Page 3 The Twenty-first Century Scholars Program began in 1990 as Indiana's way of raising the educational aspirations of low- and moderate-income families. The program aims to ensure that all Indiana families can afford a college education for their children. Income-eligible 8th graders who enroll in the program and fulfill a pledge of good citizenship to the state are guaranteed the cost of up to four years of undergraduate tuition (unless funds depleted or if the parents income changes by graduation date) at any participating public college or university in Indiana. If the student attends a private institution, the state will award an amount comparable to that of a public institution. If the student attends a participating proprietary school, the state will award a tuition scholarship equal to that of Ivy Tech Community College. We are currently waiting for forms from the 21 st Century Scholars at the school, but on-line applications are available and encouraged. The on-line site is: https://studentaid.ssaci.in.gov/scholarenrollment/enrollment/ui/generalquery.aspx Please contact Mr. Venderley (446-0240, ext. 7302) in the Guidance office with more questions. All 8th grade students will hear more about the program and receive applications once the forms are received from the state. Page 5 From the desk of Principal Newman October 12, 2018 Dear Parents, Wow! How did we get to October already?? It is hard to believe that we are at the end of the first nine weeks for the 2018-19 School Year. Time certainly does go quickly when you are busy working in class learning every period. Plus we have students getting involved with after school activities, athletics, clubs, tutoring, and other special events. Students are now into a routine and are settling into the junior high experience here at Paul Harding Junior High School. Students know where their classes are and most of the students probably know the fastest way to get from one class to the next without being tardy. The first nine weeks is approximately the time period that it takes students to learn what is expected in class from each one of their eight to nine teachers which they see daily. Our students are prepared to RISE UP this year and are working to improve their NWEA scores from the Beginning of the Year to the Middle of the Year and finally to the End of the Year. Students will be tested three times over the course of the school year to see just how much they are learning in their Math and Language Arts classes. Please encourage your child to read every night and work on their ipads using Moby Max for all core subject areas. Our students are also in the middle of the second Academic Challenge for the school year. In order for the students to attend the Academic Incentive, the student must make 6 out of 8 challenges and all grades must be passing. Congratulations to those students who were able to attend the September Academic Challenge. The October Challenge is scheduled to end on Friday, Oct. 26 and the Incentive will be on Thursday, Nov. 1 during the lunch time. Parents, if you have not gotten access to the RDS system to check your child s grades regularly, I would encourage you to do this now. Please contact the front office and ask for Mrs. McBride or Mrs. Roddy to help you in setting this up to help you know how your child is doing at school. Parent-Teacher-Student Conferences is another great opportunity for you to meet your child s teachers and see what you can do to support your child at home. P/T/S Conferences will be held on Thursday, October 25, from 4:15 7:15pm in the GYM at PHJH! I hope to see you all here at PHJH for Parent Teacher Conferences. Have a great Fall Break (October 15 th )! If there is anything that we can do to help make your child s experience at PHJH better, please let us know. We are here to help your child learn and grow every day! RISE UP! EVERY STUDENT EVERY DAY! Sincerely, Mrs. Newman
