Queen Elizabeth II High School September 2016 Newsletter Special points of interest.. Welcome Senior Prize Giving Extra-curricular Activities Reminders School Association News and Events Important dates With the new School year, we not only welcome new students, but we also introduce several new members of staff. Mr Samson joins us from Cumbria as a new Assistant Head and Mr Winrow joins us as our new Head of PE. Miss Ashworth, Mr Lynch and Mr Perkins join the Science Department. Mr Davies, Miss Dunne, Miss Riley and Mr Watt join the PE Department, Mr Manson joins Maths and Miss Thompson joins Languages. As part of our collaboration with Ramsey Grammar School and Castle Rushen High School, we have appointed two teachers, Mrs Kelly and Mrs Miles to share the A Level Psychology teaching across the three schools. Welcome! We welcome all new members of the School community and hope that their time here will be happy and successful! For those of you who are new to the School, our newsletters are normally published in September, January, May and July. Both our School website and Facebook page are updated regularly with important information. Please ensure that you visit these sites, the details of which are below, as they may have important information which is relevant to your child. Thank you for completing the various data collection forms. Please remember to let us know if you change your address or contact details as it is vital that we have up to date information at all times. Senior Prize Giving On Monday 12 th September we held our Annual Senior Prize Giving to celebrate the success of students in Years 11 and 13. We were delighted to welcome our Guest of Honour for the evening, Mrs Clare Christian, retired Madam President of Tynwald, to present the prizes. Ms Moore thanked the sponsors, without whose generosity there would be no prizes and was proud to share that this year we are once again a significant strength for attainment and for achievement or progress. On every measure we are above the Isle of Man average. At GCSE, 51 students attained at least one A* or A grade and 17 managed over five. 83% of the year attained a grade C or above in their Maths, while nearly 80% attained C or above in English. Almost two thirds of the year attained five or more top grades including English and Maths. The pass rate overall was almost 100%. At A Level, nearly 43% of grades were A* - B, while the overall pass rate was 99%. We are sure that you will agree that this is comprehensive education at its best and we would like to wish all the students good luck in their future careers! Always strive to do your best

Enrichment Clubs Extra-curricular Activities Students have been issued with a list of 80 different opportunities to take part in, including sports, music and drama and a huge range of other clubs offered by staff at lunchtime and after school. The list is also available on the School website and on the notice board in the Entrance Hall. Every student can find at least one club or other activity to join! Duke of Edinburgh s Award 33 students have gained their Bronze Duke of Edinburgh s Award through School this year and most of them attended the annual awards ceremony at The Gaiety Theatre on Tuesday 20th September. A number of other QEII students gained their Bronze Award through other organisations and three were awarded Silver. Sixteen students are presently being assessed for Silver expeditions at the weekends. Once this is completed we will be launching the Bronze Award training for students in Years 9 and 10. The Duke of Edinburgh s Award scheme delivers a huge range of skills and experiences which students will never forget and are ideal for writing about on CVs and in UCAS Personal Statements. Get involved! Congratulations to our Bronze Award winners! Enrichment Week After the amazing success of Enrichment Week in 2016, planning is already underway for July 2017. As before, we will be trying to offer as wide a range of physical activities and arts and crafts as we possibly can. If there are any parents who have a specialism that they are willing to share, and either lead or help out on 19 th and 20 th July, we would be very keen to hear from you. Please get in touch with Mr Barker at the School if you can help.

Please remember You will find a lot of useful information on our School website. Please take time to visit us on the address below www2.sch.im/groups/qe2highschool/ www.facebook.com/qe2iom DROPPING OFF AND COLLECTING STUDENTS We urge parents dropping off or collecting children from School to do so before 8.30am in the morning or after 4.00pm in the afternoon. There are a number of parents driving in while the buses are there, or just before, and then trying to drive out which blocks the main road as well as putting children at risk. PLEASE ALSO OBSERVE THE LINES IN FRONT OF THE SCHOOL AND DO NOT PARK IN THE BUS LANE. Year 13 Important dates Those students aiming to study at Oxford or Cambridge or studying Medicine, Dentistry, Veterinary Science or Architecture need to see Miss Caley to organise the tests needed AS SOON AS POSSIBLE. Please note the following deadlines - Friday 30 th September is the deadline for the submission of their Personal Statements. Thursday 13 th October is the deadline for draft Personal Statements to be with tutors for all students intending to apply to UCAS this year. Thursday 20 th October is the deadline for completion of Personal Statements.

School Association News and Events A very big THANK YOU to all our loyal School Association supporters! The School Association plays a vital role in raising money for additional School resources and equipment. Through money raised at discos, jazz evenings, quizzes, Christmas Fayres, and so on, funds have been available to buy many additional items that wouldn t otherwise be possible. Our School Association has also registered the School with Easy Fundraising and Easy Search. Through Easy Fundraising our supporters have so far raised a magnificent 3,457.88 (as at 13/09/16) and you could help increase this further! Please visit www.easyfundraising.org.uk/causes/qe2hs where you will find a shopping directory listing some of your favourite online stores. Just use the links on the Easy Fundraising site whenever you shop online and, at no extra cost to you, the School will receive a donation of up to 15% from every purchase you make. It really is that simple! It is completely FREE to register and you won t pay a penny more for your shopping when you use the Easy Fundraising site. In fact you can even SAVE MONEY as many retailers offer discounts, special offers and even 'e-vouchers' exclusive to Easy Fundraising. If you shop online anyway, then why not raise valuable extra funds for our School by using this fantastic scheme! Easy Search - http://qe2hs.easysearch.org.uk/ is a search engine which allows you to raise funds for the School simply by surfing the web. By making just ten searches per day with Easy Search, instead of Google or any other search engine, you could generate over 20.00 per year for our School. Please use these sites and help raise funds for our School every penny counts!
