Come celebrate Black History Month with your friends at our Coffee and Conversations event on February 19 th at 7 pm in the cafeteria. We will have instrumental and vocal performances as well as dancing and poetry readings all performed by your fellow WMHS students. Celebrating Black History Month..William Thomas "Billy" Strayhorn (November 29, 1915 May 31, 1967) was an American jazz composer, pianist, lyricist, and arranger, best known for his successful collaboration with bandleader and composer Duke Ellington, lasting nearly three decades.
His compositions include "Take the 'A' Train", and "Chelsea Bridge". Our own Mr. Maurice Johnson is singing pieces by Billy Strayhorn as part of the Strayhorn festival this week and promoting the festival on WPFW Radio Live at 5 today. He will also be playing at the Francis A. Gregory Neighborhood Library, 3660 Alabama Avenue SE DC, Sunday February 15, At 2PM
Attention all staff and students 16 and older: The American Red Cross Blood Drive will take place at Watkins Mill HS on Thursday, February 19. You must currently be 16 years old or older. If you are interested in donating, please see Ms. Squier in b102 to make an appointment. Appointments are on a first come, first serve basis. If you do not make an appointment, you will not be allowed to donate on the day of the blood drive.
The Honor Roll Ice Cream Party will be held today February 10th for 9th and 10th graders and February 12th for 11th and 12th graders.

Valentine s Day is right around the corner- want to do something special for your bae? SADD will be selling singing telegrams, flowers, and other items to be delivered Friday to your special someone. We will be pre-selling in the mixing bowl at STEP until Thursday. Come see us to surprise your Oh Baby and help raise money for abused women and their children all at the same time.

Please remember Cap and Gown payments are due to Mrs. Leecost by Friday, February 20th. It's $50. On Monday, February 23rd your cap and gown fee will become an obligation. Please review the packet that you received in October or come by C208 during STEP to get a packet from Ms. Leecost. Please check edline for any questions and update your edline email so that you can receive senior emails.
Senior tee shirt and sweatshirt orders are being taken in the mixing bowl during STEP every day until February 18th. You must pay in full before your shirt is ordered. Now for some career center news.
Seniors don t forget There will be a college fair on February 18 at Einstein HS from 6 to 8 pm featuring over 60 historically black colleges. This fair is for all high school students and parents. For seniors, there will be on the spot admissions beginning at 4:30 pm. Seniors can interview with a maximum of 3 schools. To select the schools, seniors need to log into Family Connection and complete the survey on the About Me tab.
The survey is only open from January 30 to February 13. Students will need to complete the applications for those schools and print out copies of their test scores to take with them to the fair. No recommendations are needed and application fees are waived. See your counselor or Mrs. Prochnow for more info.
Attention sophomores, the ACES application deadline is drawing near. Students who are interested can see their counselor or the ACES coach.
Consider applying for Girls State and Boys State, 2 free weeklong summer programs on a college campus for students interested in government and leadership. These are fabulous programs and look great on college applications. They are especially recommended for students interested in applying to any of the service academies. Interested students should stop by the College/Career Center to pick up an application. Return completed applications to Mrs. Prochnow no later than February 27.
Attention seniors interested in joining the military after graduation: the ASVAB, the Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery, will be given at WM on Friday, 2/27, at 7:30 am in the College/Career Center. This is the military s entrance exam. Students need a signed permission slip. Download a form on the College/Career Center page, get it signed by your parent/guardian and return it to Mrs. Prochnow.
Attention seniors: New scholarships have just been added to the Local and National Scholarship list on the College/Career Center webpage. Many of these scholarships have February and March deadlines. Check out the blue scholarship bin in the College/Career Center weekly to pick up new paper scholarship applications that have arrived. Be sure that each application you submit is complete and that you adhere to all deadlines. And now for some wolverine sports!
Don t forget to come out and support Our Varsity basketball teams as they take on Gaithersburg HS here at the Mill. Girls Varsity Basketball stats at 5:15 PM and at 7PM the Boys Varsity take the court. See you there!!!
Attention anyone interested in playing girls lacrosse: this spring, there will be a mandatory meeting during STEP on Wednesday, February 11 in E004. Important papers will be handed out and information about tryouts and schedules will be discussed. If you have any questions, please see Coach Naylor.
