III Activities of the Society during the year 1992 1. Publications One issue of Mathematical Medley was published : Volume 20, Number 1 (June 1992). Another issue (Volume 20, Number 2) will be out soon. 2. Lectures Five lectures were organised during the year. The Presidential Address {item {b)) was delivered at the Society's 25th Annual General Meeting. The lecture by Professor Williams (item (a)) was organised jointly with the Department of Mathematics of the National University of Singapore. The lectures by Professor Louis Chen (item (c)) and Professor Lee (item (d)) and the workshop by Dr Lim (item (e)) were organised for secondary and junior college mathematics teachers, in conjunction with the 5th Singapore National Academy of Science Congress. The Society sponsored the workshop on complex geometry and several complex variables, which was organised by the Department of Mathematics of the National University of Singapore. The workshop was held from 8 to 14 November 1992. The invited speaker was Prof Siu Yum Tong. There were 60 participants. 39

Mathematical Competitions 1992 The Competition Subcommittee consisted of Dr Chew Tuan Seng (Chairman), Mr Hang Kim Roo, Dr Leung Ka Hin, Ms Ng Bee Huay, Dr Peter Y H Pang, Dr Roger K S Poh, Mr Tai Thiam Roo, Dr Tan Eng Chye and Dr Zhu Chengbo. "Inter-Secondary School Mathematical Competition" and "Inter-School Mathematical Competition" have been changed respectively to "Singapore Secondary School Mathematical Olympiad" and "Singapore Mathematical Olympiad". (a) Singapore Secondary School Mathematical Olympiad A total of 54 7 students from 58 secondary schools took part in the Secondary School Mathematical Olympiad on Saturday, 30 May 1992, at Hwa Chong Junior College. The individual winner, Zhong Huimin of The Chinese High School, was awarded the Liew Mai Heng Memorial Prize. (b) Singapore Mathematical Olympiad A total of 123 students from 10 junior colleges and 12 secondary schools took part in the Singapore Mathematical Olympiad on Saturday, 20 June 1992, at the National University of Singapore. The winning school, Hwa Chong Junior College, was awarded the Singapore Mathematical Society Challenge Shield and the team members were awarded the Southeast Asian Mathematical Society Prize. The individual winner, Zhong Huimin of The Chinese High School, was awarded the Singapore Mathematical Society Prize. The prize-giving ceremony was held on 2 October 1992 at Lecture Theatre 21, Faculty of Science, National University of Singapore. Professor Peng Tsu Ann, Head of the Department of Mathematics, NUS, gave away the prizes. A grant of $3000 was provided by the Ministry of Education for part of the expenses incurred in the above competitions. 4. 33rd International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO) Singapore participated in the 33rd International Mathematical Olympiad in Moscow, from 10 to 22 July 1992. The Singapore team consisted of Dr Tay Tiong Seng (Team Leader), Ms Ng Bee Huay (Deputy Leader), and the following six students: Chua Chek Beng (Hwa Chong J C), Feng Xiutao (Raffles Institution), Ben Liang Yongli (Raffles J C), Lim Chu Wee (Hwa Chong J C), Ng Chee We (Hwa Chong J C) and Andrew Teng Huei Chong (Raffles J C). Lim Chu Wee won a silver medal. Chua Chek Beng, Ng Chee We and Feng Xiutao won a bronze medal each. The Singapore team was ranked 26 among 56 teams participating in the competition. 42

The Singapore Mathematical Olympiad Traning Committee (1992) consisted of Prof Koh Khee Meng (Chairman), Dr Chan Shih Ping, Mrs Chang Swee Tong, Prof Chen Chuan Chong, Mr Foo See Bon, Mr Hang Kim Hoo, Dr He Xuming, Mr Ho Foo Him, Dr Leong Yu Kiang, Ms Lim Bee Hiong, Dr T R Nanda, Ms Ng Bee Huay, Dr Roger Poh, Dr Qu Ruibin, Dr Sun Yeneng, Mr Tan Teng Wah, Dr Tay Tiong Seng, Dr Tay Yang Chiang, Dr Wong Yan Loi. 5. Asian Pacific Mathematical Olympiad An Asian Pacific Mathematical Olympiad (APMO) was organised by Australia with representatives from Canada, Colombia, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Korea, Mexico, New Zealand, Philippines, Singapore, Taiwan and Thailand. Singapore was represented by Prof Koh Khee Meng. The APMO test was conducted separately in the participating countries and was held on 14 March 1992 for the Singapore contestants. The following students obtained the following results : Lim Chu Wee (gold), Chua Chek Beng (silver), Hung Hing Shan (silver), Ng Chee We (bronze), Andrew Teng Huei Chong (bronze), Ben Liang Yongli (bronze), Zhang Zhanwei (bronze), Feng Xiutao (honourable mention), Zeng Xiangye (honourable mention), Ng Wee Teck (honourable mention). IV School Teachers Subcommittee The School Teachers Subcommittee consisted of Mr Hang Kim Hoo (Chairman), Ms Ng Bee Huay (Secretary), Mr Ho Foo Him and Mr Tai Thiam Hoo. The Subcommittee helped in organising the Singapore Secondary School Mathematical Olympiad, the Singapore Mathematical Olympiad and in training the Singapore team for the International Mathematical Olympiad. The Subcommittee organised two talks and one workshop for secondary and junior college mathematics teachers, in conjunction with the 5th Singapore National Academy of Science Congress, see III 2 items (c), (d) and (e). Each talk was attended by about 290 mathematics teachers. The workshop was attended by about 60 mathematics teachers. V Finance This is dealt with in the Treasurer's report. The Society wishes to record its thanks to the Honorary Auditor, Dr Chan Yiu Man, for scrutinizing the accounts. 43
