1 FACULTY OF ARTS Division of Anthropology MPhil in Anthropology / PhD in Anthropology MPhil in Anthropology It normally takes two years (full-time) to complete 28 units. Students must also pass a General Anthropology Examination based on a department reading list. PhD in Anthropology The programme is research-oriented. A student may be asked to take additional courses or tutorials, and will be required to present an annual written progress report to his/her supervisor. After passing Qualifying Exams, the student advances to PhD Candidate. Within six months of candidature, the PhD Candidate must submit a Research Proposal for a project requiring nine to twelve months of fieldwork. Fields of Specialization The Division focuses geographically on Chinese culture and society (especially South China) and on East and Southeast Asian Studies. Research topics include nationalism, ethnicity, religion, gender, development and social change, urban and youth cultures, heritage management, archaeology and museology. Admission Code: ANT MPhil in Anthropology Applicants should have majored in anthropology or related fields. PhD in Anthropology Applicants should possess a master's degree in anthropology from CUHK or other recognized universities. Applicants with a background in fields other than anthropology may be considered for conditional admission. Applicants are required to furnish proof of their research capability by submitting samples of writings or publications such as thesis or project reports, and a statement of purpose (2-3 pages) describing why the applicant wants to study anthropology at CUHK and what research project the applicant proposes to carry out. 2 Division of Chinese Language and Literature The Division of Chinese Language and Literature offers diversified programmes leading to such higher degrees as PhD, MPhil and MA. The areas of research studies include Chinese Linguistics, Classical Chinese Texts, Classical Chinese Literature and Modern Chinese Literature. The Division admits local students as well as graduates from universities in Mainland China and overseas. MPhil in Chinese Language and Literature / PhD in Chinese Language and Literature s MPhil in Chinese Language and Literature The MPhil programme requires a total minimum of 24 credit hours of course work including the following courses: (1) Seminar; (2) Special Topics; and (3) Research Methods, plus a thesis. PhD in Chinese Language and Literature The programme is research-oriented. All doctoral students have to attend seminars within the normative study years and take four to six courses. If the Division deems it necessary, some students may be required to take a course on a language other than English and Chinese and meet any further requirements laid down by the Division. 3 FACULTY OF ARTS Division of Cultural Studies The Division of Cultural Studies provides multi-disciplinary programmes based in the Faculty of Arts of The Chinese University of Hong Kong. The objectives are to extend the frontiers of research in the global, regional and local culture. We encourage research into issues of culture pertinent to the local context, with an emphasis on critical theory and methodology arising from the field. 6 Division of Fine Arts The Division of Fine Arts offers postgraduate programmes in Chinese art history and creative arts with the aim of training art specialists. The increasing number of Mainland and overseas students attracted to the programmes in recent years has helped provide an international and pluralistic environment that is conductive to both learning and academic exchange. 8 Division of History The postgraduate programmes of PhD in History and MPhil in History are research oriented higher degree programmes offered by the Graduate Division of History to provide qualified students with rigorous academic training of advanced world levels. MPhil in History / PhD in History MPhil in History Students are required to complete at least 24 units (for full-time students) / 30 units (for part-time students) of courses and the MPhil thesis, and to pass the oral examination for graduation. PhD in History Students are required to complete at least 33 units (for full-time students) / 39 units (for part-time students) of courses. 10 Division of Linguistics The Division of Linguistics offers PhD and MPhil programmes in Linguistics that provide training in the core areas of general and applied linguistics. Emphasis is on the study of linguistic theories as well as the integration of theoretical study with issues of language structure, language use and language acquisition, in particular, those relevant to the local community and the Asian-Pacific region. 11 FACULTY OF ARTS Division of Music Our research postgraduate degree programmes in music are prided with the longest history and also the largest intake amongst similar programmes in Hong Kong. The research activities of the Department of Music can be subdivided into four areas of concentration: (1) Composition, (2) Ethnomusicology/Chinese music, (3) Historical Musicology, and (4) Theory. Although the four concentrations reflect recognized professional boundaries, the faculty as a whole embraces the spirit of interdisciplinary research and is actively engaged in diverse modes of scholarly inquiry. In keeping with international practice, postgraduate studies in composition lead towards the professional degree titles of MMus and DMus, while that in the other three research concentrations, ethnomusicology, historical musicology and theory, lead towards the MPhil and PhD. Our research postgraduate students, in additon to formal courses, have many other opportunities to become exposed to the latest academic research in music. The department research forum series offers a platform for faculty and PhD students to present their work in progress, and the colloquium series features guest lectures by international scholars on a regular basis. Faculty- and University-wide interdisciplinary lectures, forums and conferences, and exchange opportunities are also available.
