The month of January is already here, and in a few weeks we will have completed our first semester of the 2016-2017 school year. In December, our students completed the I-Ready benchmark assessment in reading and math. Our data is showing some growth, but we still have some areas that we are focusing on in order to reach our school improvement goals. This year we have been targeting our professional development on strategies to support our English Language Learners and Special Education students, which we hope will result in narrowing our achievement gap. resources based on their individual needs. For example, Northwood is looking at ways to support students who need homework help, but are unable to stay after school due to transportation needs. This year, we offered tutoring at Soos Creek Elementary once a week, giving students who live in this area a place near their home and access to certified teachers and classified staff. We also offered more elective options for our 8 th graders, giving more access to leadership classes, STEM classes and the arts. Our committee will continue to meet regularly to look at other opportunities to increase equity and access to all students here at Northwood Middle School. Our district also has a strategic goal to recruit, hire, develop, and retain a diverse and premier workforce. This year, there has been a commitment by our Kent School District Human Resource department to start the hiring process earlier. In order to make this happen, secondary schools will begin registering students in early February and allocations for staffing will be made in March. On February 3 rd and 10th, Kentridge counselors will be at Northwood registering students for High School, and Northwood counselors will begin meeting with our incoming 6 th graders in late February. Please see information regarding upcoming high school registration and Kentridge Parent Night in our counselor s section of this newsletter, as well as an introduction to our new counselor, Brenda Bottorff. Reminder, our first semester ends January 30 th. As part of Dr. Watt s Strategic Plan, each school has been charged with forming an equity committee to look at current policies and practices within our schools to ensure all students have equal access to quality staff, courses, activities, services and

NORTHWOOD MIDDLE SCHOOL Counseling Corner Welcome Brenda Bottorff!! We are excited to welcome Brenda to the Northwood counseling team. Quarter two and semester one end on January 30th, which means we are half way through the school year. In the last few weeks of the semester please help encourage your student to finish the semester strong by completing all assignments. After the semester ends students will no longer have a chance to receive credit for first semester work.
