My name is Flor Tellez and this is your Board Report for September 25, 2012 General Parent Meeting Firebaugh High School held a general parent meeting on the evening of September 20 th The meeting was held by the administrative team and covered the following topics: 1. Review of school policies and expectations 2. Introduction of parent councils (SSC, SAC, ELAC)and updates on meeting dates and times 3. Update on upcoming events and workshops available through the college center 4. Update on important deadlines for college applications (UC and CSU deadlines, private school deadlines) 5. Introduction of Girls, Inc. services for FHS students College & Career Center Events UCLA's Bruin Ambassadors came to FHS on Thursday, September 20 th and offered college guidance during both lunches Falcon Celebration Last week, in celebration of our school's successful projected API gain and in recognition of our students positive attitude toward punctuality and the school uniform, Mr. Rua granted the student body a "free dress" day. Students were also treated to a free lunch dance and free snacks, courtesy of ASB Common Assessment Common Assessment testing will take place during the first week October, starting on October 1st. Teachers have met in their departments to review the instructional guides and assure that the standards are being covered and the students are prepared.
, Club Rush Club rush took place September 19 to 21. This year we have 34 registered clubs, the gym was full of students signing up for clubs. There's no doubt that Firebaugh students and teachers are taking initiative to get involved with school this year. El Camino El Camino college courses started yesterday, September 24, 2012. Classes being offered include human development, sociology, theatre. Pep Rallies ASB will be hosting a pep rally Thursday, September 27, 2012 to get students excited about back to school night On October 5, 2012, there will be a pep rally promoting the first home varsity football game of the season. A modified bell schedule will allow all students and teachers to participate and show their spirit. Athletics On September 28, falcons football team will play against Village Christian School On October 5 th will be our first home game against Xavier Prep. We hope to see fans to continue to cheer on our football team Golf girls are playing a cluster game on September 26 at Gahr home course The girls golf team will also be playing on October 1 at Warren's home course and on October 2 at Los Amigos Course Girls' volleyball will be playing an away game today, September 25 at 1:15PM at Century High schoo!. Board members are always encouraged to come support our athletes. Senior Parent Meeting This Thursday, September 29, 2012 we will have a mandatory senior parent meeting at 5:00 PM. The meeting will include information about the senior spirit packs, senior contract, and class ring information as well as upcoming college workshops for senior parents and students. Back to school night! Back to school night will be taking place On September 29, 2011 at 6:00 PM; ASB will be giving out free coffee for students and parents and will also be selling donuts. We invite the superintendent and board members to drop by and grab a free cup of coffee and welcome parents to our back to school night. We hope to see you all there. College Week- Last week we hosted our annual college week. On Wednesdays many of our Knights dressed with college gear. And on Thursday we had a USC vs. UCLA pep rally where students and teachers played a variety of games. Unfortunately, teachers supporting UCLA won that round, but USC teachers have challenged them to a re-match and I'm sure the Trojans will come back and beat UCLA!!! Fight on! We also had an essay and art contest. Students were encouraged to depict a Knights Journey to College in an essay or art work. Winners will be announced this week. Teachers were also asked to participate in a door decorating contest. Their doors showed their college spirit. Senior Parent Meeting- Lynwood High School administrators are hosting a senior parent meeting today September 25 th. The purpose of the meeting is to inform parents about senior activities, graduation information and the college application process. Morning Tardy Sweeps - The Lynwood High School started our week with morning tardy sweeps. Our morning bell rings at 8 am which means all students should be in class by that time. Anyone who is not in class by that time is considered tardy and sent to the PAC to get a tardy pass and demerits. This has been encouraging our Knights to get to school early. Football- On September 14 Lynwood High School yelled victory in our game against Lancaster High School. We hope to win our next game on Friday September 28 against Mountain View High School. This will be the last game played in Lynwood Middle because our next game will be our Homecoming game and it will be played at HOME at our brand new Lynwood High School stadium. Once again I would like to thank the board members on behalf of our Lynwood Knights and we hope to see every single one of you there on October 19 th.
