Summer Work Rising Fifth Graders 2018
Rising Fifth Graders, Summer 2018 Summertime! What a great time of the year! We all need time to rest and recharge. We also need time to get ready for what is to come. To help you prepare for the next school year, Lake Oconee Academy believes it is very important to retain current math and reading skills, extend knowledge into new areas, and improve areas of weakness. For fifth grade, the summer work is individualized to best meet your educational needs. Please review this summer packet and contact the appropriate teachers if further explanation of assignments is needed. We are looking forward to a great 2018 2019 school year! ELA Mrs. Bryant sara.bryant@lakeoconeeacademy.org ELA Mrs. Lewis jennifer.lewis@lakeoconeeacademy.org Math Mrs. Greene melony.greene@lakeoconeeacademy.org The Exploration Summer Work program is mandatory for upcoming 5th grade students. Summer Reading Assignment 1. Read Mr. Tucket by Gary Paulsen and take the reading counts test. 2. Read a book of choice. You may read any book on or above your lexile level and take the reading counts test on the book when finished. If the book does not have a reading counts test, you should create a 10 question, multiple choice test with an answer key to turn in the first day of school. 3. You can take a reading counts test at home by completing the following steps: Log into VMWare. You can do this by going to https://view.lakeoconeeacademy.org. Log in using your LOA log-in information. Click on Scholastic Reading Counts and log in. Click Take a Quiz. Enter the title or author s name to find the book. 3. You can also take the reading counts test in the LOA library over the summer. 4. If you are new to LOA, you will wait and take the reading counts test during the first week of school.

Basic Math Facts ( addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division) are the concepts that I feel that we need to focus on for summer work. Please work with your child to master these facts. Apps for grades 3-5 websites Worksheets: Times tables www.prodigygames.com www.commoncoresheets.com Cool Times Tables www.aplusmath.com Big Math Flash www.xtramath.org 4th grade splash Math www.funbrain.com Division! www.multiplication.com Math cards! www.iknowit.com 5th Grade Splash Math I also suggest that you get a set of multiplication and division flash cards if you do not already have them. Practicing with flash cards is also very beneficial. My goal is for the students to be able to finish paper/pencil 100 problems in 5 minutes. Please read over the letter to Mrs.greene now, and practice your math facts often. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Dear Mrs Greene I have tried my best to find time to practice my math facts in multiplication and division this summer. I am faster at my facts then I was last year, and i am now ready to concentrate on more complex math problems. I also have done some work to maintain my skills in telling time, counting money, geometry, fractions, and other important concepts. I am excited for math this year! Sincerely, (Student) (Parent)
