4 2 BISHOP GERARD HANNA FOREWORD In every school community, all are called to give their best in all aspects of school life. To do less than that does not do justice to the gifts that God has given to each one. St Paul wrote: Fan into flame the gift that God has given you and shine your light before all people. The task at hand for the Leadership and Staff of Xavier High School Albury is to establish the culture and environment to allow every student to flourish. This annual School Magazine for 2013 records how the values held at Xavier High School are reflected in the school s achievements and demonstrates the commitment to an education that encompasses academic, co-curricular and spiritual pursuits. The many highlights of the past year are well documented none of them happened by accident. The successes during the year are the result of the vision and excellence of the Principal and Staff and the response and spirit of the more than eight hundred students who are encouraged to shine their light. The school Leadership and Staff, local parishes, School Council, Parents and Friends Association and the students are all to be congratulated. All have made some contribution to advance Xavier High School in 2013 and preserve the foundation for facing the new challenges that 2014 will bring. Every blessing to all of you associated with the life of Xavier High School. Gerard Hanna Bishop Diocese of Wagga Wagga

5 3 PRINCIPAL S REFLECTION I would like to take this opportunity to thank the many people who have made this year a memorable one. In my first year as Principal I have been fortunate to meet many of you, and am very humbled by the way you have welcomed me, whether staff or student, parent or guardian. Xavier High School is first and foremost a vibrant Christian community. The Gospel values seen through the lens of the charisms of the Sisters of Mercy and Christian Brothers are borne out in every interaction, every smile, every time we act when we see injustice. Our community is therefore a witness to the life of Jesus. I see this witness, played out every day in the lives of our students and staff as they strive for their best not only in the classroom, but in how they relate and treat each other. As the leader of this school I am extremely grateful to be able to continue to assist in realising our mission of The Truth Will Set You Free. In right-relationship, truth will always bring freedom, life and love. At times being Principal takes me away from the face to face interactions with students in the classroom and, whilst in the second half of the year I was able to teach a class, it has been the Retreats and camps where I have meet the real Xavier spirit of our students. I have been continually struck by the integrity, the openness and the generosity of spirit that our students continually display. As parents and carers, you should be very proud of the sons and daughters you give us the privilege of working with. Thank you for your trust in us! Similarly the staff at Xavier are not only committed to serving the needs of students - spiritually, academically, physically and emotionally - they are continually in pursuit of the best from them and assisting each and every one to achieve his or her best. We are very blessed to have such instrumental people working in our school. Another highlight of the year for me was the opening of our new classrooms, study centre and hospitality facilities. The opening itself in August was a great occasion, with many of the people who had been involved in the project at a whole variety of levels coming together with our community to celebrate these wonderful buildings. The vision of our previous leaders has now been realised in the completion of these contemporary learning and teaching spaces. The students were reminded that they have before them, facilities that have not been seen elsewhere around the country, and I do believe that they are very grateful for that, as is the rest of our community. Our Assistant Principal Mr Peter Nicholls has accepted the position of Principal at St Clare s High School Taree commencing in Peter has been at Xavier for the past fifteen years. In that time he has been instrumental in the development of our current facilities and the shaping of our school s culture as it is today. I personally take this opportunity to thank Peter for his support over the past eleven months and on behalf of the school community I thank Peter for his immense contributions to the school which reflect his passion and commitment to Catholic education at Xavier High School. On behalf of the school community I wish to thank the Year 10 Magazine Committee for the exhaustive account of the 2013 school year. Under the leadership of the magazine s editor, Mrs Anne Cretan, over the past five years the magazine has become a document highly valued by students and the wider school community. Anne has decided not to continue as Editor in I take this opportunity to thank her for her tireless work in compiling the activities of our school year ensuring that we all have a magazine that relives many school memories for years to come. I thank you again, all of you, for your support this year, and for all the years you have been associated with this great school. As we pull the blinds down on another year, may we be blessed with the goodness and fortune that was bestowed on us and may they shine on us next year. Gavin Dykes Principal

6 4 ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL S REFLECTION The recent opening of our new inquiry base learning centre, The Hub, along with the study centre and industrial kitchen brought to a close the school s strategic building program first conceived in Fourteen years of designing and building means that our students and staff are able to work in spaces that allow collaborative, technically enhanced learning environments to develop and grow. It was a great pleasure to see past Principals Sister Angela Jordan and Neville Powles, along with former long term leaders within our community Peter Haysey, (long serving Curriculum Coordinator) and John Bracher (past Business Manager), join us to celebrate projects in which they played significant parts via their wise advice at School Council, commitment to creative curriculum and sound financial management. The need to continuously test and adjust teaching practice to meet the needs of students is a constant source of discussion among our staff. We recognise that teaching is a team sport and that learning should be a constant companion of all involved with the young people in our care. The new Hub building reflects a commitment to contemporary learning and teaching practice and recognises that a collaborative mindset produces best outcomes for those working in a team environment. Bishop Hanna s mandate charges us to ensure that the learning and personal growth of each person in our care is paramount in all that we do. The skills of critical thinking, team work and collaboration and the negation of group norms, which leads to an understanding of what constitutes the common good, all serve to help Xavier High School be a welcoming, compassionate and inclusive community dedicated to the development of thoughtful, spiritually aware and socially active Christian people. The Xavier Community has offered my family and me much over the past fifteen years. It has been a privilege to be part of the growth and development of a great school and a wonderful welcoming community. Our young people are our best advocates; their energy, generosity and social conscience do both them and their parents proud and makes working with them rewarding, and gives much hope for the future. So...a heartfelt thank you to parents, staff and students as I take my leave; you have taught me much and I am a better person for it! Have a safe, happy and holy Christmas. Peter Nicholls Assistant Principal

7 5 SCHOOL CAPTAINS REFLECTION Having seen a year go past it s really hard to believe that our term of being school captains is finally coming to a close. To think that this time last year we stood in front of the past Year 12 s and received the banner of the school, passed on from Harry and Tara. What a big set of shoes we had to fill. This year was a new beginning for many, for the Year 7 s the beginning of their high school lives, for the Year 12 the beginning of our HSC, and for our school as we were led by a new Principal Mr Gavin Dykes. Being new to the school Mr Dykes brought with him fresh insights for the learning environment and a pronounced duty of care to the Xavier community. With the support of the teaching staff, Mr Dykes has created an educational and nurturing atmosphere with the aim of developing us as individuals. With their help and our own perseverance and commitment we have been able to overcome obstacles during our journey and write our own story for The most evident change we have witnessed in the school is the opening of a new inquiry based area, The Hub, as well as the new study centre and Hospitality facilities. While the loud noise and the constant disruption from construction sites may have seemed that it was never going to end, the wait has been worthwhile. The new learning areas will change the structure of the classroom into a modern adaptable space to cater for the changing face of education. These rooms will form a part of Xavier s identity and will be passed on to generations of students to come. Over this year we have been able to look into the past as well as forward into the future. Having the chance to represent Xavier on ANZAC Day alongside a hundred and thirty fellow students gave us the chance to commemorate those who had fallen before us for the protection of our country. Seeing such a great turnout portrayed Xavier s qualities of gratitude and respect to the larger community in a way that we can all be proud of. This is not to say that we don t look to the future. As seniors we were granted the chance to work alongside the younger students as role models during the running of the Mighty Men and Gorgeous Girls programs. Here we taught about the acceptance of others, the loving of ourselves as well as the celebration of the individual attributes and qualities that we all bring to this school. It is through these programs that we are given an opportunity to strengthen the relationship between the younger and older students, which then strengthens us as a whole school family. During this year our SRC group has met on a regular basis to discuss upcoming events and school fundraising. We have been lucky enough to work with committed and proactive students who are enthusiastic in taking part in projects to improve and strengthen our school. This year we decided as a group to take on the role of working for the good of our school, having an internal focus of our funds. We thank all the members of the SRC. It turned into a great year of meetings. We are proud to proclaim that while it came down to a fine line between us and the teachers at the Year 12 soccer match, we snatched the victory from the teachers, in a down to the wire penalty shootout. We commend the teachers for their participation and the chance to show us they still have what it takes to put up a fight. When our goal scorers stole us the victory it was we who got the chance to go and receive the famed golden shoes. This game forms a valuable part of our Year 12 experience. Year 12, here we stand representing you for the last time. We thank you for this opportunity and wish you luck as we close the final chapter of our school life. These six years have been made up of memories that we will cherish forever and friendships we will always hold dear. To our families, thank you for your undying support through the tantrums, late nights, stressful periods, and an endless number of emotional breakdowns. We couldn t have done it without you. We can now say that we gave HSC our best shot, fought through it all and it s been a lot of fun. Thank you all. Big Brother and Mumma J, signing off. Nicholas Clayton and Jessica Mitsch School Captains

