Code: 327 Waimanalo Elementary & Intermediate Status and Improvement Report Year 2015-16 Focus On Standards Grades K-8 Contents This Status and Improvement Report has been prepared as part of the Department's education accountability system to provide regular, understandable accounts of our schools' performance and progress, as required by 302A-1004, Hawai'i Revised Statutes. Focus on Standards Description Setting Student Profile Community Profile Improvement Summary of Progress Resources Certified Staff Facilities p. 1 p. 1 pp. 2-3 p. 4 p. 5 This report describes the school and its setting; provides information about the school's administrators, teachers, students and facilities; summarizes progress made based on the school's improvement plan; and reports student achievement results along with other vital signs. Description Waimānalo Elementary and Intermediate (PreKindergarten through Eighth grade) is located in the rural community of Waimānalo on the Windward side of O ahu. The campus backdrop is the magnificent Ko olau Mountain range. The school is adjacent to and utilizes the public library. The Waimānalo Health Center, fire station, and six housing developments are close by. Also on campus is a separate preschool facility under the management of Head Start. Waimanalo s only feeder school for the intermediate division is Blanche Pope Elementary. Community partners include the Waimānalo Health Center, Waimānalo Homes Association, Kamehameha s, and Hawai i Job Corps. The Western Association of s and Colleges conducted their accreditation visit in November of 2010. Waimānalo earned a 6-year accreditation with a 3-year review. This program prepares students with skills and strategies for college and career success. AVID is designed to reach those students who are typically underserved in 4-year universities and who are the first generation of their families to attend college. The program stresses advanced coursework, rigorous curriculum, research-based classroom instructional strategies and student support. WEIS will continue its UPLINK program for middle school. UPLINK is an afterschool program for middle school students which provides them with supervised activities after school to limit at-risk behaviors during this critical time. Waimānalo Elementary and Intermediate is proud to be a model school for the Philosophy for Children (p4c) program on campus. Status and Improvement Report Community Profile Setting Year 2015-16 The Community Profile information updated in this school report reflects selected 2010 demographics for the High Complex (HSC) area in which this school resides. Profile data are based on the 2010 U.S. Census, the American Community Survey (ACS) 2006-2010 five-year estimates (centric to 2008), and the incorporation of Hawaii s HSC boundary areas with updated 2010 Census geography. Figures for educational attainment and median household income are sample estimates obtained from the ACS, adapted to conform to HSC geography, and should be considered rough approximations of census counts. Status and Improvement Report Improvement Year 2015-16 Summary of Progress Common Core Standards: Elementary and Middle Language Arts teachers continue to implement Reading Wonders and Springboard Curriculum. Elementary and Middle Math teachers continue to implement Stepping Stones and Go Math. The school has moved forward with Lucy Calkins Writing Pathways to enhance the current writing process. An on-demand prompt is used to measure pre- and post-writing performance of the students. All writing work is scored through a common rubric. Comprehensive Student Support: STAR Reading, Math and STAR Early Literacy universal screeners are administered three times a year. In addition, WEIS uses Reading Plus and Lexia to assess and enhance students reading proficiency. The RTI team meets monthly to discuss student concerns and review student data. Action plans are developed for all Tier 3 students. The team uses multiple data sources to expand levels of support. The school continues to use Vision Management as a consistent schoolwide positive behavior support method. Particular emphasis has been placed on Connectedness activities such as TARO, P4C, Advisory curriculum, UPLINK and connecting every student with a significant adult. Formative Instruction/Data Teams: Teachers currently use their curriculum-based assessments to drive instructional change. In addition to this, teachers use other assessment sources such as STAR, Reading Plus, Lexia and writing data. Educator Effectiveness: Administrators continue to use the EES system for educator effectiveness. Extensive professional development is provided for all teachers during the beginning of the year. Administration continues with coaching and making connections for teachers through the EES system. Induction and Mentoring: Induction and mentoring are provided at the district level; however, each new teacher hired to the school is provided a peer buddy who is a member of the current leadership team. Quarterly meetings are held with new teachers to allow them to voice concerns and offer suggestion on how to improve the process of support. Academic Review Team: The ART team meets quarterly to review schoolwide systems data and also to address grade team concerns regarding this data. To improve this process, the team is currently reviewing our leadership structure to revise the process based on feedback and meeting the needs of the students. Optional Additional Strategies: The school continues to grow its AVID program by including WICOR within all classrooms. Note taking, questioning and organization continue to be a focus. Teachers continue to receive professional development on WICOR. WEIS increased the number of classrooms implementing Philosophy for Children (p4c) within their classrooms. The school continues to engage our parents and communities through a wide variety of venues, such as Open House, Literacy Night, Science Night, Winter Performance, Poetry Night, AVID night, school website and Administrators attendance at the Waimanalo Neighborhood Board meeting as well as Jobs Corps Community update meeting.