UC Application Session - On Thursday September 27 th at 3:15 we will be having a UC application session. The purpose is to inform students of the process of the UC application and to encourage all of our Knights to apply to college. College Fair - On Saturday September 29 th more than 150 students will be going to the Pasadena Convention Center to attend a college fair. Students will be able to choose from over 40 workshops on how to prepare, apply and pay for college. Campus Beautification- Two of our clubs, MEChA and JuCris got together and organized a campus beautification that will take place Saturday September 29 th. This will give our students the opportunity to gain community service hours or merits, not only that but also to gain ownership in keeping our campus clean. CAHSEE- On October 2 nd and 3 rd Lynwood High will offer the CAHSEE to all seniors that have not passed. We will be offering the test several of times this year because we want to see everyone at the graduation ceremony. PSAT - On October 17 all sophomores will be required to take the PSAT. Principal To: From: Angela Del Real, Student Representative Date: September 25,2012 Re: Board Report Good Evening Board Members, Superintendent Mr. Velasquez, Deputy Superintendent Mr. Gothold, LUSD staff members, and the Lynwood Community, my name is Angela Del Real and I am a Senior at Vista High School and the Student Representative to the Board for the 2012-2013 school year. Back to school Night: Back to School Night was held last Tuesday, September 18, 2012 from 3:00 p.m.-6:00 p.m. We had a great turnout of families that came to visit our classrooms and teachers. During back to school night parents were informed of the future parent council meetings that will take place during the year. We also had the privilege of having our Board Member, Ms. Rachel Chavez, attend and visit our classrooms as well as the District Career and College Readiness Coordinator, Ms. Lorena Martinez. CAHSEE - CAHSEE testing will take place next Tuesday, October 2 nd and Wednesday, October 3[d, 2012. There are approximately 50 students that will take the exam. Students have been preparing for the exam the past 4 weeks. We know they will do a great job! School Site Council- The first School Site Council meeting for the 2012-2013 school year will take place Thursday, October 4, 2012, at 1:30 p.rn. Parents have been notified of the meeting through Tele-Parent and flyers. Parent elections will be held and the development and implementation of the School Plan will be discussed. ASH - Vista High School will conduct ASB elections this Friday, September 28, 2012, during lunch time. Students will have a rally/assembly on Thursday during lunch time where candidates will give a speech. Students will campaign the entire week. Saying Good-bye! Vista is very sad to say good-bye to our favorite principal, Ms. Ruby Charles and our English teacher, Dr. Diane Ross. Jones, Principal September 25, 2012 TO: FROM: SUBJECT: Ramon Martinez, ASB President Stndent Board Report Members of the Board of Education, Superintendent Velasquez, Lynwood Unified School District officials, fellow students, friends, and family members. Good evening. My name is Ramon Martinez, and I am the student body President from Lynwood Community Adult School. This school year promises to be an exciting one. So far, over 2300 students have registered in all the Adult School's programs. On Friday, September 28 th, the L VN program will host a reception for its graduates at 12:00 noon at Bateman Hall, and on October 4th at 6:00pm, the Lynwood Community Adult School's Vocational Nursing Program will honor its 19 graduates and welcome 23 new stndents. Graduates will receive pins and new stndents will receive caps. Capping signifies entrance into the nursing profession, and pins indicate successful completion of the nursing program. On Monday, September 24th, 25 t \ and 26 th, the GED examination will be given to 29 participants. The cost of the examination is $120 for students and $130 for non stndents. The next examination will be given on October 22, 23 and 24. Registration for the test begins on Monday, October 8, 2012. Currently, Lynwood Community Adult School stndents are preparing to take the California High School Exit Examination which will be administered on November 6 th and 7 th. To further assist student achievement, CAHSEE prep classes are available in the day (12:00 to 3:00pm Wednesday and Thursday for CAHSEE Math, 8:15am to 11:30am Friday for CAHSEE English Language Arts) and in the evening on Wednesday from 5 :OOpm to 8: 15pm.