8 6 SCHOOL COUNCIL REPORT It is with great pleasure that I submit my second report as Chairman of the School Council. I would like to thank my fellow Council members for the contribution they have made over the past twelve months. It is encouraging to note that this year we had more applicants than positions available and have introduced two new members to Council. I would like to thank the unsuccessful candidates for their interest in the school community. As I noted last year, our children s happiness and education are a high priority and with three children remaining at the Xavier High School, the past 12 months have continued to provide insights into the day to day running of the school community. The ability of your elected Council members to have input into the school s policy making and future direction is indeed an honour. The past eighteen months have required us to deal with a range of issues that have been discussed at Council level. We have considered various things including, but not limited to, school capacity and enrolments, finalization of the current building programs, appropriate use of technology, school uniforms, teaching practices, school fees, class sizes, the parent-teacher interview process, and staff and student issues. With the addition of two new Council members we have an added ability to draw on a diverse range of occupations and relevant work and life experiences. The more experience and diversity we have, the more likely we are to consider issues from a broader range of perspectives. The past twelve months have indeed been exciting times for the school. We have appointed a new Principal, completed and officially opened three exciting new building facilities and explored what options are available to the school in relation to being in a world of rapidly changing technology. I believe that we have had tremendous success in relation to all three. We have continued to take advantage of strong foundations laid down by our predecessors. I would like to extend a welcome and special thanks to Gavin Dykes, who in his role as Principal, with the support of his executive and staff, has done a fantastic job. We all know and appreciate how hard it is to take on a demanding role, especially when new to the job. Gavin has done tremendous service to those responsible for engaging him. His friendly, caring nature and willingness to not only listen but learn has endeared him to the school community in the short time he has been Principal. The recent opening ceremony of the three new facilities certainly highlighted the wow factor reinforced by Senator Stephen s comments. The school is now faced with the situation where we have excess enrolment applications. This clearly shows that we have become a school of choice. On behalf of the School Council we wish the school students every success in their pursuit of educational excellence and in particular the Year 12 students currently studying for their HSC. We hope they achieve the results that will enable them to pursue their career choice. Best Wishes Jim Suidgeest Chairman

9 7 PARENTS & FRIENDS ASSOCIATION REPORT 2013 saw the P & F continue as an opportunity for parents to meet with the Principal, Assistant Principal and a teacher representative once a term to express our views, ask questions of the school s leadership team and hear of future plans. It has been a year of change within the school and the P&F committee. We welcomed a new Principal, Gavin Dykes, who has been enthusiastic and generous with his time. Sadly, we said goodbye to our long standing committee members: Deb Breen, Secretary, Chris Hill, Treasurer and Cathy Nyhan, Vice President and School Council Representative. Their association with the school will come to an end as the last of their children finish Year 12. Collectively, Deb, Chris and Cathy have devoted a few decades to serving the Xavier community and have been tireless with their efforts. Thank you so much ladies, you will be greatly missed. The P&F continued with their fundraising efforts so that money could be put towards much needed resources. After years in the planning, Xavier opened the beautiful study centre and collaborative class rooms. The P&F were able to donate funding towards some of the ergonomically designed furniture that should be there for many years for our children to use and enjoy. In September we had another successful trivia night. Many local businesses once again came on board with their support and allowed the night to not only be a significant fundraiser, but provided a great opportunity for the Xavier community to come together and have some fun. The P&F continued to support the School House BBQ s, the Swimming Carnival BBQ and the Pie Drive. I would like to welcome our new committee members: Chris Davison, Secretary, Kate Higgins, Treasurer and Sue McLaurin, Vice President. It has been pleasing to see an increased number of parents attend our meetings this year and I would like to take this opportunity to invite parents and friends of Xavier to our meetings, which are held on the third Tuesday at the start of each term. The P&F is a great forum for providing insight into our children s education and is a wonderful opportunity to meet parents and develop strong links with the school staff. Everyone is very welcome to come along. Trish Pearce President

11 AQUINAS HOUSE 9 In January Aquinas welcomed nineteen new Year 7 students. Although obviously a little nervous, they brought energy and excitement to the House. We began the 2013 school year under the new leadership regime with House Captains, Andrew Mackinlay and Georgina O Brien, and Vice Captains, Merryn Buckmaster and Patrick Baine. Aimee Riley and Lily Baker were elected in the capacity of junior SRC Representatives. In February Aquinas united in competition against our seven sister Houses to once again take out the annual swimming carnival. Although it was a close tussle for points with Loreto for most of the day, our team effort in the relays got us over the line in the final events. Sam Maroney and Alesha Harmer were Age Champions and Olivia Bahr and Merryn Buckmaster runners-up. February also saw many members of our House gather together for a social occasion at our House Mass and BBQ. It gave many of our new House members the chance to mingle and get to know their new school and teachers better. In March, we attempted to run our Athletics Carnival but unfortunately we were washed out before morning tea. In hindsight it may have worked much better for Aquinas if it did go ahead on a wet track, as we certainly seem to perform better in the presence of water. When eventually we did put our skills to the test at the Athletics Carnival, Aquinas were true to their alligator mascot, performing not so well on the land and finishing eighth out of eight Houses. In spite of this, a good time was had by all. Ava Masterson was named as a runner-up Age Champion in the 13 years girls. As a House we continued to support SIDS as our charity for In the lead up to Red Nose Day in June, the House leaders were responsible for the sale of Red Nose products and on Red Nose Day the House banded together to run a BBQ and cake stall. Many House members baked to ensure the success of our fundraiser and as a result Aquinas House provided to The Sudden Infant Death Foundation a cheque for $ Homerooms continue to be happy vibrant places that engage in tipping, trivia, conversation and occasional competition. They have, more recently, also enjoyed forming teams to compete against other Houses in the lunchtime AFL 9 s competition. I continue to be proud of our House and the manner in which students support each other and present themselves in the pursuit of their learning. The Homeroom Tutors continue to offer their students great support and thanks must go to Amy Martin and Ben Thomas in Aquinas 1, Peter Robinson and Dave Ryan in Aquinas 2, Genevieve O Reilly, Sharon Hill and more recently Helen Stewart-Hawkins in Aquinas 3 and Monica Claney and Michaela Williams in Aquinas 4. We finished runner-up in the House Cup in 2012 and eagerly await the 2013 results to see the fruits of our labour. Joanne Gleeson House Coordinator

15 CLARK HOUSE 2013 has flown by and we have had a terrific year in Clark House! With impressive attendance in both carnivals, Clark house has risen to the challenge and came 2nd and 5th for the Swimming and Athletics Carnival. We would like to applaud all Clark House students for their efforts and eagerness in House activities this year, and we continue to encourage your participation. Over the past couple of years Clark has continued to make huge efforts in fundraising and promoting awareness of our charity Beyond Blue and supporting the development of local Headspaces. Attending mental youth forums, some Clark students had the opportunity to further understand the impacts mental health has on a community. As Year 7 students, Liam and I remember walking through Xavier excited and a little nervous with what was to come. As we look back now, we are amazed by how much we and others around us have grown in confidence and have matured into young men and women. Clark has been an extension of us, being a part of our lives for a wonderful six years. It feels like only yesterday that we were elected House Captains and it now saddens us to conclude our final goodbyes and we would personally like to say thanks to our peers and teachers. Thank you for electing us and for giving us the opportunity to rise up to the challenge; it has been amazing working beside you and experiencing the role of leaders. A special thank you to the Clark Homeroom Tutors; Ms Gooding, Ms Gleeson, Mr Ardren, Mr Gleeson, Miss Schulz, Ms Hall, and also to our coordinator Mr Smith for your inspirational work within Clark House. You are all beautiful and wonderful people; the world is your oyster so take every opportunity you can get and push the boundaries, as you are all capable of doing amazing things. Good luck for the rest of your schooling life, HSC and future aspirations and remember you only get out what you put in, so make it count. As our time at Xavier and as your Clark leaders draws to an end, we would like to wish next year s Clark leaders the very best, and hope they can offer even more and better things to Clark s family community. Best Wishes Quirky and Richo Go Cougars! Emma Quirk and Liam Richardson - House Captains

