We gathered student feedback about key areas in their learning experience. Across the school, we had strengths in many areas, including developing democratic relationships, promoting dialogue as a means of learning, building on learner s understanding and connecting learning to student s lives. This demonstrates the strong emphasis that we place on teachers knowing where every child is at and the skills that teachers bring to develop C21st capabilities. Here are just a few of the many responses from our students to various statements; When I learn, I feel safe to take risks or voice my opinion. Our classroom is a very safe environment that allows me to take risks and voice my opinion, my teachers encourage questions and like it when student take risks. This motivates me to do so and allows me to reach my full potential. When you do this, it tells the teacher what you know about it and what you don t know. This helps them teach you what you don t know. We help each other learn As a class we believe in team work and improving everybody s knowledge. We help each other learn in all different ways. We get many ideas from each other and have a new perspective in different tasks. I enjoy working in groups because we can learn different things from each other. Giving and getting feedback challenges me as a learner Giving feedback to others allows me to identify the flaws in my own work, this helps me enhance my work. Receiving feedback helps me to notice flaws in my work that I sometimes overlook, this helps me make my work better and more in-depth. If I get positive comments and constructive criticism I can learn from my mistakes and knowledge how to develop further as well as knowing my strong areas. I learn about my strengths as a learner as well as what I can do to improve I am always encouraged by my teachers, peers and parents so I can do more and give my best in everything. It helps me to understand that making mistakes is okay and if you think something is hard, you should just persist through that situation. A great example is the learning pit. It also helps me to have a growth mindset. We discuss and question why people think the way they do My class quite often have long conversations about different points of view, this doesn t mean we don t respect them but that we are interested to know why they think this way. This helps us see different ways things can be done and different ways of thinking. We certainly have some incredible critical thinkers in our midst. FRIENDSHIP It is not always easy for children to know how to manage friendships. Problems with friends can affect how children feel about themselves and their enthusiasm for activities that involve others. Parents and carers can help children learn the kinds of friendship skills they need as they grow and develop. Learning how to make and keep friends involves a number of skills. Children learn more and more complex social skills from those around them as they grow. CORE FRIENDSHIP SKILLS FOR CHILDREN Cooperation: How to share and take turns; how to work together towards a common goal. Communication: Using words to explain what you want and listening to others respectfully; paying attention to body language making eye contact, smiling and being able to read others nonverbal cues. Understanding and Managing Feelings: Recognising and responding to feelings; Being able to express your feelings in ways that help others understand you. Accepting and Influencing Others: Recognising others needs for respect and friendship. WHAT TO DO IF A PROBLEM OCCURS Children develop friendship skills through playing with other children. Because they are learning, they are sure to have times when things do not go as they would like. When problems arise in friendships, it is important not to blame children but to show them how to find a solution. A problem solving approach is often helpful. 1. Encourage the child to describe what has happened. 2. Ask about how they felt. 3. Ask them how they think the other person might see it and how they might be feeling. 4. Get them to think of ways they might do it next time. 5. Encourage them to try a new approach get them to practise with you so they feel more confident. 6. Check back with your child to see how things turned out. Julie On Behalf of the KidsMatter Action Team
