Term 2 Week 6 Kambora Public School Bulletin Respect Responsibility Personal Best 7 th June 2013 A word from the Principal This week was again eventful at Kambora PS. Our Stage 2 students scripted, edited, created and filmed short animations related to their Space concept, in the Claymation Digi-Ed incursion. Furthering their knowledge and experiences about Space, they visited the Sydney Observatory where the giant telescope was a highlight. This week saw the final sessions of the Bully No More program that was enjoyed by students in Years 1-6. Students were taught about self-defence and bystander bullying. Special thanks to Nick and Natasha Riley who ran this invaluable program for us. I have been advised that Ethics classes for students in Years 1 and 2 will be available from next term. If you would like your child to participate in the Ethics program as an alternative to SRE, please complete the attached form and return it to the office by next Friday. Parents must complete the form in order for their child to participate. Due to unforeseen circumstances, there will be no Ethics teacher for the remainder of the term for students in Years 5 and 6. Students will attend the nonscripture group in the library on Thursday morning. Please provide your child with some material to work on at this time. I have been advised that a permanent teacher will be available for the remainder of the year, commencing next term. Thank you to Year 3 parents for organising a terrific Movie Night last Friday. Everyone who attended had a great time. Special thanks to Mr Sinton who was able to assist with initial technical problems but soon had the show up and running. Attached to this bulletin is a message about cyber safety. As we continue to move towards a greater dependence on digital technology, as not only a means of learning but for social networking, new responsibilities become evident and online safety is paramount. I refer parents also to the article on Cyber Bullying on our school website. Next Tuesday, is our annual athletics carnival at Narrabeen (Sydney Academy of Sport). We are all hoping for fine weather!!!! Please note that students need to be at school by 9:00am when the bell will ring to go into classes where class roles will be taken. This earlier time is due to the early departure of the buses. Thank you to all the parents who have volunteered to assist us with the day s events. Enjoy a happy and restful long weekend. K-2 News The students have been practising this term for the K-2 Athletics Carnival next Tuesday 11 th June.. They are looking forward to running on the big track at Narrabeen Sports Academy. K-2 students will run races on the Athletics track in their Grade Groups before the 8yrs 100m races. After this K-2 students will then move to the middle of the field area to participate in K-2 sporting activities. Thank you to the parents who have offered their assistance at the carnival. 1/2M and IK participated in an interactive Video Conference last week. The Video Conference, called Treehouse, involved students learning about animals natural habitats. Each class magically received a birdhouse and had fun finding a suitable place to hang the birdhouse in the playground. All K-6 students participated in a well organised try tennis workshop on Wednesday. Please register your child on the Hot Shots website if you have not already done so, as the school can then receive a rebate to purchase tennis equipment. Your child will also receive a free t-shirt. Enter the postcode 2085 and select Kambora Public School, then follow the prompts. Jennifer Graham Assistant Principal K-2 Hot Shots Tennis at Kambora Have you registered? Enter the postcode 2085 and select Kambora Public School, then follow the prompts 3-6 News Premier s Debating Challenge This week, the first round of the Premier s Debating Challenge was held and Kambora PS debated against Forestville PS. Our 2 Year 6 teams were Daniel, Beno, Tom W and Tom M, and Claudia, Courtney, Emily and Molly. The topics were that bullies should be expelled from schools and self-defence classes should be taught in primary schools. Both teams performed brilliantly in their first debate and received some helpful feedback from the adjudicator. Next week we will venture over to Bilgola Plateau Public School for Round 2. Multicultural Perspectives Public Speaking Finals Sophie M and Tim D from Stage 2 and Annie E from Stage 3 will represent Kambora at the final of the Multicultural Perspectives Public Speaking 2013 Competition at Belrose Public School on Thursday 13 th June. Due to her very crowded schedule at the moment, Ella C from Stage 3 will participate in a final at Ryde Public School on Thursday 20 th June. Best of luck to these 4 students. Winter PSSA Sport Netball, Soccer and AFL started today at Melwood Oval and Lionel Watts Oval. Students need to arrive at 8.45am on Friday mornings, drop their school bag at their classroom and meet their coach with a hat, water bottle and any other necessary equipment (shin pads for soccer and a mouthguard for AFL). Hot Shots Tennis All K-6 students participated in a well organised try tennis workshop on Wednesday. Please register your child on the Hot Shots website if you have not already done so, as the school can then receive a rebate to purchase tennis equipment. Your child will also receive a free t-shirt. Enter the postcode 2085 and select Kambora Public School, then follow the prompts. Samantha Bateson Assistant Principal 3-6

SRC News - Handballs $3.00 each The Kambora SRC has chosen to support Stewart House this term. Stewart House is an organisation that provides opportunities for students from disadvantaged backgrounds. We will be selling "High Bounce" handballs at a cost of $3.00 each. They will be on sale in the K-2 and 3-6 playgrounds each lunch time next week. Students can also send money in an envelope to their class teacher. Don t miss out! Special Education in Ethics The Stage 1 Ethics program has now been approved for use in NSW schools. If your child currently attends nonscripture and you would like them to attend Ethics classes on Thursday mornings, please complete the attached expression of interest. Please note that as yet there is no teacher for this class. VOLUNTEER TEACHER NEEDED Are you interested in training as a volunteer Ethics Teacher? We are hoping that parents within the Kambora PS Community will train to become Ethics teachers. Ethics Teachers facilitate discussion using training and material provided by Primary Ethics. Ethics Teachers are given full training and support from Primary Ethics. Teaching and its required preparation would take approximately 2 hours per week. Applications to volunteer are welcome from members of the school and wider community. To find out more about becoming an ethics teacher and to apply online, please visit: http://www.primaryethics.com.au. You can also contact our school s Ethics Coordinator, Samantha Jones, for more information: samjones2085@gmail.com or 0414 627 687. Book Club Scholastic Book Club Issue 4 Book Club pamphlets will be handed to individual class teachers for distribution to the students next week (Week 7). All orders are due to the school office by Tuesday June 18 th. Orders should be back in time for the school holidays. There will be no Scholastic Book Club during Term 3 as we have our big Scholastic Book Fair scheduled for Monday 29 th July to coincide with Kambora's Education Week Open Day celebrations. This Book Fair is an opportunity for students and their families to purchase books and other items for themselves. The Kambora Library benefits from sales made on the day of the Book Fair by accruing a percentage of the profits made. More information about the Scholastic Book Fair will be published closer to the date. Virginia Allman Book Club Coordinator
