This is an exciting time and we want to help you understand what lies ahead. We know you will have many questions as your child moves into the 6 th grade, and we are here to address those questions, as well as any concerns you may have. In this packet you will find information regarding our philosophy, beliefs, and programs. Also included is a general outline of our 6 th grade curriculum, elective course descriptions, and sports information, as well as phone numbers to help you direct any further questions that may arise. Tolt Middle School serves approximately 740 students in grades six, seven and eight. The schedule consists of six classes each day. Daily required courses are: Language Arts, Math, Social Studies, Science, PE-Tech-Art Rotation, and an Elective. Regardless of grade level, students are enrolled in math by their ability level. In addition, Tolt also offers a Multi-Age Program. The Multi-Age Program is a three-year commitment where students in 6 th, 7 th and 8 th grade take Social Studies, Language Arts and Science together. Applications to be in the Multi-Age Program are available on the Tolt website at http://tms.rsd407.org/programs/ma-info/multiage%20application%202018-19.pdf and in the main office at Tolt. Students in the Multi-Age Program will have limited availability to elective classes due to scheduling conflicts. Tolt Middle School Sports Information What sports are available at Tolt and who can participate? These sports start the first or second day of school: Boys and Girls Cross-Country (running) 6 th, 7 th and 8 th Grade Girls Volleyball 7 th and 8 th Grade Boys Soccer 7 th and 8 th Grade These sports start later in the year: Girls Basketball 7 th and 8 th Grade: Starts in October Boys & Girls Wrestling 6 th, 7 th and 8 th Grade: Starts in October Boys Basketball 7 th and 8 th Grade: Starts in January Girls Soccer 7 th and 8 th Grade: Starts in January Boys and Girls Track 6 th, 7 th and 8 th Grade: Starts in April What are the requirements for participating in a sport at Tolt? Before students can participate in any sport, they must have a physical on file with the school, and complete and submit all electronic athletic clearance forms. Register online at tms.rsd407.org/sports_activities/sports.aspx to access these forms. You will need your child s student ID number to register. (Omit the leading zero.) If you do not know this number, you can find it through Family Access. Fees: Student athletes are required to pay the $22 ASB fee by the start of practices. The sports participation fee ($80 for each sport, maximum $160 per year, family cap $320) is due the 2 nd week of practice. Scholarships are available for sports fees. Contact your student s counselor for more information. Please note it can take up to 24 hours after the receipt of the forms to clear athletes for participate. The summer is a good time to get your sports physical to avoid the rush. Tolt has a no-cut policy. Everyone can participate as long as they keep up their grades. 4

Class Offerings for 6 th Grade All students in the 6 th grade are required to take Language Arts, Math, Social Studies, Science and the PE-Tech-Art Rotation. In addition, each student will have one Elective period all year. Families will receive a letter with their student s math placement. Students will be placed in Language Arts 6 or Pre-Honors Language Arts 6 based on Smarter Balanced and MAP scores. Students may be placed in Reading Lab or Math Lab as their elective if they do not meet standard on this spring s SBAC exams. Enrollment in Special Education programs is based on eligibility and due to scheduling limitations, may eliminate or alter elective choices. 6 th Grade Elective Offerings include Debut Band, Premier Band, Choir, and Strand. See the back of the registration form for more information about these classes. Placement in elective classes is subject to master schedule constraints. 6

Mark Your Calendars For Wednesday, March 21, 6-7:30PM Tolt Middle School MPR Parents and Guardians of all incoming 6 th grade students for the 2018-19 school year are invited to come to a presentation given by our principal, Amie Karkainen. You will meet many of the 6 th grade teachers, have the opportunity to ask questions, and receive information from teachers. Parent Night will last approximately 90 minutes. ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ Students will attend a 5 th Grade Transition Event on Tuesday, June 5. Students will be bussed from their elementary school to Tolt by 2:45PM. Parents (or carpools) are required to pick up students at Tolt at 5:30PM. During the event, students will listen to presentations, have the opportunity to ask questions, meet teachers, view the TMS campus, and see what a day in middle school looks like! More detailed information and permission slips will be sent home to you at a later date. We look forward to meeting you! 7
