulsory OT-Credit (ZZ1093) for first year students, 2. Voluntary physical education for senior students. 3. Mass participation in-campus activities. 4. Intramural interclass tournaments. 5. Spotting talents, providing specialist training. 6. Participation in district, state, interuniversity and inter NIT tournaments. 1.3 New Initiatives: Inclusion of Olympic Values Education Programme in curriculum. 2.0 AN OVERVIEW. 2.1 Courses Offered : One-credit course in Physical education ZZ1093 including Olympic Values Education Programme. 2.2 PHYSICAL EDUCATION in a nutshell : Unlike the REC days where physical education and sports was a voluntary activity and optional in the curriculum, the NIT scenario has physical education as a compulsory entity in the curriculum. The OT programme included in the time table comprise of Class-room orientation of freshers and a one-credit course in physical education (Code: ZZ1093). Mass participation and interclass activities ran simultaneously aiding in talent search, formation of institute teams and exposing them in as many interscholastic tournaments as possible. The participation percentage during 2010-11 has touched an all-time high of 45%. In the year 2010-11, in commemoration of the Golden jubilee, we introduced Olympic Values Education programme in the one-credit course stressing on character development through sports & event-managerial abilities. The total number of students who successfully underwent the credit course during 2010-11 is as follow: (1) Monsoon semester : 243 & (2). Attended 7 th International Conference on Sport, Education & Culture at Durban, South Africa on 4-7 December 2010. 4.0 TEACHING PROGRAMMES. 4.1 Courses Offered : Class-room orientation of freshers and One-credit course in physical education (ZZ1093) including Olympic Values Education Programme, a course intended to inculcate values, character through sports and event-managerial abilities in students. The courses were included in institute time-table. The number of students who earned the credit: (1) Monsoon semester : 243 & (2). Winter semester : 519 5.0 Physical Education Activities Conducted during 2010-11 Activities commenced in last week of July 2010 with the class room orientation for freshers followed by one-credit course in August 2010. Talent spotting was completed in November 2010 prior to end-semester exams and NITC teams in all games were selected. Golden Jubilee Mega Coaching Camp was conducted for all NIOTC teams during 1 st to 16 th December 2010. Teams were soon sent out to participate in National level Inter NIT tournaments at various NITs of the country. Being the golden jubilee year, we decided to give maximum exposure to our teams. Tournaments attended were as follow: a) Inter NIT Basket ball tournament for boys and girls at NIT Trichy. b) Inter NIT swimming competition for boys at NIT Rourkela. c) Inter NIT Volley ball for boys at NIT Durgapur. d) Inter NIT Games fest at MNIT Jaipur. e) Inter NIT sports meet at NITK Surathkal. f) Inter Professional SPREE tournament at BITS Goa campus. In-Campus Mass Participation Activities were conducted in grand fashion to commemorate our jubilee year. Tournaments were held in Cricket (Nano-cricket & 2
Willow cup) and Foot ball ( FORZ Soccer & Shyam-Ashok memorial Monsoon cup). These activities attracted over a thousand students and exhibited the managerial prowess of student-organisers. Golden Jubilee Inter NIT and Invitation tournament were organized as part of the jubilee celebrations. A social-interaction foot ball tournament was conducted for invited professional teams and the winner, the AWH College of Engineering was awarded the Golden Jubilee Cup. A golden jubilee Inter NIT tournament was also hosted during the year for boys and girls in T-20 Cricket, Table tennis, Tennis and Badminton. The students of Olympic values education programme (OVEP)assisted in organizing the event. As usual, the Intramural interclass competition was held for both boys and girls. Participation was total and the organization was by OVEP students. Kozikode District League championship is one tournament we frequent every year. Participation was complete in events like Foot ball, Cricket, Basket ball, Badminton, Volley ball, Hockey, Table tennis and Tennis. Annual Sports Convocation was held where all outgoing sports men and women were presented with certificates and mementos. 6.0 ACHIEVEMENTS 2010-11. Name of the team Award/ Laurel won 1. 8.0 Enhancing Physical facilities (Games & Sports) During the year, we developed one of the best cricket infrastructure on our campus which includes a turfed 80 mtr. Radius cricket field with 4 intenational standard turf wicket strips. The Players dressing room and the Umpires room were renovated to standard level at the expense of Kerala Cricket Association. The stadium which has all paraphernalia required for conducting first class matches was inaugurated by Mr. T C Mathew, Secretary, Kerala Cricket Association on 26-11-2010 and national level Vijay Merchant trophy tournament was held during November 2010 to January 2011. 8.1 Other facilities in full swing on the Campus include: Foot ball field, Hockey field, a second Cricket field, Floodlit Tennis Complex(3 clay courts & 1 synthetic court), Swimming pool, Gymnasium, Floodlit Basket ball court, Floodlit Volley ball court, Cricket Concrete wicket, 3 Badminton courts & 5 TT facilities in Auditorium. 9.0 Publications i.