19 DYNAN HOUSE As our final year at Xavier draws to a close, it is with mixed feelings that we write our final farewell to the Dynan House. Our journey as House Leaders has been incredibly fulfilling and enjoyable thanks to the enthusiasm, commitment and passion the Dynan Dynamites put into everything! This makes us extremely proud to be Dynan House Captains. Throughout the year, Dynan have held a number of successful fundraisers to raise money for the Ronald McDonald Family Room in Wodonga. Students from all year levels regularly volunteer their time to be involved in Community Service at the Family Room. The students have given their time willingly to set up for early morning events (7.00 am start) and have also volunteered at evening functions. During community service visits students have been involved in cleaning windows, making biscuits, weeding the garden, assembling information packs, entertaining young children and talking with the parents. The students work benefits the families staying in the Family Room as well as leaving a significant impact on each Dynan student who has the opportunity to visit and assist in any way possible. The students have worked in excess of five hundred voluntary hours at the Family Room over three years. This year the Dynan House will be added to the Ronald McDonald Tree of Life as the group has become significant and valued supporters of the Family Room. Dynan House will join other significant community groups on the Tree of Life which depicts loyal supporters from across our region. This year, Dynan House was nominated for the Red Carpet Youth Awards for our volunteer work at the Family Room. The House-wide contribution to this charity should be commended. The 2013 House Cup began with the Swimming Carnival. Dynan students should be congratulated on their efforts. Jaime Gould was the Senior Girls Age Champion on the day. We continued our efforts and increased our participation at the Athletic s Carnival. Overall, we placed third on the day. This was a magnificent effort from everyone! Claire Mahoney and Brooke Bice were Age Champions. A number of students have continued their sporting achievements outside school events. Taylor Roberson (Year 11) has received a number of awards for umpiring soccer in our local community. Adam Weston (Year 12) has continued to impress in both school and local soccer competitions, while Ben Baker (Year 10) has also represented the Hume League in Football. Claire Mahoney (Year 7) has been selected Vice Captain of the State All Schools Soccer Team. We would like to congratulate and thank all Dynamites for their eagerness, interest and commitment to the Dynan House. This has allowed us to strengthen the Dynan community and continue to support the Ronald McDonald Family Room. We would also like to thank Olivia and Dominique Beer for their continued assistance and support as SRC Leaders. As leaders, your efforts and help make our jobs a lot easier! Thanks also to Bronwyn Lieschke for the great support, enthusiasm and encouragement she puts into everything. We congratulate her on the birth of her first child, and wish her luck and joy in motherhood. We would also like to congratulate Nichole Smith (Dynan 1 Homeroom Tutor) on the birth of her daughter, Audrey May, in June. As House Leaders, we have enjoyed every moment of leading the wonderful Dynan Dynamites. Thank you all for your support throughout the year. We would like to wish our fellow Dynamites and the Homeroom Tutors all the best in the future. We hope you achieve all you set out to. 23 21 JOSEPH HOUSE FROM THE HOUSE CAPTAIN... I have mixed emotions writing my farewell to Joseph House members and their families. I would like to thank our courageous leader Marg Beecher, and my fellow House Captain Shane Elwood, who left to take up an apprenticeship at the end of Term 2. I have been honoured to lead Joseph House through our achievements this year. We have continually displayed our iconic spirit, encouragement and support of each other in the academic, sporting, House activities and fundraising aspects of school life. Our hunt for the House Cup started in Term 4, 2012 with the annual Melbourne Cup Day festivities. All involved in the Fashions on the Field looked incredible, as did the many cakes that were consumed on the day. We continued our work as a House competing in the trivia, swimming, athletics, cross country and the AFL 9 s competitions. The level of participation evident on these days made me proud to be the Joseph House Captain. Our selling and more or less eating of chocolates continued as the means of fundraising for our charity, Guide Dogs Victoria. We a very honoured to announce that our second guide dog Joey has graduated and will assist a young blind woman, who is a speaker for Vision Australia in Melbourne. I would like to thank the Homeroom Tutors: Mr Gibson, Ms Azzi, Mrs Scott, Mrs Milthorpe, Mr Williams, Mr Lang, Mrs Vardy and Mrs vanegmond for the way they look after and encourage us. The Vice Captains Marisa Lobartolo and Kaitlin Suidgeest have been active in their leadership. Finally, I want to thank the members of Joseph House for giving me the opportunity to have an exciting role as House Captain. I know that the Joseph leaders for 2014 will lead the House to another successful year. Olivia Gallaway FROM THE HOUSE COORDINATOR... It has been a wonderful year for Joseph House. The incoming Year 7 s settled quickly to life at Xavier and in the House. They have upheld the unselfish spirit of involvement on which we pride ourselves. The big smiles on their faces during all the competitive aspects of House life have been priceless. Our Year 12 s have remained that way over the six years they have been with us. We wish them all the best in their life away from school and thank them for all that they have contributed. I would also like to thank the Fawcett, Munro, Nicholson, Bradford, Schultz and Plunkett families, whose long association with the House ends in 2013 with their youngest child completing Year 12. Family support is integral to House culture and these families have been great supporters of Joseph. Olivia and Shane have been exemplary Captains in their organisation, leadership, and support of the House members and myself. Ably assisted by the two Vice Captains, Marisa and Kaitlin and the SRC representatives, Olivia Sinclair and Helena Lethlean, the overall leadership of the House has been strong. It has been particularly pleasing to see other Year 10 and 11 students prepared to step up and help run activities and look after students in their Homerooms. The House is indeed in good hands. Go Joseph! Marg Beecher

27 25 LORETO HOUSE With such a fantastic end to last year with winning the House Cup, we have had huge shoes to fill. We hope that as the House has strengthened and united as a pride, we have succeeded in our mission. This year has just gone so quickly and we can t believe we are handing over captaincy of Loreto already. Finishing fourth in both the Swimming Carnival and the Athletics Carnival this year has not put us in a very good position for the 2013 House Cup, but we are not giving up! This year Loreto has chosen to have, as our charity, the McCowan Trust which has been set up to support the McCowan family after the tragic loss of Allen. We have very much enjoyed our experience as Loreto House Captains of 2013 and would like to thank Paul McAlister and all the Homeroom Tutors for the work and effort they have put towards helping our Loreto Pride achieve their best. Also huge thanks to our Vice House Captains Bridget Lloyd and Fletcher Star. Thank you for supporting us in our decisions and working with us to make the House a strong House. We would also like to thank all the students that make up the mighty Loreto House as this experience would not have been the same without you. We have enjoyed watching the House unite and strengthen as one tight community. Thank you for making this year as Loreto House Captains so enjoyable. Thank you and good luck to every student in the mighty Loreto House. Eloise Hill and Ben Grimmer House Captains GREETINGS FELLOW LORETO LIONS AND CUBS, Another big year for the House, but sadly last year s success in the House Cup could not be repeated. Despite consistent efforts again in the House events we just did not have enough in the tank. However, it has been a pleasure leading a fantastic group of young men and women. This year saw a change in our leadership structure for the House system reducing the number of leaders. The leadership group has done a fantastic job this year and welcomed challenges readily. Thank you to Eloise and Ben for taking on the role to lead the House, both did an outstanding job; to Bridget and Fletcher who did a superb job as wingmen to their House Captains; and to our SRC representatives Lauren and Ella. Thank you all as you have been very proactive in your roles. A big thank you to the wise old lions of Loreto, our Homeroom Tutors, Steve Lancaster, Marie McKinley, Anne Files, Tony Harrington, Avril Lambert and Luke Parkinson; and we welcomed Julia Lockwood to the pride. As always, we welcome the new cubs to the pride Alexia, Lillian, Emma, Kiahna, Monique, Jack, Ronan, Jordyn, Matilda, Connor, Simone, Jacqueline, Daniel, Isaac, Shelby, Georgia, Tessa, Wyatt, Jayden and James. All have settled well into the House and have shown positive involvement in the wider school community. Of course at the end of every year we say our sad farewells to the cubs who have grown to leave the pride as mature, strong and responsible men and women. I always enjoy hearing about the success of our past students and this year s departing Year 12 s will be no exception. Goodbye Mary, Kath, Romni, Ben, Eloise, Victoria, Bill, Bridget, Kate, Darcy, Ben, Fletch and of course Melkie. It has been an honour. Once again, thank you for another great year and I will see you in the next. Paul McAlister House Coordinator

31 MacKILLOP HOUSE Wow, what a busy year we have had. Firstly, I must thank Anne Files and Anne Taylor who did a tremendous job in filling in for me in Term 3 and 4 last year whilst I was on maternity leave. On my return I was pleased to see how smoothly the House had run. Our efforts towards the House Cup this year saw varying results; however, it was great to see an improvement in our attendance and participation throughout the year and I hope that this is the start of a positive trend. I am quick to say that many hands make light work in reference to our attendance, so well done to you all, let s continue this into the future. Our fundraising throughout the year was focused on the Children First Foundation. Through our St Patrick s Day cake stall and our Potato Wedges Day we were able to raise money that will assist in the running of the farm at Kilmore, where families and children can spend time rehabilitating from their medical problems. We were lucky enough to have Mrs Files take our House Captains to the farm last year to get an insight into what the Children First Foundation does. To our outgoing Year 12 students, congratulations on completing your HSC studies and best wishes for your future. Remember you are always a part of the MacKillop family. Lastly a thank you to our leaders who have done their job to the best of their abilities and stood up when asked to help out Ryan Lieschke and Molly Spalding our Captains; Ryan Baldwin, Anna Gates and Elise Williams our Vice Captains; and Tess McCormack and Takysha Brennan our SRC representatives. Also to our Homeroom Tutors, thank you for your efforts throughout the year in supporting your students and our House. Go MacKillop! Emily Scammell House Coordinator 29

35 33 McAULEY HOUSE The Relay for Life gave the House the opportunity to raise awareness and funds to support the Cancer Council. The event was exciting with many community members walking together for the same cause. Everyone was able to make a small contribution to this charitable event, even if they didn t get a chance to walk, through McAuley House fundraising competitions, such as the Jelly Bean Comp and House BBQs. The new editorial team for the House website has allowed students to have up-to-date information available about future events and how we can all get involved. The website has been a key link to the great achievements of McAuley House members over the year. We look forward to seeing this expand in the future. Year 12 students have expanded their mentoring activities with the launch of the Big Brother and Big Sister program. The idea of the program is to allow our experienced senior students to help support and guide junior members as they begin their high school journey. We touch base with different students each day allowing us to connect and bond with House members. The Athletics Carnival was at first washed out but that didn t stop us! On our favourite day of the year McAuley didn t disappoint, crushing competitors and running away with the shield yet again. Good luck for next year, guys. There are lots of things that we have really enjoyed over the past year but the most significant has been the chance to spend more time with people and meeting a wide range of students within our House. Given the chance to talk to others, and through making great friends, we have really seen how much work and effort goes on behind the scenes. This has meant that Aidan and I have seen our role grow and we understand the great responsibility we were given. To next year s leaders, enjoy your last year of school while focusing on making your House better and creating strong bonds you may have for life. Have fun! Tahlia Carroll House Captain

