Ellicott School District Assessment Plan 2016-2017
District-Wide Assessments 2016-2017 State Required Assessments Colorado SAT- College Preparatory Exam (Previously CoACT/ACT ) 2017 will be the first administration of the SAT, as the student assessment for 11 th grade students. The American College Testing (ACT ) Program was previously been administered to all students in the 11 th grade. Colleges use the results to determine admission and course placement. Additionally, the state of Colorado requires that all 11 th grade students take the SAT. The Colorado Department of Education absorbs the cost of this assessment. The results of this assessment impact the ratings on the School Performance Frameworks. Additional information on the SAT can be found at: https://collegereadiness.collegeboard.org/sat Burst Burst Assessments assist with identifying students deficits in Literacy. The BURST assessments analyze data to adapt literacy intervention to student needs. These assessments fulfill the state requirements of the READ Act. Colorado Measure of Academic Success (CMAS)/Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers (PARCC): replacing TCAP/CSAP In compliance with legislation, Colorado joined the PARCC consortia as a governing member in August, 2012. PARCC is a multi-state assessment consortium that is developing shared English language arts (ELA) and mathematics assessments. As a governing member, Colorado is committed to relying on the PARCC assessment system. PARCC has ELA assessments in grades -19 and mathematics assessments in grades -9 with three high school assessments. PARCC has developed college and career ready determinations that will be based on the assessments given in 11th grade. PARCC ELA and mathematics assessments have replaced the CSAP/TCAP reading, writing and mathematics assessments. CMAS Science & Social Studies are the Colorado assessments intended to assess student proficiencies in the areas of Science & Social Studies. These assessments are aligned with the Colorado Academic Standards and are administered to students in grades 4, 7 (Social Studies) and grades 5, 8 (Science). Science will also be assessed at one grade level in the HS (date to be determined by CDE). Current Schedule (subject to adjustments): Testing Window Grade Levels Contents Online or Paper March 1- April 28, -9 CMAS: PARCC (ELA Online 2017 & Math) April 10- April 28, 2017 7 (SS) CMAS & CoAlt: Online 5 & 8 (S) Science & Social Studies March 15-April 28, 2017-11 Dynamic Learning Maps Online The results from CMAS (formerly TCAP/CSAP) achievement and growth have been used by the Colorado Department of Education to determine ratings for each school on the School Performance Frameworks and for the Ellicott School District on the District Performance Frameworks. Participation rates from all state testing have also been used for accountability purposes. 1
World-Class Instructional Design and Assessment (WIDA)- Assessing Comprehension and Communication in English State-to State (ACCESS) ACCESS for ELLs is a secure large-scale English language proficiency assessment given to Kindergarten through 12 th graders who have been identified as English language learners (ELLs). It is given annually in WIDA Consortium member states to monitor students progress in acquiring academic English. The WIDA-ACCESS addresses English Language proficiency listening, speaking, reading, and writing. School districts expect to receive the results of WIDA- ACCESS in April of the same testing year. This is an online assessment. Dynamic Indicators of Basic Early Literacy Skills (DIBELS) Next Students in grades kindergarten through fifth grade are tested using DIBELS Next. DIBELS Next assesses 4 of the 5 Big Ideas of early literacy: Phonological Awareness, Phonics, and Fluency, and Comprehension. The measures have been found to be predictive of later reading proficiency. o Phonological Awareness includes two measures: First Sounds Fluency (FSF), which determines a child s ability to identify and produce the firs sound of a given word, and Phoneme Segmentation Fluency (PSF) assesses a child s skill to produce the individual sounds within a given word. o Letter Naming Fluency (LNF) assesses a child s knowledge and ability to identify and name uppercase and lowercase letters. o Nonsense Word Fluency (NWF) assesses a child s knowledge of letter-sound correspondence as well as his/her ability to blend letters together to form unfamiliar nonsense words. o Oral Reading Fluency (ORF) is used to assess a child s ability to fluently read connected text of grade level material. This assessment is used to determine how well a student s reading development is progressing and whether that student is on the path to