All Souls School Newsletter Christ is our Light w/e 5 th February 2016 Season of Lent Lent is a time of preparation for the most important day in the church s year, Easter Sunday. It is a season of penance and renewal and a time of prayer, fasting and almsgiving. In school, the season of Lent is a time for us to really reflect and focus on our relationship with Our Lord and our journeys of faith, both individually and as a school and parish community. It is especially important this year The Year of Mercy as Pope Francis has asked that we live Lent more intensely and be prayerful listening to the Word of God. Please support your child s faith journey and enrich your own by attending Sunday Mass, joining and supporting in the various liturgies, acts of prayer that we celebrate together and also by simply praying with your child at home. It is a time that is rich in symbolism and we hope that over the Lenten weeks, children will grow to understand and appreciate this more fully and share this with you. The season of Lent begins on 10 th Feb which is Ash Wednesday. We will celebrate Mass together and all receive the blessed ashes, in the shape of a cross, on our foreheads. Simply, wearing our faith on our foreheads! Sports Results & Fixtures Football: The football team continued with their winning streak this week, winning 10-1 against St Osburgs. Good luck to the 4-a-side team in the tournament at Ryton 3.30pm Tuesday 9 th Feb Basketball Team: Earlier in the week the team won both tournament games. The first against Good Shepherd ended up as a tie at full time meaning the game went to overtime and a golden basket. The second game, against Moseley, was won by a 4 point lead! Ash Wednesday Mass Next week Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of Lent. Please do your very best to join us in the celebration of Mass at 9.15am Y6 Parents Parents who wish their child to receive the Sacrament of Confirmation and were unable to attend the meeting in January, must see Fr Michael before the first Commitment Mass which on Sunday 14 th Feb. He suggests you make an appointment or see him after next Sunday s Mass. Y3 Sacramental Meeting The next Sacramental Meeting for Y3 children and their parents is 6pm Monday 8 th February in the Parish Room. Teacher Training Day SCHOOL CLOSED Friday 12 th February is a teacher training day at All Souls. Therefore the school is closed. The following week is the half term holiday. The school reopens 8.45am Monday 22 nd February. Y5 Class Assembly Parents, family and friends are invited to the Y5 Class Assembly 9.15am Thurs 11th Feb. Mid Year Report Card Earlier this academic year, we issued a questionnaire to parents for feedback regards different aspects of school life. We analysed returns, responded accordingly and are putting actions into place to address some of the suggestions or concerns parents raised. (This document can be found on the school website). 26% of parents who responded felt we didn t communicate effectively on attainment and progress. To address this we have written a Mid Year Report Card for each child and these will be sent home to parents on Monday 8 th Feb. They are a brief update and if you have any queries, you can discuss these on the Parent Consultation Evening 1 st / 2 nd March or if concerned please make an appointment to meet your child s teacher sooner.

Sponsored Mud Run It seems lots of you are joining in the Mud Run on Thursday 11 th Feb (last day of the half term). Fantastic! Letters and sponsor forms have already been sent home or are available on the school website. Early Years Information Evening A letter has been sent home to parents, notifying them of an informal evening being held on Wednesday 8 th February at 5.30pm. This event will be a chance to discuss with staff and other parents, receive advice and support on topics such as your child s behaviour, eating, sleeping etc. A great opportunity, so come along! PTA Our Mother s Day Gifts Ordering Day will now take place on Friday 26th February as we have not yet been able to source as many suitable gifts as we would have liked. We want to ensure that the children have a variety of appropriate gifts to choose from and as yet our various suppliers are still focusing on Valentine's Day! Gifts will still be distributed on Friday 4th March. Our next Cinema Night also takes place next Friday 26th February for children in Y2 - Y6. The film being shown is 'Inside Out' which is rated U by the British Board of Film Classification. Letters will go out next week and slips should be returned by Thursday 25th February at the latest so that we know how many children to cater for. Thank you. Attached to this newsletter are the order forms for cinema night and Mother s Day gifts. More updates will follow in our Spring Newsletter next week Night Shelters A massive thank you to all those children and parents who have made donations of tea, coffee, soup, biscuits etc to the Churches of Coventry night shelters for the homeless. You really have been so generous and the volunteers have asked to pass on their thanks too, it is really appreciated. Please keep it coming. Coventry Cathedral Choirs Mr Beaumont, Musical Director at Coventry Cathedral, visited school earlier this week to invite the Y3 6 children to audition for the Cathedral Choirs. The auditions will take place in school next Monday 8 th Feb when the children simply have to sing Happy Birthday to Mr Beaumont. Please have a chat with your child as to whether they would like to audition. Good Shepherd Appeal During Lent each year, the Father Hudson charity delivers Good Shepherd Appeal boxes for children to take home and save the money they would normally spend on sweets and treats. These boxes will be sent home with the children today and we d be very grateful if you could fill them with loose change to help support the charity.