39 37 RICE HOUSE This year saw many changes in our Homeroom with the opening of the brand new block of classrooms and the subsequent removal of our beloved (but less than luxurious) 101 and 102 rooms. In an effort to claim the new building as our own, the staff and students signed a petition expressing our need for new living quarters. Unfortunately, at the time this went to press we were still renting temporary accommodation stay tuned! Rice House took out the top honour at the Swimming Carnival - well - in attendance anyway. And despite having the Athletics Carnival washed out at first, both times around Rice House was represented strongly and participation was commendable. We were proud to be involved in raising money and donating goods to be taken to orphanages in Thailand. Our very own Sally Ryan travelled over to Asia with Mercy International and she was impressed with our efforts in helping children much less fortunate than we are. It was fantastic to see Rice House get behind this very worthy cause and prove that we do indeed live up to our motto Leading by Service. We take this opportunity to thank all of our tutors, co-ordinators and the rest of the House for the support they have given us over the last 6 years, especially in our last year as House Leaders. We will never forget our time as Rice Rhinos. Sharlet Medcraft and Lewis Childs House Captains It s been another great year in Rice House and we are looking forward to the year to come, both as members of the Rice House community, and as leaders. The implementation of the AFL 9 s has given us a great opportunity for a bit of mixed year-level bonding and it has brought us all a little bit closer - to each other and toward the House Cup! For the coming year, we are hoping to expand upon and enhance the already brilliant programs that are currently running within our House and present ourselves with pride in our Rice House family. We have cherished being given the opportunity of being the first Rice House Vice Leaders and it has given us a strong sense of what it takes to help guide our House in the school community. Cecilia Voss and Tyler Rudebeck House Vice Captains We have had a great year in Rice House and have grown together in the true House spirit of being strengthened in unity. Year 7 settled quickly into the House culture and were assisted by their older counterparts and dedicated Homeroom Tutors. I would like to take this opportunity to thank Maria Aranda, Ed Brown, Kathy Boyd, Georgia Kemp, Geoff McClure, Janice O Rourke, Sally Ryan and Aaron West for welcoming me into the House with open arms and minds this year. We were also blessed to have our former House member, Harry Trezise, back on deck as a staff member. We wish him all the best in his university studies next year. We wish our Year 12 contingent all the best in their HSC and hope that their results and the time they have spent at Xavier and in Rice House enable them to embark on their new journey with confidence, enthusiasm and a sense of purpose. 43 41 RELIGIOUS EDUCATION Xavier High School is committed to being a welcoming, compassionate and inclusive community of faith, learning, care, service and stewardship. Religious Education plays a critical role in building on these ideals by providing students with opportunities to encounter and engage with Jesus and his message. (Bishop Hanna s Mandate to all Involved in Catholic Schools). RE is therefore central to the life of our school. As a Catholic faith community, Xavier High School has been called and invited to renew our purpose, identity and direction. This has been incorporated into our school s annual plan, with a clear focus on a whole-school approach to faith formation. Our committed RE staff have continued to deliver the formal RE program with enthusiasm across Years 7-12 in The Sharing Our Story syllabus is implemented in Years 7-12, while the Board of Studies developed course, Studies of Religion, is also offered to our Preliminary and HSC students (Years 11 and 12). Part of this course includes the depth study of Christianity which the students have found both challenging and interesting. All of our Religious Education courses aim to draw forth a deeper understanding and appreciation of the Catholic faith tradition, and we look forward to the continuing learning opportunities these courses offer in The Catholic faith, life and culture of our school is evident in our regular celebrations of the Eucharist and the Sacrament of Reconciliation, in our commitment to prayer and liturgy, and in our examples of faith in action. Yet again, our year involved numerous liturgical celebrations including: Opening School Mass Ash Wednesday Liturgy Class Masses and liturgies House Masses Class Reconciliation (which was made possible through the efforts of Deanery priests coordinated by Fr Brendan Lee) Remembrance Mass The Feast of St Mary MacKillop The Feast of the Assumption Commissioning of our Immersion Experience students and staff Xavier Day Mass Year 12 Graduation Mass Each celebration saw great involvement and cooperation from a large number of our students, including our House liturgy and celebration leaders, all of whom should be commended on their efforts. Students in Years 7-10 have experienced opportunities for prayer, discussion and reflection as part of their camp or Spirituality Days this year. These experiences have been planned and facilitated by members of our school s new Faith and Service Team who have driven these initiatives. A feature of these experiences has been that senior students at Xavier have taken active leadership roles in these programs. Additionally, our Year 11 Retreats took place this year at the Crystal Creek Christian Camp at Alexandra, and the King River Camp. The students spent time reflecting on, My journey, my life, my challenge, and the Year 11 students and staff appreciated the time and change in environment to build positive relationships with one another. Our Year 12 students travelled to Feathertop Chalet, Harrietville, for their Retreat program. Facilitated by a highly committed staff team, the students reflected on their lives, and hopes and fears for the future. The students found it to be an exceptionally life-giving experience and they returned content and strengthened in their understanding of their emerging spiritual journey. This year we have again focused on active faith witness including participating in the Indigenous Community Immersion Experience, and the St Vincent de Paul Society Youth team (incorporating Mini Vinnies ). It is clear that these experiences are fostering within our faith community a deep desire to put faith into action. We again offer our sincere thanks to Fr Kevin Flanagan and Fr Brendan Lee who have again worked tirelessly with us throughout the year. We must also thank those who have contributed and helped with organising our music for liturgies and celebrations. We look forward to another year of learning and faith formation in Edmund Brown Religious Education Coordinator

44 42 XAVIER This year our Xavier Vinnie s conference has been actively putting our faith into action. We have been led by Molly Spalding and Eloise Hill as Co-Presidents and Shaysie Rawlings and Cecilia Voss as Vice Presidents. Our annual Mass and Meal once again proved popular as did our Rice Day with students from St Anne s. We continue to raise money to sponsor a student and also provide ongoing support for the students attending the Immersion Experience. There is a Vinnie s sleep-out planned for later this year. A group of Year 10 students attended a Justice Matters Camp in Harrietville along with students from the Sandhurst Diocese. They participated in a range of workshop and seminars about social justice in both their community and in the wider world. Some of our senior members facilitated one of the workshops. All returned inspired to undertake a number of social justice initiatives in the community. In the wider Vinnie s community our senior members have participated in buddies days and kids camps, initiatives organised by the St Vincent de Paul Society for students in the Wagga Wagga Diocese who may be facing hardship. We have had a very busy and rewarding 2013 and hope to continue our good work next year. There has been a significant growth in numbers and all students from Years 7 12 are welcome to join. Cecilia Voss Vice President

45 43 We acknowledge the traditional owners of this land, the Wiradjuri people and their elders both past and present Participating in this Immersion Experience has been the most exciting, nerve racking and rewarding experience of our lives. It was a drastic change from the comforts of our home, to the Aboriginal communities of Santa Teresa and Yuendumu, which hit us as soon as we arrived. Santa Teresa is a relatively peaceful community in which, in the little time we had, we experienced an overwhelming sense of togetherness and community spirit in everything that we did. At Yuendumu, we were welcomed into the school community, where we spent countless hours in the classrooms and outdoors with the kids, gaining an insight into their culture and lifestyle. All the kids from the school were amazing. They were all so fun loving and always smiling, having fun and just enjoying life. After spending only four days with them, we were all attached and not wanting to leave. We already want to go back. We are all extremely privileged to have been given the opportunity to participate in this truly life changing experience and it is definitely one that we will never forget. We now have the role of continuing the conversation within our school and of supporting those participating in future years Immersion Students: Victoria Keogh, Jess Mitsch and Marisa LoBartolo

50 48 ENGLISH REPORT English classrooms have been as active and busy as ever this year. Students and staff alike have worked hard to ensure that we are ready for the implementation of the new syllabus in 2014 and have been trialling a number of different approaches to teaching and learning has been a year of success in and out of the classroom. You can read about our public speakers and debaters elsewhere in the magazine, but we had a number of students enter local and national writing competitions with varied success including winners of the River of Stories Writing Competition. Keep your eyes out next year for more chances to win cash and some great prizes for your writing! We had a range of performers visit the school this year, with an attempt made to cover all year groups (as much as we could). Poetry in Action presented two performances to Year 7 and Year 9 making poetry engaging and entertaining for these students. These performers impressed the students and staff alike, and we look forward to getting them back in the future. Our Year 12 Standard English students attended a performance of The Shoehorn Sonata in Wagga as part of preparation for their HSC Exams. This performance was well received and a wonderful experience for those students. Our Year 11 English Studies class learnt that English certainly is everywhere with their annual trip to the AFL - another successful excursion - and our HSC Extension 2 English student participated in the Open Mike Night held at Charles Sturt University. Back in the classroom, we have been busy making sure that everything we do is valued. The English Department has well and truly embraced The Hub as a flexible space for co-teaching and inquiry learning. Classes from all year levels have had opportunities to experiment in these new rooms and in 2014 and beyond will see the exciting work becoming a part of our normal practice in English at XHS. Once again, we have been blessed to have a wonderful staff working in the English classrooms this year and we need to acknowledge their hard work: Marie McKinley, Lesley Gardner, Marg Beecher, Rod Lang, Kathryn vanegmond, Anne Taylor, Avril Lambert, Mick Ryan, Helen Stewart-Hawkins, Janice O Rourke, Karyn Crosswell, Peter Robinson, Genevieve O Reilly, Dale Gleeson and Michelle Milthorpe. On to 2014 Shaun Mason English Coordinator

51 49 YEAR 7 & 8 EISTEDDFORD DEBATING COMPETITION Two strong Year 7 and 8 teams competed in this year s Festival of Sight and Sound Eisteddfod Debating Competition. Competing against local schools, both teams demonstrated some impressive talent and improving skills in public speaking. James O Brien, Hannah Walsh, Emily Cameron and Campbell Westmoreland competed in the Year 7 division. Each speaker managed to put forward strong arguments and they participated excellently as a team. To their credit, Tiana Smerdon, Kaitlyn McGowan, Sarah Reed, Imara Buchanan, Helena Lethlean in Year 8 won three of their four debates, resulting in equal first place with St Paul s College of Walla Walla. Debating is an extremely beneficial and worthwhile form of public speaking as it assists in improving overall organisation, team work, writing, speaking and listening skills and furthermore, is extremely enjoyable. Well done to our debaters for Erik Hamilton English Teacher