becoming proficient and fluent. o DAZE is a comprehension assessment in which students identify words that correctly complete cloze sentences. Students are benchmark tested three times a year: fall, winter and spring. Students who are not reading at grade-level are tested with DIBELS weekly or bi-weekly depending on placement. PSAT 10 This assessment is a required assessment for all 10 th grade students. The PSAT 10 tests the same skills and knowledge as the SAT, in a way that is appropriate for 10 th grade students. The results of this assessment can be used to qualify students for National Merit Scholarship Program and other scholarships. The Colorado Department of Education absorbs the cost of this assessment. Other Assessments Used in the Ellicott School District: NorthWest Education Association (NWEA): Measure of Academic Progress (MAP) The MAP assessments are online standardized adaptive exams in math, language, reading and science for grades -10. Kindergarten-2 nd grade are tested with Primary MAPs in Reading and Math. The Northwest Evaluation Association (NWEA) developed the MAP. The test is given via computer three times a year: fall, winter, and spring. Middle of the year testing, prior to the winter break, will focus on the following: ES-grades -5 in Reading, Math, and Science, MSgrades 7-8 in Reading, Math, Science, HS-grades 9-10, in Reading & Math. The data from each of the three assessments are used to generate student goals and as part of a body of evidence to determine placement in classes and programs. 2
Testing Windows for MAP: Testing Window Grade Levels Contents August-September -10 November-December -10 Reading, Language, Math, Science April-May -10 August - September Kindergaten-2 November-December Kindergarten-2 Reading, Math April-May Kindergarten-2 ACCUPLACER ACCUPLACER is a computer generated suite of tests that determines a student s knowledge in math, reading and writing as he/she prepares to enroll in college-level courses. The results of the assessment, in conjunction with a student s academic background, goals and interests, are used by academic advisors and counselors to place students in the appropriate college courses that meet student s skill level. AIMSweb AIMSweb is a progress monitoring system based on direct, frequent and continuous student assessment. The results are reported to students, parents, teachers and administrators via a web-based data management and reporting system to determine response to intervention. In Ellicott District, AIMSweb is used with students on a student-by-student basis. Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB) The ASVAB is one of the most widely used, multiple-aptitude tests in the world, developed and maintained by the Department of Defense. The Military uses students ASVAB scores to identify the occupations that best suit their abilities. Junior, senior and postsecondary school students can use their ASVAB scores for enlistment for up to two years after taking the test. (http://www.todaysmilitary.com/before-serving-in-the-military/asvabtest?campaign_id=sem2012:on:google:asvab_meps-asvab_testing:broad) Cognitive Abilities Test (CogAT) Screener The CogAT Screener is given to all students in grades 2 & 6, to assess student abilities in reasoning and problem solving using verbal, quantitative, and nonverbal (spatial) symbols. The results of the CogAT are used as part of a body of evidence to determine eligibility for the Ellicott District Challenge Committee. All students in grades 2 & 6 are assessed with the CogAT Screener in the fall. Kingore Observation Inventory [KOI] Teachers use this behavior inventory as part of a body of evidence for students being considered for the Ellicott Challenge Program.
Naglieri Nonverbal Ability Test The Naglieri is given to students upon recommendation to the Ellicott Challenge Program. The results are included in a body of evidence for students being considered for the Ellicott Challenge Program. Screening Assessment for Gifted Education Students [SAGES] The SAGES is given on an as-needed basis to students in grades K-8. Results are included in a body of evidence to qualify students for the Ellicott Challenge Program. End-of-Course/End of Unit Assessments Some grade levels and content areas utilize end-of-course assessments to determine proficiency and readiness for the next course. Placement decisions are made using End-of-Course/End of Unit assessments as a part of the body of evidence to make those determinations. Teacher Generated Classroom Assessments Teachers use formal and informal classroom assessments to determine student proficiency in a specific skill or skill set. Classroom assessments at all grade levels can vary in time and frequency. 4
