MAHWAH HIGH SCHOOL 50 Ridge Road, Mahwah, NJ 07430 John P. Pascale Linda A. Bohny Dominick J. Gliatta Principal Assistant Principal Direct of Guidance Dear Parents & Students in the Class of 2021, New infmation has been released from the New Jersey Department of Education clarifying graduation requirements and PARCC assessments, which will directly affect the students in the Class of 2021, our current eighth-grade students. Students in the Class of 2021 must pass the PARCC ELA Grade 10 exam, as well as the PARCC Algebra I exam, in der to demonstrate proficiency f high school graduation in the areas of English language arts and mathematics. Keep in mind there are students from Mahwah High School who take Algebra I in grade 8. If a student does not meet a passing sce on the PARCC ELA Grade 10 exam and the PARCC Algebra I exam respectively, he/she will be allowed to participate in the NJDOE Ptfolio Appeals to meet graduation requirements under certain conditions. In der to qualify f the NJDOE Ptfolio Appeal f language arts, the student must have taken the Grade 9 PARCC ELA, Grade 10 PARCC ELA, and Grade 11 PARCC ELA exams. In der to qualify f the Ptfolio Appeal f mathematics, a student must have taken the PARCC Algebra I, PARCC Geometry, and PARCC Algebra II exams. If a student does not sit f all of the afementioned exams, he she will not be eligible f the NJDOE Ptfolio Appeal. I have attached the infmation provided from the NJDOE f your review. Please see pages 1 and 5. These changes are not those of the Mahwah Township Public Schools, but those of the New Jersey Department of Education. Be aware that if an eighth-grade student in the Class of 2021 does not participate in the Algebra I PARCC exam, he/she runs the risk of not fulfilling the state mandated assessment requirements necessary f high school graduation. State regulations (New Jersey Administrative Code 6A:8-5.1 effective on September 6, 2016) require all students to participate in PARCC assessments f both English language arts and mathematics in May of 2017. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to email me at dgliatta@mahwah.k12.nj.us call me at (201) 762-2312. You may also visit the New Jersey Department of Education f additional infmation http://www.state.nj.us/education/assessment/parents/gradreq.pdf. High School Graduation Assessment Requirements Updated May 2018 On August 3, 2016, the State Board of Education approved updated state regulations f the high school graduation assessment requirements in both English language arts (ELA) and mathematics f the Classes of 2016 through 2021 and beyond. These new state regulations (N.J.A.C. 6A:8-5.1) became effective on September 6, 2016 and are detailed below. The Classes of 2018 and 2019 Students graduating as members of the Classes of 2018 and 2019 can meet graduation assessment requirements through any of these three pathways: (1) Achieve passing sces on high school level PARCC assessments; (2) Achieve sces defined in the table below on alternative assessments such as the SAT, ACT, Accuplacer; (3) The submission by the district of a student ptfolio through the New Jersey Department of Education s (NJDOE) ptfolio appeals process. (Special Education students, whose Individualized Education Plans (IEPs) specify an alternative way to demonstrate proficiencies, will continue to follow the graduation requirements set fth in their IEPs.) The Class of 2020 Students in the Class of 2020 can demonstrate graduation assessment proficiency through: (1) Pass the PARCC Algebra I and English language arts/literacy (ELA) grade 10 assessments The following pathways are available to students after they have taken all applicable PARCC assessments f each of the courses in which they are enrolled: (2) Achieve sces defined in the table below on alternative assessments such as the SAT, ACT, Accuplacer, PARCC ELA 9, ELA 11, Geometry, Algebra II; (3) The submission by the district of a student ptfolio through the NJDOE s ptfolio appeals process. The Class of 2021 and Beyond Starting with the Class of 2021, students will only have two pathways to meet the high school graduation assessments requirements: (1) Pass the PARCC Algebra 1 and English language arts/literacy (ELA) grade 10 assessments; (2) The submission by the district of a student ptfolio through the NJDOE s ptfolio appeals process, assuming the student has taken all PARCC assessments associated with the high school level courses f which they were eligible* and received valid sces. Each school year the NJDOE will determine the proficiency level needed on the assessments to meet the requirements. It is imptant to note that our students have always been able to meet graduation requirements through an alternative assessment pathway to graduation throughout New Jersey s fty-year histy with a statewide assessment program, and will continue to be able to do so. In this document, you will find charts containing the list of assessment requirements in both ELA and mathematics f the high school graduation Classes of 2018 through 2021.