52 50 L.O.T.E. LANGUAGES OTHER THAN ENGLISH FRENCH REPORT 2013 The French Department has had another exciting year. Students from Years 7, 9 and 10 enjoyed a busy and fun year under the tutelage of Madame Abouchedid, Madame Claney and Madame Aranda. Year 7 students were given an introduction to the French language and the cultural aspects of French speaking communities. Students began the year with a virtual trip to Paris, where their classroom was transformed into an aeroplane. Research on the highlights of Paris was an interesting and relevant follow up to this activity. Coinciding with the Tour de France, students investigated their favourite sports in France and even participated in Pétanque. French Fashion was a highlight of Semester Two, where students designed and completed outfits for mannequins and presented their own fashion parades in French. The unit on Food was complemented, to the students delight, with a variety of interactive French games and activities which made the learning much more enjoyable and relevant. Year 9 and 10 students showed great interest in learning French. The Elite groups, as called by their native French speaker teacher, Madame Abouchedid, worked hard and with enthusiasm to improve their knowledge and skills in learning a language other than English. They were constantly engaged and involved through the use of ICT and challenging learning activities. They participated in an excursion to the Albury French Film Festival. They viewed the hilarious French movie Astérix Et Obélix Au Service De Sa Majesté. They also enjoyed an authentic delicious French breakfast at Anthony s Crêperie. Students visited several French inspired establishments, and the Noreuil Park Cairn, symbol of the historical connection between Albury and its sister city in France, Noreuil, during WWI. In Term 3, our students in Year 10 explored two fabulous French exhibitions ( Apprendre et réfléchir avec les petites bêtes and Vive la France ) at different Melbourne Museums. This cultural experience was complemented with a French gastronomic trail around Melbourne CBD. Merci beaucoup à tous pour votre bon travail et effort en français cette année. A l année prochaine. Au Revoir. Maria Aranda LOTE Coordinator

53 51 MATHEMATICS REPORT This year has been another busy one in the Maths department. Mrs Ellis laid a strong foundation for the department with innovative ways of assessment, particularly in the junior years, until she took maternity leave. As teachers, we are always striving to make Maths more relevant and engaging for the students. Our world is rapidly changing and the skill set to operate within it is evolving. Our focus this year has been to further develop the use of technology in the classroom to engage and assist students in their learning. The continued use of Netbooks in Years 9, 10, 11 and 12 provided new ways of sharing information. Our main focus this year has been using Schoology to provide information to students and parents on various units of work, using online assessment tools such as quizzes and tests, and providing a forum for students to ask questions. Other technology found in classrooms this year included such programs as Geogebra, Geometers Sketchpad, Graph, as well as a number of apps on the ipad and students personal devices, which helped to engage students in Maths tasks in a technological way. Notable Maths events this year have included: Pi Day: This day was celebrated around the school on March 14th (14/3; π = 3.14) as students participated in some Pi trivia during Homeroom and party pies were sold at the canteen. Erin Smyth was the winner of the Anne Corr trophy as the champion of the Pi Recital competition. She recited pi to an incredible 137 digits! Year 9 Trade Day: Students enjoyed learning where Maths is applicable in the real world when they went to the Albury TAFE. Students participated in two workshops from the following trades: Hairdressing, Tourism, Hospitality, Electrical, Metals and Engineering, Construction, Plumbing and Automotive. The workshops focused on how maths was used in real life situations and involved some hands-on activities that used different mathematical ideas and calculations. Year 7 World of Maths Day: Year 7 students were able to engage in a number of hands-on tasks requiring problem solving and lateral thinking, with the travelling Maths Show that teaches students to think about Maths in a creative and positive way. Maths Olympiad competition: Thirty Year 7 and 8 students were selected on the basis of their NAPLAN results, to participate in a logic and problem solving competition run by APSMO. The students results were tallied both as individuals and as a team, and they competed against other Year 7 and 8 students from all over the country. The results of the competition are to be published in the newsletter in Term 4, so stay tuned! The Milo Maths after-school assistance program continued on Monday afternoons of each term in Many students committed to the program almost every week, as well as some other students who attended when needed. Thank you to the staff who volunteered their time to support this program. Students who attended enjoyed a warm Milo in winter or a cordial in the warmer weather and the biscuits on offer. The QuickSmart program continued in its third year for a select group of Year 8 students, with the view to improving the speed and accuracy of their basic arithmetic skills. The feedback from both staff and students continued to be positive, with students enjoying their sessions and teachers noticing improvements in overall confidence and achievement. This year saw the introduction of the Year 11 General Mathematics course incorporating the changes from the Australian Curriculum. Next year will see the introduction of a new General Mathematics course for HSC students. The main changes are the inclusion of Focus Areas of study, as well as the course being divided into two courses (ATAR and non-atar) for the HSC year. This year, Maths staff have been working on various Year 7 and 9 Maths units in preparation for the implementation of the Australian Curriculum into the programs next year. Planning for Year 8 and 10 will occur in 2014 for implementation in The implementation of the Australian Curriculum has provided a great opportunity for teachers to be reflective and innovative in their approach to engaging students and improving student outcomes. None of these changes can occur without the dedication and hard work of the Maths staff. Geoff McClure Acting Mathematics Coordinator

56 54 HSIE REPORT COMMERCE Year 10 Commerce students have been learning about the law, employment issues, and living independently. The highlight of the year was during our focus on law; we had the opportunity to visit Albury District Court House and NSW Corrective Services. We were able to talk to police, a magistrate and gaol staff about issues with people and the law. After this, we had the chance to put on hand-cuffs, riot gear, and be locked up in a prison cell an experience that we hope not to be on the receiving end of! Dominique Beer and Zachary Rickard Year 10 Students Our Year 9 elective Commerce class has been studying everything to do with commerce since the beginning of the year. In Semester One, Commerce classes were combined to embark on an excursion to the Lavington Shopping Centre. Whilst there we were challenged to find items on a shopping list for the lowest amount possible. The boys were so lost! In Semester 2 we put theory into practice by running our own business. This was fun and an enjoyable experience that we recommend to all. Leneen Marshall and Jessica Bennett Year 9 Students

57 55 GEOGRAPHY In Year 9 Geography we didn t know what to expect, with a new teacher, new subject and new classmates. We knew it was going to be an experience to remember. Little did we know that we would learn so much and have a dead set ripper time. We had a great first term learning about physical environments and the effect they have on the community. In the second term we looked at how humans interact with the environment. It was a semester that had it all, learning, jeopardy and even finding out what BLAH means (Biosphere, Lithosphere, Atmosphere and Hydrosphere). All in all we had a great time and learnt a whole lot of new ideas. Billy Robertson and Scott Robinson Year 9 Students As part of the Land Management unit in Year 10 Geography, all students undertook fieldwork at Mungabareena Reserve to gain a first-hand look at land degradation along the Murray River and within the reserve. Students spent their afternoon mapping, recording evidence of land degradation, as well as noting down how the reserve is currently being used and managed. Back at school, the students then spent time redeveloping the area into an environmentally friendly and sustainable sporting complex. Photo courtesy Border Mail.

