Whether it has been through our social justice events, fundraisers or simply helping someone with a personal need, t. rancis Catholic econdary chool stands out as a school community that cares to make a difference. We congratulate Mrs. Cronkwright who will be retiring after many years of teaching and ministering to the needs of students and Catholic chool communities. he will be especially missed in all that she has done for the t. rancis Community. We know that Mrs. Cronkwright will stay involved as part of the t. rancis amily and we wish her the best in the coming years. ur idewalk Chalk estival on Wednesday, June 1 st was again an extremely successful event with the involvement of over one hundred students and staff. Catharines, L2 47 (905) Phone (905) ax Many parents and friends attended the event and were treated to excellent art, music and drama. ur Boys occer team had an excellent season, winning and competing at, while our Girls occer team fell just short of winning and gaining entrance to competition. ur Rowing Club had an excellent year, placing third overall, at the Canadian econdary chool Rowing ssociation Championships, capturing 6 medals including 1 gold, 1 silver and 4 bronze. Recognition Day on riday, June 17 th highlighted the achievements, efforts and leadership of our t. rancis students. ome one hundred and fifty students were recognized for their contributions to the rts, thletics, cademics and a host of other areas. inally, would like to take this time to congratulate our graduates as they continue to pursue post-secondary education or the workplace, and pray that they continue to work with passion and deep faith in whatever comes their way. McCaffery, Chaplain ome wonderful highlights from the past few months: aster Mass was celebrated by ather Peter on hursday, May 6 th which was also part of our Catholic ducation Week celebrations. Catholic ducation Week was May 1-7. hroughout our school community during this week, our classes celebrated the theme Catholic ducation: Celebrating the pirit Prayers geared to the sub-themes -- the pirit of ospitality, the pirit of Understanding, the pirit of Wisdom, the pirit of Justice and the pirit of Gratitude, were offered each morning. ur choir provided music ministry and abina todulski served as reader for our Grade 7 Catholic ducation Week Mass at the Cathedral of t. Catherine of lexandria. ur celebrant was Msgr. Wayne Kirpatrick. aster Mass was on May 4 th and coincided with Buddy Day, as we welcomed grade 8 students from non-feeder schools. Grad Retreat was held at Balls alls on Wednesday, May 11 th. ur guest speaker was ndy hibodeau, a high energy presenter who always leaves a solid message planted in his audiences. We rejoiced in the (almost) warm, sunny day, and certainly a warm spirit filled the barn, as grads celebrated their faith and their friendships. CDB Grad Celebration was held at the new cotiabank Convention Centre in iagara alls on May 19 th. t was a great time in a great new venue and a wonderful opportunity for this group to welcome Bishop Bergie and to hear Geoff Greene, an eco-activist who challenged everyone to see our planet as a sacred trust. Closing Mass, with a focus on our grads, was celebrated on hursday, June 2 nd by ather Vickers. ur entire school population, as well as several parents, travelled to t. lfred Church to celebrate this Mass. t was wonderful to pray together as a community for our grads -- in thanksgiving -- for all they have given to our community, and for all their future goals. nd already we are moving into next year a very dedicated Pilgrimage Committee has already begun to meet, fuelled by the enthusiasm of Mrs. Drago and Mr. Leary! Council members have worked diligently to assist the school community in various activities including fundraising, early ew Uniform ale and graduation lunch and reception, to mention a few. hanks to all of you as these endeavors would not be possible without your dedication and commitment. ur next early ew Uniform ale is on Wednesday, June 29 th from 6:00 to 7:30 p.m. Graduates, and students who have outgrown their uniforms, are reminded that we would appreciate the donation of your used uniforms at the end of the school year. Please drop them off at the office. 4 Clubs & ctivities Girls Cheerleading Mrs. M. Mauro-Marshall and Ms. Weigert R C he girls represented the school this year by participating in special events such as the Christmas ssembly and the pecial eeds Christmas vent as well as different sporting events throughout the year. he girls brought in spirit, excitement and enthusiasm to all of the events that they participated in. he girls opened this year s Recognition Day, setting the tone for an eventful and fun-filled day. he Cheerleading eam includes Vanessa Meginnis, as Captain, Monika Palinkas as Co-captain and also includes, eather Mirynech, icole Kent, Krysten Roscoe, Jessica brams, hannon D rcey, risa Krasniqi, Bailey Paddy, Victoria Lalande, iara ummers, Meaghan Kovacs, Kayla yfe-maceil, Kelsey Belansky, Peggy Miller and Bridget adley. 5 Carpe Diem eize the Day! King s College Catholic tudent Leadership Conference 2011 Ms D. McCaffery, Chaplain or the first time, t. rancis students participated in this wonderful conference offered by King s College on May ighteen t. rancis students joined students from aint Michael, Denis Morris and Blessed rinity, travelling by coach bus to London and arriving at King s in time for supper. he evening continued with an interactive session with presenters from ree the Children followed by aize prayer and a movie night. he overnight stay in King s residences gave students a taste of what might be in their future as home away from home when they go to university themselves. he following day the crowd grew to include approximately 350 participants and was filled with activity as students participated in two workshop choices from approximately 15, which included topics such as ocial Justice, Me to We, motivational speakers and guided meditation. Chris D ouza was the keynote speaker who delivered a dynamic message which challenged students to be sensitive to the ways we engage or do not engage in behaviours and attitudes which reflect a true understanding of equity and diversity. he experience was rounded out with a wonderful barbecue lunch before travelling home. King s College truly has a gift for hospitality and vibrant engagement of students in so many ways. Girls and Boys basketball teams put on a rivia ight to raise funds for their ournament next December at Disneyworld in rlando lorida. hanks to the generosity of parents, staff, and our local business community, we were able to raise over $4,000.00! hanks to all who supported this event. 