Earning Credits in High School Students are enrolled in 8 classes each semester. Students can earn credits by passing their classes in high school with a 60% or higher. For each class that is passed you earn a ½ credit at the end of each semester. You have the potential to earn 8 credits each year. After 4 years that could total 32 credits.
Kansas Board of Regents: Qualified Admissions Freshman Year at a 4 Year State University * In addition to USD 232 Graduation Requirements: 1 of the 3 required science credits must be from completing Chemistry or Physics
Kansas Scholar s Curriculum In addition to the USD232 requirements: 3 credits in Science: 1 credit from Chemistry AND 1 credit in Physics 2 credits World Language (2 years of the same language) Students who complete the Kansas Scholars Curriculum will be recognized at the senior breakfast and may be eligible to apply for a need-based scholarship Details are outlined in the Course Guide and DHS Website

Recommendations Made by Core Area Teachers Professional opinion, based off of performance in class and work ethic. Not a requirement Students who wish to select an Honors course without a recommendation may be allowed to do so. We highly encourage you to have a conversation with your teacher(s).
Things To Consider When Selecting Classes Did you read the course description? Is there a pre-requisite required? Are you willing to commit to the course? What commitments do you have outside of school?
Course Selection Timeline 1. Course Selection Form completed by student and parent, including signatures. 2. All forms due February 21 st LTMS-Turn in forms to your Science teacher. MCMS-Turn in forms to your Math teacher. 3. Confirmation letter mailed home March 9 th 4. Deadline to change course requests- March 30 th (You can pick up and turn in schedule change forms from your counselor.)
Course Selection Change Policy and Deadline Errors made by the school in developing the schedule. The need for the school to balance class size. Medical reason with documentation. Placement for students into Reading Support, Special Services, or Directed Study Hall classes. Request to take courses to qualify for the Kansas Scholars/Board of Regents. Failure of a course required for graduation. Failure of a prerequisite, i.e., anything that would prevent a student from going on to a requisite course as published in the Course Guide. Request to add a course required for post-secondary admissions (with documentation from the college). A student has failed with a teacher previously in a course, and he/she gets the same teacher for exactly the same course. Adding a required course in lieu of an elective class. Second semester Senior schedules may change as a result of qualifying for shortened day. Administrator approval of student enrollment in higher level course. March 30 th is the deadline to make course selection changes for all of 2018-19.

Interested in Honors Courses? The purpose of Honors courses is to prepare students to take Advanced Placement and dual credit courses for college credit. Students who enroll in Honors level courses are encouraged to take the corresponding AP or dual credit class in the course series. For example, students who enroll in Honors English 9 as a freshmen are on track to take Honors English 10 as a sophomore and then take AP Language and Composition as Junior. What Happens Next? 1. Fill out your course selection form. Choose classes that YOU are interested in. 2. The student and parent/guardian must sign the form. 3. The course selection form is due: Wednesday, February 21 st -Turn in to your Science (LTMS) or Math (MCMS) teacher. 4. Student s schedules for the 2018-2019 school year will be available at enrollment in August. Students who do not have their form filled out and signed by a Parent/Guardian will have classes chosen for them by their high school counselor.
