What is House Bill 5? TX government passed a change in graduation plans through House Bill 5 starting with Class of 2018 Focus on college and career readiness Requires student to select a course of study called an endorsement and let districts set up specific pathways of courses within each endorsement Also changed testing to End of Course (EOC) Exam requirements: English 1, English 2, Algebra 1, Biology, and US History
College Admissions Repercussions Colleges DO NOT care which endorsement a student graduates with, just that they HAVE ONE It is advisable that students take relevant classes towards their college major, but is not a requirement for admissions. There is no endorsement that is better, higher, or more college preparatory. The level of classes a student takes will determine how rigorous a transcript appears to a college during the admissions process, not their endorsement. To allow for the most opportunities after high school, our recommendations are: English 4 for the final English credit Chemistry AND Physics Math every year in high school, even if taking Algebra 1 in 8 th grade FOUR Social Studies credits following the standard sequence (W Geo, W Hist, US History, Govt/Econ) ALWAYS check the admissions requirements for each college to plan accordingly
