Subject-based Banding (SBB) Every child is unique, and has different aptitudes, capabilities and talents. We believe in providing a balanced education. Subject-based Banding (SBB) has been introduced to ensure that your child s interests and strengths are taken into consideration and aims to help every child realize his potential.
Subject Choices Available If your Child (for P4 exam) Passes all 4 subjects and performs very well in Mother Tongue Language Passes all 4 subjects Passes 3 subjects Passes 2 subjects or less Your child may be recommended to take: 4 standard subjects + Higher Mother Tongue Language 4 standard subjects 4 standard subjects 4 standard subjects; or 3 standard subjects + 1 other foundation subject; or 2 standard subjects + 2 other foundation subjects; or 1 standard subject + 3 other foundation subjects; or 4 foundation subjects
How does Subject-Based Banding Work? At P4 Student sits for school-based examinations Based on student s results, school recommends a subject combination. Parents fill up an option form indicating the preferred combination. At P5 Student takes subject combination chosen by parents English, Math, Science and Mother Tongue are available at standard and foundation levels. Higher Mother Tongue is also available.
How does Subject-Based Banding Work? End P5 Student who takes 1 or more foundation subject(s) and does very well in the subjects Student who takes 4 standard subjects and has difficulties coping All other students School may allow him to take 1 or 2 subjects at standard level if school believes he can cope; or continue the same subject combination in P6 School may allow him to take 1 or 2 more subjects at foundation level in P6 School will allow them to continue the same subject combination in P6
How does Subject-Based Banding Work? At P6 Student takes subject combination decided by school. End P6 Student sits for Primary School Leaving Examination (PSLE).

By the End of P6 The preparation of a child to do well is a progressive and ongoing process. By the end of P6, students are to be well-prepared to excel in the PSLE, entering a secondary school of choice. A Child Of Good Character and possesses a Positive Attitude towards life and their future.

Direct School Admission (DSA) Allows students to demonstrate a wider range of talents in seeking admission to secondary schools. Type of Schools Schools with IP or SIS (NUSHS, SST & SOTA) Independent Schools (without IP) Autonomous Schools (without IP) Discretionary Admission Up to 100% (IP schools admitted up to 35%) 20% 10% Niche Programme School 5%
Direct School Admission (DSA) Based on students talents and achievements. Consider both academic and non-academic areas. Each secondary school has its own criteria for selection. Based on the qualities, such as talent in science, music or sports, that the school would like to emphasize. To assess these qualities in applicants, schools may conduct tests, interviews or trials as necessary.

Direct School Admission (DSA) Some schools of choice for DSA include: River Valley High School Nan Hua High School Hwa Chong Institution Nanyang Girls High School Crescent Girls School NUSHS, SOTA, SST, SSS Students seeking DSA will have to submit applications to individual schools. Students must achieve PSLE results that would enable them to be eligible for admission to the course offered by school.
General Ability Test (GAT) GAT is a standardized assessment of an applicant's general reasoning ability, conducted by Principals Academy Inc (PAI). It measures learning capacity, observational skills and problem solving ability. More information can be found on the GAT website: www.gat.sg
Direct School Admission River Valley High School Supporting Evidences: Application Form GAT results Certified copies of P5 Year-End and P6 Mid-Year Examination result slips Certified copies of other supporting documents such as CCA records, certificates, letters to support evidence of special talents, if any Short-listed applicants will have to attend school-based selection test, audition or sports trails and an interview.

Selection criteria: Academic and Cognitive Ability (Track record and outcomes of selection test) Aptitude for Applied Learning (Participate in selection activity and be assessed in terms of their ability to work in teams to solve a problem.) Interests and Motivation (CCA involvement, student portfolio, teacher s recommendation and personal statement.)
Direct School Admission School of The Arts Singapore Admission through DSA only. Selection criteria: Dance Music (performing and creating/composition) Theatre Visual Arts Selection process includes live auditions, interviews, portfolio reviews and writing exercise.
