AMERICAN FEDERATION OF TEACHERS LOCAL 1700 Papers, 1962-1977 (Predominantly, 1967-1975) 3.5 linear feet Accession Number 1072 L. C. Number MS The papers of the American Federation of Teachers Local 1700 were placed in the Archives of Labor and Urban Affairs in January of 1982 and opened for research in October of 1993. The Chicago Federation of Teachers was formed in 1897, with Catherine Goggin as its president and Margaret Haley as its driving force. On 15 April 1916, the American Federation of Teachers was formed in Willmette, IL. Charles Stillman was the AFT's first president, and Margaret Haley its national organizer. The Archdiocesan Teachers Federation (ATF)--Local 1700, the American Federation of Teachers(AFT)--was and organization made up of grade and high school teachers employed at the schools of the Archdiocese of Chicago. The ATF included both lay and religious teachers. The main office was located at 21 West Superior, Chicago, IL. Important names in the Federation's history are James Keane, President, and Robert Keeley, Executive Secretary. The files consist of correspondence, memos, reports, lists, and other printed material relating to thedefunct Local 1700.
