Highlands School News ISSUE NUMBER 106 DECEMBER 2017 Year 13 Earth Shattering Geography Conference Highlands School A Level Geographers joined another 2,000 students at the Dominion Theatre for one of the most popular conferences on the A Level circuit. The presentations centred around Tectonics and covered a variety of case studies and themes from Iceland s Volcanoes, Exam Tips for the Hazards unit and Mega City risk from Earthquakes. Numerous experts and university lecturers provided some fascinating in depth knowledge and experiences from their own research as students made plenty of notes. First up was Professor Iain Stuart who is the David Attenborough of the Geography World having presented many programmes on the Earth s Structure. He gave an update on Tectonics from the frontline, including the Pattern of Earthquakes in Turkey and why Istanbul should be alert. Sophie Llewellin and Lara Ojoje were lucky enough to get a picture with the star presenter before he dashed off (pictured). Some Forthcoming Geography Trips. Yr 8 Natural History Museum Earthquakes. January 18 Yr 9 / 11 Walton on the Naze spring / summer 2018 Yr 12 Enfield Town (oh yes) Spring 2018 & Barcelona Autumn 2018 Mr Kedward School Show For the last 3 months Drama, Dance and Music have been lost in the school show. Last week we finally saw the culmination of all the hard work and as we emerge from the post-show blues it s time to say a BIG thank you to all involved. The 13th-15th December saw sell out shows for High School Musical and a brilliant example of how the school show creates a community where we really are #allinthistogether. With students on stage singing, playing, dancing, acting and signing, and more students off the stage painting scenery, making props, stage managing, lighting, operating sound, editing videos and much, much more, this show was the biggest Highlands show in many years. Thank you to all parents and carers who came and saw the show, and to all of you who bought/made costumes or donated props. We much appreciate all the times you have picked up your child late from school to allow us to run just a few more scenes! I hope you can see now just how much it was worth it! Thanks to Paul Whyatt at School Life Pictures, we are able to share some beautiful shots of the show in action. You may have electronic copies of the production photos free of charge. Send an email to photographer@ntlworld.com quoting the reference number of the image/s you would like - maximum of 4 per email, please, but you may send more than one email. News from the MFL Department Year 7 Trip to the Phoenix Cinema On Friday 10th November some Year 7 students went to the Phoenix Cinema in East Finchley to watch an amazing French film Ma vie de courgette (My life as a courgette). The Oscar nominee for best animated film is a wonderfully affecting French-Swiss stop-motion masterpiece, based on Gilles Paris's book Autobiographie d'une courgette. They really enjoyed the film and learnt so much. Success Outside School King of the Ring 6th former, Naseem Miah, recently won a gold medal in a boxing competition called King of the Ring in Sweden (63 kilos category). National Team success in gymnastics Congratulations to Blake Eldridge, who represented the London region at the National Gymnastics Championships in Birmingham. Blake came 3rd in the team category and 6th overall in the individual competition. Year 8 French and Food Trip to Paris On Friday 17th November 36 Year 8 students went to a trip to France. They had an amazing experience of French culture and cuisine and it was an opportunity to encourage students to practice their language skills. They spent a day at Disneyland Paris and they visited a French Christmas market for a taste of French cuisine. Here is a quote from one of the pupils: I really enjoyed the French trip! We went to a variety of places and there were a lot of things to do. For example we went to Disneyland, we were allowed to go on many rides and buy fast passes. It was fantastic. The food, the accommodation and the activities were just amazing! (Ben Simon, Year 8)
