New After-School Activity On Tuesday, 10 October, Mr Buckner will be starting up a new After-School Activity, the Aviation Club for students of Grade 1 through Grade 12. The club will take place each week from 3.00 to 4.00pm in Room 124. Meet Our CAS Students... Jonathan, Grade 11 Why throw things away if you can make new things out of them? That s what I asked myself in my summer holidays. After taking apart an old mountain bike, I went around collecting more and more bike parts that were lying around or were assembled on broken bikes. After spray painting the frame, wheels, seat post etc. and watching several tutorials, I was finally able to assemble all the parts to make a brand-new, almost free-of-charge custom bike. European Day of Languages Grades 5 and 6 enjoyed a French breakfast in celebration of European Day of Languages on 26 September. Thanks go to Mr Walton, Ms Johnston, Mr Jones, Mr Roberts and Ms Mallon who ensured that everyone had enough to eat and that a good time was had by all. A big merci to Frau Delecate for her gracious assistance in preparing the croissants and making the Dining Hall available to us. Information on European Day of Languages may be found by searching for Council of Europe, European Day of Languages. http://www.coe.int/en/web/portal/-/26-septembereuropean-day-of-languages Library News Overdue Library Books Many students in Secondary school have overdue library books. In 1995, she moved to Bremen to join her husband, where she graduated from the University of Applied Sciences Bremen with a Master of European Studies degree. In 2011, she joined the ISB as a teacher of Chinese. Her main hobbies are travelling and cooking, and she enjoys translating between the Chinese, English and German languages. DofE Programme Course Last weekend, from Friday, 22 September to Sunday, 24 September, 12 ISB students, one external student from the Berlin International School as well as two adults took part in the first basic training course to become a DofE supervisor/assessor. This course, which has normally only been held in Elmshorn (near Hamburg) or at the DofE Germany s headquarters in Osterburken, Baden-Württemberg, is now open to candidates in Bremen at the ISB, led by Mr Bridge and assisted by Mr Buckner and Mrs Dodds. The Programme Course is an integral part of DofE Gold candidates training, of which we have several interested Grade 10 and 11 students this year. The weekend was very fruitful and the participants were very focused on all three days which, considering they (and the trainers!) were missing their weekend relaxation, was great to see. Our student participants can now go on to the next step of their Gold award, while some are also striving to become Student Mentors, assisting the DofE team with their various tasks and accompanying them on the trial and final Bronze expeditions. Take a look now at a few images reflecting the weekend. More can be seen soon on the DofE notice board at the top of the first floor staircase. 4 Parent Bulletin 29 September 2017