58 56 ANZAC DAY ASSEMBLY Every year we take the opportunity to commemorate the role of Australian Service Personnel. This year our theme was Peacekeeping, which was timely as this year was the first time that Peacekeepers, who had made the ultimate sacrifice for their country, had been recognised on the honour role of the War Memorial. We were very fortunate to have the opportunity to listen to Colonel Duncan Polich, the Commandant of the Area Logistic Training Centre in Bandiana, address the assembly. Colonel Polich has been involved in a number of peacekeeping operations overseas, including serving in Afghanistan in During his presentation he shared stories about his job overseas. Most memorable was his moving recount of the role of the working dogs and the stories of their involvement in battles. A few of the audience members were awarded prizes when they were able to share correct answers in regard to the extensive representation of Australians in overseas operations. 60 After significant changes in 2012, the Resource Centre has continued to develop. With the completion and grand opening of our new Learning Hub adjoining the Resource Centre, Xavier High School is now firmly placed as a leader in innovative and collaborative teaching. With the Resource Centre integrally connected to the new Learning Hub, technology is now even more accessible for all the students. Continuing our 21st Century transformation in the Resource Centre, Xavier has continued offering a broad range of digital resources for our students. This year Xavier High School, our Diocese of Wagga Wagga and all Catholic Schools in the state have been investigating the implications of a one-to-one environment using Samsung Google Chromebooks. To this end, we have a class set of Chromebooks with which classes have been taking advantage of in our open-learning environments. Classes using the Chromebooks are supported to help facilitate successful integration with online collaborative activities. The Chromebook itself is a lightweight machine, most aptly described as a Web book due to its lack of an operating system (Windows, ios, Android), running purely on Google Chrome... yes, the operating system is a web browser. This brings many possibilities, perfectly integrating with the Google Apps suite that has been provided by our Catholic School Office. This fundamental concept also brings with it limitations when compared to our current environment that must be considered. Limitations aside, student feedback from those that are using these devices is extremely positive. These are exciting times for Xavier High School moving forward into the future! 61 59 SCIENCE REPORT The Science department has had another busy and successful year full of activities, events and excursions. National Science Week gave a chance for our junior science classes to participate in some fun science activities. Student were able to carry out some of their favourite pracs, including egg drops and making elephant s toothpaste as well as participating in science trivia competitions. In Term 2, Year 8 were entertained by our yearly visit by the CSIRO Education Centres. This year the show s theme was Energy, Forces and Motion that explored matter energy and how they interact. The students got to watch and participate in demonstrations that allowed them to visualise magnetic fields with ferrofluids, investigate magnetic braking and freezing motion. The students always enjoy the show and we look forward to what the CSIRO will have in store for Year 8 in In May, our Year 7 students competed in the ASI Big Science Competition. This is an International competition that allows students to challenge themselves. Questions are aligned with the Australian Curriculum and test student s critical thinking and problem solving as well as their science knowledge. Of the three hundred and thirty four Xavier students that participated in the contest, eleven students were awarded Credits, and five students were awarded Distinctions. Distinctions were awarded to:- Credits were awarded to:- Taylor Baker Maggie Duck Felicity Melton Declan Brady Matthew Dunstan Jordi Nugent Emma Dunn Fraser Duryea Tom Rattenbury Callum Riley Mason Fuller Tessa Sweetland Jessica Williams Sean Kenny Hannah Walsh Mitchell McLeod Similar to last year with the visit of Professor Brian Schmidt, our Year 11 students were fortunate to be able to attend a lecture at Charles Sturt University presented by Professor Barry Jones as part of Science Week. A Year 11 representative from each school was also invited to have afternoon tea with Barry Jones. Kyle McBain represented Xavier and found the experience most enjoyable. Barry Jones is inspiring. He has such a wide range of knowledge and insight into the role of politics in Science. Xavier High School was honoured to have a student attend the National Youth Science Forum, in January Billy Lewis (Year 12) was selected to attend the Rotary event, hosted by ANU in Canberra over 10 days in January. This year, we are lucky to have had two of our nominated students selected to attend the forum in We congratulate Emily Pattison and Kyle McBain of Year 11 on their nomination and look forward to hearing of their adventures. 64 62 CREATIVE AND PERFORMING ARTS DRAMA Drama for me has been the highlight of my Year 11 school life. It has given me confidence in myself and my work. I have learnt how to be in the moment when acting, being true to the character I am portraying, fluent and expressive in my writing. We have had amazing experiences this year including acting workshop with Travis Dowling from Hothouse, James Monarski from Off the Beaten Track, theatre makeup workshops and excursions to see a variety of professional performances. In Year 11 Drama you learn about directors, playwrights and their influence on theatre. It s not only acting, but stage design, scriptwriting, lighting, costume design and promotional design, directing and character work. Year 11 Drama is an amazing amount of fun, but it is also packed full of topics and experiences that I believe will help me with my future skills, skills that help you with every other school subject. My public speaking ability has sky rocketed and I have an abundance of confidence talking to classmates, customers and teachers. I believe the Creative Arts Department deserves a lot of recognition for the work they do in allowing students to express themselves and be true to themselves. Bonnie Moore Year 11 MUSIC Studying music this year has been hectic to say the least. The many excursions, the Albury Eisteddfod, Kool Skools recording and many performance experiences have been beneficial, challenging and enjoyable in assisting us in being able to achieve the very best we can. Although it has been demanding at times, with the help of Ms Files and the support of one another we ve loved all aspects of the senior music course and are extremely proud of everything we ve achieved this year. The Music course is great for people looking for a creative release from other subjects. It provides the freedom to choose your direction, build and maintain strong friendships and create amazing bonds within the class while improving both theory and practical aspects of performance. It has been an amazing year of music, one that I will look back on very fondly. Sharlet Medcraft Year 12 VISUAL ARTS This year, I have been a Year 11 Visual Arts student in Miss Boyd s class. It has been a roller coaster of demands, deadlines and amazing results. Art has been my favourite subject this year, as it has been a place to make new friends and develop my art making skills to lengths I never thought possible. While being in this class it has helped me grow in both my artmaking and as a person, supported fully by all the members of our class. This year we have had the opportunity to attend the ArtExpress in Wagga, showcasing a variety of the best HSC artworks from the previous year including Xavier High School. Everyone was inspired to push their art to an even higher standard. This year, my art experience has led me to encourage everyone to join in and share a year where laughter, fun and great times are always a guarantee. Emily Pattison Year 11

70 68 TECHNOLOGICAL AND APPLIED STUDIES For my Year 12 Major Project I made an Electric Guitar, a project which was extremely challenging and rewarding making it one of the best experiences I have been involved in at school. Designs were thought up, measurements were made and timber was selected and I was ready to start. I remember the feeling; everyone in the class met the project with absolute enthusiasm. A lot of effort, work and time, from both myself and Mr Peter Williams went into my final result, which I was really happy with. The things I learnt in the subject are skills I will keep throughout my life, and the time spent in the workshop with a great support base of teachers and friends will be times I will also cherish for a long time to come. I would encourage any students to participate in this subject as it caters for young and older students who are willing to have a go and enjoy hands on work; and the result is a great project and something physical to show your time at Xavier and something to be proud of. Matt Bradford HSC Student Industrial Technology (Timber) Throughout the 2012/13 year, the HSC woodwork class has been putting in many hard hours, under the watchful eye of Mr Peter Williams, all focused towards finishing their major projects. My project is a Victorian period Blackwood Duchess that was inspired by my mother s dresser. I am extremely proud of what I have been able to achieve. It is well worth the many hours spent designing and constructing it, and dealing with the many complications that arose. TAS has been an extremely rewarding experience for the entire class. We are not only leaving high school with a lifelong, high quality piece of furniture, but with a strong bond that has been formed between classmates and our teacher. In July our Careers newsletter, which contains dates, links and lots of other useful information, was launched. The newsletter is available on the Xavier Careers website at Newsletters, under the Information menu. ( Not only will you find our own newsletter, but also Weekly Careers News which contains news and information from various universities and career organisations, especially from NSW and Victoria. There is also a calendar and the website is updated constantly. It is really a must for school leavers. Tony Harrington Careers Coordinator 72

75 V.E.T. Xavier has had Year 11 students doing their HSC in Construction and Hospitality. Other Year 11 students have been doing their Preliminary Year in Entertainment (the first time the subject has been offered) and Hospitality. 76 VAMPIRE SHIELD - BLOOD DONATIONS The generosity of our students was again demonstrated this year with the healthy number of students offering to donate blood. During Term 3 we were able to commit to appointments on a Wednesday and Friday afternoon with many of our students keen to donate. Lots of new students were added to our list and were ever so reliable in meeting their appointments throughout the year. Xavier participates in the secondary schools Vampire Shield competition which calculates the number of donations made over the school year. We are always improving, but our main focus is the donation aspect of giving something to those in need. I would like to take this opportunity to sincerely thank our 2012/2013 Blood Ambassador Jessica Mitsch for the work and time she has given to this role. Jessica was instrumental in assisting with the organisation of the blood bank roster and the development of our Xavier Blood Donors Facebook page. Jessica would often accompany new donors to the blood bank, assisting them with their first donation. Jessica also attended the Blood Ambassador training program in late 2012 and was extremely helpful in assisting in the running of the Xavier Day Blood Typing stall on Xavier Day. Thank you Jessica for your selfless commitment to this role. We look forward to donating in Belinda Warner Coordinator Vampire Shield CHESS REPORT This was a year of transition. Brendan Graham, Liam Richardson and (until this year) Liam Thompson have been mainstays of the best school chess team that Xavier has ever had. They have been impeccable representatives of the school, and very strong chess players, with impressive powers of sustained concentration. Unfortunately this is their final year of secondary school, though not, I hope, the end of their competitive chess careers. Carrying the banner forward are Ben Randall (now our Board 1 player) and James Richardson, both in Year 10. These boys will provide the strength and experience necessary to support the younger players presently being developed to replace our veterans. Ben is already a very experienced competitor, and he represented us on Board 1 in the last match of this year, putting in an impressive marathon effort that showed a high level of expertise. We are fortunate to have a number of keen players in Years 7 and 8 who are already showing the skills and the readiness to learn that are the hallmarks of strong players of the future. Two boys Jack Jankauskas and Campbell Westmoreland have already been blooded in interschool competition, and there are three or four others of a very similar standard who will make a serious claim on team selection in Peter Robinson Chess Coach 74

Overall results had Xavier 2nd in the boys division, 4th in the girls and 2nd for overall school champion. Congratulations to Kolby Hennessy (13 Years Boys) and Lachlan Davison (Senior Boys) who both competed strongly and were crowned Age Champions. Jessica Reid was 3rd for the 15 Years Girls Age Champion. Well done to all competitors and thanks to the many parents for their support on the day. CCC SWIMMING In April, a small group of Xavier students made the trek to Sydney to represent the Wagga Wagga Diocese at CCC Swimming Championships. 86 84 XAVIER ATHLETICS CARNIVAL After a false start with our first attempt, the Athletics Carnival finally went ahead in May. What started as a cloudy day finished in glowing sunlight and saw some amazing performances on both the track and in the field. The level of House spirit was extremely pleasing to see, with a large amount of effort put into outfits for the day. All students are to be commended for the level of support and encouragement they showed towards other students. 88 86 XAVIER CROSS COUNTRY The Xavier Cross Country was run on the school grounds, over two days, in May. Due to the rain which delayed our Athletics late in Term One, our Cross Country took on a slightly different structure to allow all students the opportunity to compete. Despite participation being optional this year, numbers were encouraging, particularly amongst our junior students. There were some outstanding performances in both the boys and the girls, showing that long distance running continues to be strength in our sports department. Congratulations to all who took part, particularly the age champions who are listed below. 91 89 The boys of the Xavier Hockey team 2013 played an outstanding series of games at Wagga Wagga in March. The boys had a slow start to the first two round games but came away with wins in each. This enabled them to progress to the grand final. They had a clear 7-0 win in the final game where they proved to be lethal in front of the goals. The team was led by the senior boys who were an excellent example for their younger team members. Overall it was a great day with all the boys pitching in and having a great time. The team played exceptionally well throughout the day and were rewarded for their efforts. Best players on the day were Dylan MacLennan and Matthew Baker. A special mention goes to Patrick Baine, the goalie, who did not let anything past him all day. In March the girls hockey team went to Wagga Wagga to play in the Diocesan carnival. The girls played two games against Kildare Catholic College. The first game was tight and the girls came away with a 1-1 draw thanks to Madison Snell s scoring abilities. The girls learnt from their mistakes in the first game and had a convincing 3-0 win in the second game. The goal scorers in this game were Meg Gibbs, Ashleigh Gould and Anna Corrigan. Maddi Creamer put on a magnificent display of talent in goals on the day. The results across the day enabled the girls to come away with the prestigious title of Diocesan Hockey Champions. The best players were Jaime Gould and Ashleigh Gould. Amy Martin Coach HOCKEY GALA DAY

