A.S.P.I.R.E 2 Higher Education ACT Supplemental Preparation in Rural Education Do you want help gaining admissions to college? Are you intimidated by college entrance examinations such as ACT? If you answered YES to any of these questions then the A.S.P.I.R.E. Program is perfect for you! As a high school student, preparing for a college entrance examination like ACT can be pretty difficult! Fortunately, your local 4-H Agent is now offering a course to prepare you for ACT College Entrance Examination through the A.S.P.I.R.E. (ACT Supplemental Preparation In Rural Education) Program. By participating in an A.S.P.I.R.E. ACT Class, you will learn the latest tactics and strategies to improve your ACT score and increase your chances of getting into college! An A.S.P.I.R.E. ACT class will be offered in your community at the Cooperative Extension Office, 180 S. Main St., Mocksville. The classes will start on September 17 th and end November 21 st. This class will be offered for 10 weeks. We will be meeting from 3:45PM to 5:15PM on Tuesdays and Thursdays. This will prepare you for the ACT examination administered on December 14 th. If you are interested in this program and would like to receive an application, please call the Extension Office. Davie County 4-H Senior Scholarship Davie 4-H is offering financial support to outstanding Davie County 4- Hers who plan to further their education by attending a university, technical or other higher education institution. Applications are available at the Extension Office or on our website: davie.ces.ncsu.edu. Please call 753-6100 for additional information. Applications are due June 28 th. Special accommodations will be made for the physically disabled, vision or hearing impaired person upon request. If special accommodations are required, please call 336.753.6100 at least two weeks prior to the event or activity. All Davie 4-H events operate under the 4-H Code of Conduct and Disciplinary Procedure. You can obtain a copy from your local 4-H Agent or Extension Staff. This 4-H Code of Conduct and Disciplinary Procedure is a condition of participation in any North Carolina 4-H activity or program.

Congratulations to Project Record District Award Winners: Claire Walker won the bronze award for her Communication Arts project record, ages 13-15. Emma Schambach won the silver award for her Communication Arts project record, ages 13-15. MaeLena Apperson won the gold award for her Animal Science project record, ages 16-18. District Activity Day Presenters: Hannah Phillips won the silver award for her presentation on the Four Forces of Flight. Emma Schambach won the gold award for her presentation on All in Good Taste. Ben Phillips won the gold award for his presentation on Aviation and Radio Communications. Davie County Horse Judging Team: The Davie County 4-H Horse Judging Team attended the 2013 North Carolina State Horse Judging Competition at St. Andrews University in Laurinburg, NC on April 13. There were three seniors who competed, Claire Walker, Elizabeth Bourne, and MaeLena Apperson; as well as one junior, Sarah Doub. Miss. Doub, in her first year of competing, placed 10 th overall as an individual! As a team, we advanced our knowledge of evaluating performance, conformation, and horsemanship and look forward to next year. Congratulations to the Davie 4-H horse judging team. Special thanks to Davie County Farm Bureau for supporting our team. Yadkin/Davie Livestock Show The annual Yadkin/Davie Livestock Show will be held August 3 rd at the Lone Hickory Arena in Yadkin County. This show is open to 4-H & FFA youth ages 5-18 (ages 9-18 for competition, 5-8 for participation) in the following counties: Alexander, Alleghany, Ashe, Davie, Forsyth, Stokes, Surry, Wilkes and Yadkin. Ages are as of January 1, 2013. Animals may arrive and check-in from 9:00 11:00am. Opening Ceremonies and show will begin at 12:00 pm. Any youth wanting to show must complete a project record book. For more information on the show or to obtain a show packet and project record forms, please call the Extension Office at 753-6100. Entries are due July 19th.

Spaces are still available in the following summer programs: Jr. Master Gardener Day Camp June 24-28 Cost: $75 There is still space for you to attend this week long camp. Activities include: fishing, arts and crafts, nature exploration, gardening, cooking, microscope fun and community service. Grades 3-5 welcome. Bugging Out! June 10 Cost: $5 What makes an insect, an insect? If you are interested in bugs, then this program is for you! We will learn bug body parts, how they eat, communicate, and see. We will also learn what color bugs are good and not so good. If weather permits, we will explore the outdoors for some really cool bugs. Grades 3 5. Money Manager June 25 Cost: $5 Money helps us buy things we need, like food and clothes. Money helps us buy things we want, like video games and movie tickets. Learn the differences between wants and needs and how to manage money wisely. Participants will learn how to shop while using a calculator to add items and stay within their budget. Grades 2-3. Savvy Shopper June 25 Cost: $5 Food and water, clean clothes, a place to live; these are things everyone needs. A closet full of shoes, a new desk, tickets to a movie; these are things people want. How do you figure out what you need and what you want? You might find it s not as easy as you think! Grades 4-5. Rifle Safety July 19 Cost: $8 Participants will learn to shoot targets with.22 rifles. Emphasis on safety and skill development. Kids will learn safety rules, fundamentals of shooting and will have a shooting competition. Grades 8 & up. Speak Out! July 23 Cost $5 They call it stage presence: the ability to be yourself and make a connection with people even a crow of people and seem comfortable the entire time. Come to this workshop to learn how to better your speaking skills. GPS/GIS Technology July 27 Cost: $10 Join us to have a chance in participating in hands-on geocaching activities. We will also explore Google Earth and other online mapping tools. Program will be held on the Davie Campus of Davidson Community College. Grades 5 & up. Zumba July 29 Cost $6 Join us as we learn to do the popular dance Zumba! We have plenty of space available! Social Butterfly August 1 Cost $10 Have you ever found yourself in a group or place where you didn t now how to act? Have fun practicing the social style and good manners that will make you comfortable in any situation. Shotgun Safety August 2 Cost $20 Participants will learn shotgun safety and fundamentals of shooting moving targets with a shotgun. Will include a competitive session shooting trap. August 6-8 Hunter Safety Cost: FREE Need you hunter s safety card? Interested in learning safe hunting practices? This class is for you. Classes will be held at the Davie County Law Enforcement Training Center. Participants must attend all three days and pass the written test to become certified. Participants will have a chance to practice shooting on the last day. Grades 5 & up.
