West Ottawa Public Schools Preparing Students to Be College, Career and Life Ready! February 27, 2015 Macatawa Bay Newsletter 3700 140th Ave., Holland, MI 49424 Phone: 616-786-2000 / Fax: 616-786-2091 Don t Forget! Macatawa Bay Showcase: Passport to Success Tuesday, March 3 from 6:30 8:00 PM The faculty and staff at Macatawa Bay Middle School are proud to work here, and it s time for you to find out why. Please join us at our Passport to Success Showcase. Our goal is to feature programs and services that will interest parents and students that are new to our school as well as parents of students already attending. At our showcase, you will get answers to questions like: What kinds of technology are students using? How does the use of technology impact student learning? What kinds of programs are available to help students grow academically? What supports are in place to help students be successful? How can my child get involved in worthwhile extra-curricular activities? What is Parent Portal and how do I use it? How can I get more involved in my child s education? How can I help my child transition from elementary to middle school? Please note we have two sessions scheduled for a 5th-6th presentation in the cafeteria for our incoming elementary parents. Please make sure to attend at your scheduled time. Thank you. Save The Date! BLAST AT THE BAY The Blast at the Bay is coming! This all Mac Bay school event for 6th, 7th, and 8th graders will be held at Macatawa Bay on Tuesday, March 10 from 6 pm - 8 pm. There will be a DJ, dancing, pizza dinner, inflatables, candy bar BINGO, staff vs. student activities, games and more! Tickets go on sale during all 3 lunches on March 6, 9 & 10. Tickets are $3 in advance and $5 at the door. Attention: If you would like to volunteer at this event, please contact Lois Yonker at yonkerl@westottawa.net or 786-2001. If you can donate any of the following items, please drop them off at the main office or send them in with your student: 2-liters of beverages (pop, lemonade, etc) and big candy bars for Bingo prizes. We need about 100 2-liters. Thanks so much! Month Of Caring Macatawa Bay is excited to kick off its Annual Month of Caring! Because this marks the 10 th year Mac Bay has been making a difference, we have decided to support TWO special organizations! Our beneficiaries for the 10 th Annual Month of Caring will be the Northside Boys and Girls Club and Helen DeVos Children s Hospital. Throughout the Month of March, students will have the opportunity to participate in a walk-a-thon, penny wars, and a pop can drive to raise funds for the cause. Additionally, students will be able to purchase various items, such as t-shirts, lollipops, and school supplies. The culminating activity for the Month of Caring will be the Annual Student vs. Staff basketball game that will take place on March 23. To make a donation or get more information on how you can be a part of this incredible event, please contact Carrie Dewitt at (616) 786-2126 or dewittc@westottawa.net. Together we can make a difference! Math Counts Competition Results The Mac Bay Math Counts students did well in the West Michigan Regional Competition at GVSU on Friday, February 13. The Mac Bay students were: Ayisha Afrik, Jared Andrews, Brooke Drost, Derek Maas, Drew Smyke and Mac Strobel. The team placed 5th out of 11 teams competing and 84 students total. The event has 4 rounds, a sprint round of 30 questions in 40 minutes without a calculator; a target round of 8 problems in 24 minutes with a calculator; a team round of 10 problems in 20 minutes; and a countdown round. The countdown round is very exciting. The top ten scoring students from the individual rounds compete against each other in the front of the room, with buzzers, similar to a game show, in the format: students seeded 10 v 9, then the winner of that moves on to compete against student seeded 8, the winner of that moves on to compete against the student seeded 7 and so on, until there is one student left. Mac Bay placed 2 students into this countdown round. Drew Smyke finished in 5th place, and Derek Maas finished in 2nd place. Both of them qualified to move on to compete in the Michigan Math Counts State competition. Good luck to Drew and Derek!