92 90 EQUESTRIAN The Equestrian Team represented Xavier at the annual Scots Equestrian Interschool Challenge. Equestrian at the top levels is one of the most challenging, dangerous and physically demanding sports there are. Those who choose a sporting career with horses know that the daily training and care of the horse is very demanding, and only those most dedicated tend to stick with it. The Interschool Equestrian movement is huge across the country, especially in the capital cities. It is wonderful that our country riders have the opportunity to represent their school in their chosen sport, as a large part of the general population is unaware of the sport and school involvement. Riders took part in show jumping, handy mount, dressage and novelty competitions, and although at the grass roots level of equestrian competition many competitors are there for sheer enjoyment, many also take their competition very seriously, with riders coming from as far as Melbourne to compete at this event. There has been a lot of interest from parents who were unaware that this event was on, so hopefully in 2014 there will be many more riders representing Xavier. We were represented this year by Johanna Harris-Draper (Year 12), Kaitlyn McGowan (Year 8) and Hannah Walsh (Year 7). Hannah and Johanna both finished the day with a hard earned placing in their events. Julia Lockwood Team Manager

93 91 CCC TENNIS In June our boys tennis team, consisting of Isaac Dallinger, Mitchell Lawrence, Will Mannering and Matt Bradford competed in the CCC Tennis Tournament in Bathurst. On what proved to be a bitterly cold winter s day our boys braved the conditions coming up against a very skilled John Paul College outfit from Coffs Harbour. Unfortunately we lost this first round match, which meant we were knocked out of the main competition. The boys did get another consolation match against O Connor College of Armidale, which they won comfortably five sets to three. Isaac Dallinger played well on the day winning both his singles matches. The boys also played a combination of doubles together winning three out of the possible four sets against O Connor College. The team should be extremely proud of their efforts throughout the day as they displayed great skill, teamwork and most importantly superb sportsmanship. Well done. Jake Oldfield Tennis Manager SOCCER In May the Senior Boys and Girls soccer teams travelled to the Yoogali club ovals in Griffith to participate in the Diocesan knockout carnival. The girls team got off to a slow start in the knockout carnival with a loss to both Mater Dei Catholic College and Marion Catholic College. The team then found their feet and secured strong wins against Kildare and St Francis College. Despite some great results they failed to gain a spot in the final. The girls performed very well throughout the day and the star players included Louise Smith, Emily Minall and Claire Mahoney. These three were selected to represent the diocesan team. The boys squad had better results throughout the day with wins against Mater Dei Catholic College, St Francis and Kildare Catholic College. With these results and a draw against Marion Catholic in the round games, they earned their position in the grand final. The boys had a rematch against Marion Catholic College in the fight to become diocesan champions. The game was a close battle and the boys put in a strong team performance to come out on top with a 1-0 win in extra time making them the champions on the day. All players performed strongly across the day and four boys were selected in the diocesan team. These were Adam Weston, Shane Ellwood, Melkie Woldmichael and Alex Eggleston. All students involved in the Senior Boys and Girls soccer teams are to be commended for their performance and the way they conducted themselves on the day. Amy Martin Coach

94 BASKETBALL In June, our Senior Boys basketball team travelled to Penrith to contest the NSW CCC Championships. Throughout the two days the boys applied themselves extremely well, acting as excellent ambassadors of the school. On day one the team defeated Gilroy College, Castle Hill in the first game quite comfortably, however was narrowly defeated by St Dom s Penrith in the second game. The last game for the day saw them come up against the traditionally strong St Edwards of Gosford. In a spirited performance, with an injury and tired bodies the boys pulled through with a convincing win. This saw them finish second in their pool, pitting them against St Pat s Fairlfield in the quarter final. The boys started extremely well in the quarter final and despite being undermanned through injury, stayed with the St Pat s team the whole game. The much bigger Fairfield squad became frustrated at not being able to shake them with tensions running high. To our boys credit they kept their cool and played an excellent brand of basketball. Unfortunately they could not quite get over the line, losing by five points. Congratulations to all the boys who were a part of the team and to Jody and Steve Newton for their assistance with scoring over the two days. A special thanks to Jane Mackinlay who came away and acted as team manager for the two days. JUNIOR CCC BASKETBALL One of the longer bus trips in recent memory was undertaken by our junior basketball teams when they ventured to Tamworth for the CCC Junior Finals. All four teams were successful at the Wagga Wagga Diocesan level, qualifying them to take on the best teams from all around NSW. In what turned out to be a very tough pool, the junior boys were for the most part unable to put together consistent efforts for the full duration of their games. All Saints St Joseph s of Lochinvar managed to get the early jump in the boys first game, which proved to be the only difference. The second game against St Leo s was much closer, with the teams unable to be split at the end of regulation time. The final two round games against St Dom s and St Paul s showed flashes of brilliance from the Xavier boys, but this was not sustained, resulting in two defeats. The leading lights of the campaign were our junior girls. Remarkably, these girls were involved in the tightest division at our local carnival, showing a great strength in our area for this age. In the girls first game against All Saints, Saint Peter s of Maitland, determination was abundant. In spite of some questionable calls, the girls were able to hold on and win by one point. Monte Saint Angelo from Sydney have recently proven to be quite strong on the basketball court. Our girls acquitted themselves extremely well and emerged nine point victors. With two victories under their belts and feeling confident, the girls came up against Coffs Harbour. Limited scoring in the first half held the girls back, but they rallied to get within three points. Unfortunately it was not to be and the girls went down in a close one. Their final game against Caroline Chisolm was another hard fought battle where the girls managed to get within three again at the final siren. Unfortunately the girls just missed out on the semi-finals, in which it turns out they would have been a massive chance. Promising a great amount from the onset, the intermediate boys side showed some inspired displays of skill and finesse throughout their round games. The first game against McCarthy College could not be split with a 38 all draw. An extremely athletic Patrician Brothers Blacktown proved to be too strong on the boards and the boys went down by nine in the second game. Not for lack of enthusiasm, the boys last two games against Coffs Harbour and Bellambi were tough going against very classy opposition. At stages throughout both games the boys showed excellent creativity, but the sustained pressure from the opposition made it difficult. Through injury, our intermediate girls were a little understaffed. Showing great spirit, the girls battled through their round games. Drawing a pool with MacKillop, St Mary s Star of the Sea, St Mary s Gateshead and John Paul College things were always going to be tough. Much like the intermediate boys, the girls were able to put together some outstanding defence and offensive passages, but sustaining these efforts with consistency proved to be difficult. Congratulations to all students involved in the trip on the way in which they conducted themselves and represented Xavier. Andrew Gibson Sports Coordinator 92

96 94 NETBALL 2013 began with the aim of heading back to the NSW CCC Championships in Penrith, after a two year break seeking competition in Victoria. Lunchtime trials for selections were fiercely contested, particularly in the junior years of the school. Our first carnival in Wagga for the Diocesan Netball day was a false start due to inclement weather. It eventually took place early in Term 3 with some impressive results for Xavier. Our Junior A team were beaten by Mater Dei in the semi-final round by a much bigger and stronger team. Our Junior B team played admirably all day with only a few narrow loses. The Intermediate teams saw varied success for the B team while the A team were carnival winners defeating Mater Dei. The Seniors played solidly throughout the day going down to a more experienced Mater Dei team in the final. The local Albury Wodonga Secondary School Carnival in July was well attended by all local secondary schools from both sides of the border. Xavier were successful in winning the Junior division from Catholic College Wodonga and the Intermediate division from Billabong High School. The seniors were defeated in a close semi-final by Albury High School. The NSW CCC Championships were held in Penrith in August. The Intermediate team were our best performers, finishing impressively as state runners up. They were defeated by a strong Holy Spirit Bellambi by five goals. The seniors were competitive throughout the day, having mixed results but coming away having tried their best and enjoying the experience. The Junior A team played a number of strong teams in Sydney. Unfortunately we were beaten twice throughout the day which put us out of finals contention. The Junior B team played in the minors division and were quite consistent throughout the day, finishing with their fair share of wins and losses. We have had some great support throughout our 2013 netball program, none more so than from Fiona Boyer and Sharon Riley who have stepped in to fulfill various roles throughout the season. Thank you. Also thanks to our student umpires Meg Neville, Aimee Riley, Dominique Beer and Maddy Van Emmerik. The work of the coaches is also invaluable. Emily Scammell (Seniors), Belinda Warner (Juniors), Amy Martin (Juniors) and Joanne Gleeson (Intermediates). RUGBY LEAGUE Congratulations to both of our Rugby League teams on a successful year. The Junior Boys were victorious over Albury High in the finals of the Thunder Cup with a win. This team was the dominant force in the competition and showed great skill and commitment in all their games. Jake Bates led the team well thoughout the competition. Other players of note were Brandon Thomas, Shaun Webb and Harry Nunn. The Senior Rugby League team displayed many spirited efforts throughout the competition often taking the field with a depleted bench. The boys even managed to play an entire match with only 13 players and to their credit they went into halftime only down to Murray High School. This was typical of the team s determined attitude with all the boys putting in a gutsy effort every game. The best players were Andrew Mackinlay, Sam Brodie, Jack Blair and Elliott Longfield. 98 96 Xavier High School again took part in the annual Thunder Cup Secondary Schools Girls League Tag competition that was run in conjunction with the Rugby League competition. Our junior and senior girls teams played Wednesday nights at Greenfield Park against Albury High School, Murray High School and James Fallon High School. Our junior girls team improved greatly throughout the competition and showed positive signs for the future of league tag at our school. Even though they were unsuccessful in winning any of their round games the girls scored a number of impressive tries against some very good teams. The girls must be commended on the way they represented the school. The team was patient, co-operative and definitely improved throughout the round games. Our senior girls continue to be strong and showed again this year great athleticism every week. This team was a competitive and strong group of girls who were again successful in winning the grand final against Albury High School. Our girls were solid in defence and were able to intercept and run away with a number of impressive tries from some great running and passing throughout the competition. It was a tough encounter against Albury High School but our girls were hungry for victory and took out the grand final by only four points. Congratulations to all of the girls who also represented the school admirably throughout the competition. We look forward to next Belinda Warner League Tag Coach LEAGUE TAG TOUCH FOOTBALL Touch Football in Wagga proved to be a busy day with our four Xavier High School teams taking on some very experienced and skilful teams from around the diocese. Both Senior and Junior teams finished fifth overall. They maintained effort throughout the day despite some tough competition. Standout players for the Senior teams included Maddi Smith, and Dominique Beer for the girls and Jack Blair and Callum George for the boys. The Junior Boys played well and were close to victory on several occasions, although inexperience at times went against us. Standout players were Jack Kirley, and Shaun Webb. Junior Girls finished well scoring a try in their last game which was a victory for the day. Grace Senior and Lily Ratcliffe-Reid both performed well throughout the day with Lily scoring that spectacular solo try! Jake Oldfield Coach

Best: Jake Bates, Harry Nunn, Doulton Langlands, Nick McAuley, Jack Takle Round 2 - Xavier def Corowa HS Xavier were able to take control of the game after half time with Billy Robertson providing a focal point for our hardworking dominant midfield. Connor Ranking dominated hit outs with Ben Lloyd providing several clearances and pinpoint passes to our forward line. Well done on a solid team performance. Goals: Billy Robertson 5, Lachlan Gibbons 2, Callum Pattinson 1, Nick McAuley 1, Braden McGregor 1, Lachlan Tanner 1. Best: Billy Robertson, Ben Lloyd, Connor Ranking, Jack Scammell, Doulton Langlands, Jack King Local Grand Final - Xavier def Murray HS Xavier s class prevailed as Xavier ran away convincing winners of the Xavier Tanner Shield U/15 competition. Xavier dominated from the opening bounce and were far too strong for Murray High School. All players contributed significantly throughout the competition, and on the night the boys strung it all together to cap off an outstanding campaign. Best: Harry Nunn, Ben Lloyd, Fletcher Carroll, Jack Kirley, Lachlan Gould, Jack Scammell Goals: Harry Nunn 6, Ben Lloyd 6, Ryan Haberecht, Lachie Gibbons, Braden McGregor, Nick McAuley, Lachlan Gould, Hayden Fischer Aaron West Junior AFL Coach U14 BUSHRANGER CUP AFL Xavier enjoyed a successful day, winning all of their pool games, including a demolition job against Murray HS, a close and hard fought win against Trinity and a one sided victory against James Fallon. The semi against Scots was close throughout with Xavier struggling to break clear, until Joel Robertson, Dalton Langlands and Lachlan Tanner led Xavier to a solid victory. In the final against Albury HS Xavier dominated possession early but kicked a wasteful 1 goal 7 in the first half. Jarrah Moran was outstanding across halfback. Xavier continued to play well in the second half and ran out comfortable 29 point winners. Xavier s better players on the day were Dalton Langlands, Lachlan Tanner, Tom O Brien, Joel Robertson, Lachlan Gibbons, Callum Pattison, Joel Turner and Jake Carter. Game 1: Xavier def MHS Game 2: Xavier def Trinity Game 3: Xavier def JFHS Semi: Xavier def Scots Final: Xavier def AHS 0-1-1

103 101 AUSSIE RULES continued U14 AFL GIANTS CUP RIVERINA FINALS Xavier s U14 team had a mixed day at McPherson Oval, winning 1 of their pool games, before 2 unfortunate losses. The game against Finley was hard fought, but Xavier dominated contested balls and defended well throughout to record a strong victory. The following game against Wade High School saw Xavier dominate possession throughout the first half, but fail to apply scoreboard pressure. Wade lifted in the second half to record a close victory in slippery conditions. Xavier s last game against saw Kildare piled on 4 early goals to open up a match winning lead. Xavier played better in the second half, but the damage was done and Kildare ran out commanding 26 point winners. Xavier s better players on the day were Joel Roberson, Lachlan Tanner, Doulton Langlands, Jake Carter, Tom O Brien and Rohan Gates. Mark Sanson - U14 AFL Coach SENIOR GIRLS AFL - MURRAY BUSHRANGERS SHIELD The Senior Girls Aussie Rules football team participated in the Murray Bushrangers Shield competition at Sarvaas Park. They played exceptionally well in cold conditions, and motivated (unfortunately) by the injuries of team mates, the girls defeated Albury High, Trinity and St Paul s to make their way to the Semi Final. After an easy win, Xavier proceeded through to the Grand Final where, in a thrilling match, the girls were successful in defeating Murray High. Best on Ground for the Grand Final was Annie Bell and Best Player for the Day was Victoria Keogh.

104 102 AUSSIE RULES continued SENIOR GIRLS GIANTS CUP RIVERINA FINALS Our Senior Girls came up against some tough competition all day. Conditions weren t the best with rain to begin the day, and we surely drew the short straw with a huge mud pile in the centre of our oval which over the day extended to the majority of the field. The girls went down in their first match to a strong and well drilled Kildare. The damage was done early with 5 unanswered goals and lots of unmarked players. Girls improved for game two against Finley HS, with goals to Tahlia Carroll and Victoria Keogh coupled with strong defensive work from Annie Bell, but we ran out of time to seal the win. Our final game against St Francis started much the same way. Victoria Keogh displayed super skills in the centre and Georgie O Brien put a score on the board that saw us take the win by a goal. Thanks to Cathy Nyhan and Liz Keogh for travelling to Wagga and supporting the girls through very trying conditions. Well done to all girls on the day. It was a great achievement for the team to make it to this level. JUNIOR GIRLS AFL - MURRAY BUSHRANGERS SHIELD May saw nineteen young girls pull on their football shorts and Guernsey s in the near minus temperatures to take the field for the Junior Girls AFL day. The girls were co-coached by Fletcher Carroll and Ben Lloyd (Year 9) and played exceptionally well in every game. A great day was had by all those involved thoroughly enjoyed themselves. The first game was played against Corowa Xavier victorious by a convincing 22 points. The second and third games were a lot tighter, with goals on and after the siren to Nancy Musadi sealing wins against Trinity and Scots. Hayley Riley and Georgie Attree were strong in the ruck as were our midfielder s; Claire Mahoney, Grace Senior and Sharna Thomas. A one point win in the Semi-Final against Murray High School put us through to the Grand Final against a strong Billabong High School. Unfortunately we went down by 4 goals, but the girls played well and should be commended for their sportsmanship on the day. Helen Vardy and Bronwyn Lieschke Senior and Junior Girls AFL Coaches NSW CCC U15 AFL 2013 The first week of June, 2013 saw Ben Lloyd, Lachlan Gould, Fletcher Carroll, Harry Nunn, Jack Kirley, Brandon Thomas and Billie Robertson represent Xavier as a part of the Southern NSW Combined Catholic Colleges U15 Australian Rules Football team (the Blue Tongues). Their team competed in the NSW All Schools AFL Championships in Broken Hill against 9 other teams from around the state. The boys played well, helping their team to convincing victories in their first 3 preliminary games against the Western Wombats, Northern NSW Stallions and Riverina South West Tip Turkeys. This set up a final round game showdown with the NSW CIS Lions team that was closely contested, but the Lions ran out narrow winners and were eventually NSW All Schools champions (defeating Riverina Murray Greys in the final). The Blue Tongues convincingly defeated the Northern CCC Bullants in the playoff for third. At the completion of the carnival the NSW All Schools AFL team of 25 players was selected to compete at the National Championships in Darwin in August. Lachlan Gould, Fletcher Carroll and Jack Kirley were successful in making the NSW All Schools team, which is a great achievement and testament to their outstanding talents. Well done and congratulations to all the boys for their fine efforts throughout the carnival.

105 AUSSIE RULES continued Mark Sanson - NSW CCC Southern Coach NATIONALS U15 AFL 2013 Xavier was well represented at the All Schools AFL Carnival held during August in Darwin. Three students from Year 9, Lachie Gould, Fletcher Carroll and Jack Kirley made the NSW squad to compete against other states during the carnival. From all reports the boys conducted themselves superbly to finish fourth overall. Congratulations to the boys on their outstanding efforts in making this side and the success they have had as a result. Out of this carnival, Fletcher Carroll was successful in being selected in the All-Australian side to tour South Africa in early The following is an extract from the Border Mail s report Xavier High School s Fletcher Carroll has been selected in the All-Australian Under15 Schoolboys Team. The classy rover starred for NSW during the national championships in Darwin last week and was the only NSW player named in the line-up to tour South Africa early next year. NSW finished fourth after going down to Victoria Country by 29 points on Saturday. NSW coach Tim Sanson said yesterday Carroll had earned his spot in the national side. Fletcher played really well on the ball, Sanson said. He had a good week. We had five matches in seven days with the temperature over 30 degrees and all the NSW boys did well to get a good result for the state. Courtesy of The Border Mail Tuesday 20th August