6 R C tudent Council ews Mrs. M. Wall t. rancis rocks! he second half of the school year has been a busy one for tudent Council. fter our second dance in ebruary, tudent Council served up pancakes for the entire school on Pancake uesday. hat s over 1700 pancakes! fter the March Break, 2 tudent Council members, Laura illingham and Jessica Moloney, attended the first annual ntario Catholic tudent Leadership Conference. his conference was the first of its kind and was hosted by the iagara Catholic District chool Board. More than 300 Catholic students from all over ntario met for leadership activities, prayer and fun. ext year, another two of our students will travel to ttawa for the Conference. During the Lenten eason, we gathered to create aster baskets for the children of Gillian s Place. his is our third year partnering with Gillian s Place and we plan to make it a t. rancis tradition. n addition, continuing with our community spirit, tudent Council led t. rancis students in a competition with den igh chool in May to see which school could bring in the most canned goods and food items for Community Care. ive large collection bins were placed in the front foyer and our student body filled all 5 of them! We collected over 680 food items and donated 300 dollars to this worthy cause. Great work t. rancis! ur nnual Recognition Day was held on June 10 th where students were recognized for their many contributions to the school community. he weather was terrific as teachers and students were served up a barbeque lunch, followed by outside games. ur fourth nnual Dodgeball ournament was won by a new team this year as he Blasters beat the hree Peat seniors. n addition, we ran our first ever Phoenix ear actor where 13 teams competed in elimination events to determine a winner. he winning team was the senior, all girls, M. hank You to all the teams who participated with such spirit! n May, tudent Council also held elections for next years Council and we had a record number of names on the nomination ballot. We look forward to a great summer and will see everyone at the end of ugust for the Grade 9 Welcome Breakfast! P3 Program Continued to upport tudents Mrs. M. auber hroughout this past school year, the P3 program, providing after school support to students, was once again a huge success. P3 ran in the library on uesdays, Wednesdays and hursdays from 2:30 to 3:30 with teachers present to supervise and help students. enior students acted as tutors for junior students needing help in Math, cience, nglish, rench, and Religion. Many thanks to our tutors for their dedication and help! his support often made the difference in students achieving their credits. We also need to send out a UG thank you to the pecial ducation Class, who was unfailing in their commitment to bake muffins for us every day. tudents really appreciated their snack and we all appreciate the love and care that went into the baking! 8 Mathletes Mrs.. Cheng R C his team competed in two Mathletes tournaments during the month of May. What a wonderful rt ttack we had on that sunny first day of June. rt students worked hard creating their beautiful masterpieces during the school day, while our festival was held later that day from 6-8 p.m. Guests experienced a culture filled evening, perusing the chalk masterpieces on the ground in the back parking lot. hey also enjoyed listening to live musical entertainment from our Jazz and teel Drum Bands on the open stage at the back patio, while enjoying delicious baked goods and coffee from the rt Café. Guests were provided with row seating and Café tables located on our lovely green space on the back field, which added to the enjoyment of the evening. urther entertainment was provided by our Phoenix Mascot, Mimes from our Drama Class, abina, our juggling unicycler, and some former t. rancis Graduates who created caricature portraits. n all, $ was raised for our Pilgrimage effort! special thanks goes out to the generous staff, students and rt Club Members who provided the baked goods at the Café, and pitched in with some last minute duties. pecial mention is also extended to Kayla Dardarian and Ms mma Druce, who both embodied great commitment and leadership to this event. n a personal note, Ms Lambert would like to express the joy of returning to our original objective -- advocating the arts within our community. his event possessed a strong art component, a cultural festival atmosphere, while ensuring an economically friendly charity. he rts are truly alive and well here at t. rancis! 10 Varsity Girls occer Mrs.. Lucchetta and Mrs. G. 'Leary Co-curricular ews R C Congratulations to the t. rancis Varsity Girls occer eam on a successful season. he team exhibited hard work and great team co-operation that resulted in an unbeaten regular season record of 5-0. he girls played numerous games under tough conditions of rain and mud, but they remained positive and determined throughout each game they played. he girls convincingly defeated Governor imcoe in the semi-finals to face a tough oly Cross squad in the Zone inals. fter a challenging start and trailing at the half, the girls improved their efforts in the second half and finished strong, but unfortunately a little short, losing to oly Cross. he team should be very proud of their accomplishments this season. lthough we say goodbye to two leading seniors, my lderson and ara D loisio, coaches Mrs. Lucchetta and Mrs. Leary look forward to an exciting season next year with the fantastic and talented girls remaining. hank you for another outstanding and memorable season ladies! Girls oftball Ms J. rendo and Ms. Weigert n excellent season was had by the Girls oftball eam despite the horrible weather we endured. he girls attended two tournaments, the Zone Championship and the Westpark nvitational. n both tournaments they finished a strong third place out of 16 teams. t is the best showing by the t. rancis Girls oftball eam in several years. he girls had fun and were intense competitors. he team included Captains Kate Cunningham and Melissa Lostrocco. Janet oster, atalie roats, Rachel Locking, Leanne Collison, Meagan awatsky, oanna l-kayed, aylor neek, lexa Plato, Carissa Richardson, am Brothers, Bailey taynes, and Chelsea VanKekem, made up the rest of the team. ngelle Ruiter did a great job as the team Manager. Many girls had an opportunity to play many different positions and were led by Kate Cunningham at pitch and Melissa Lostrocco at shortstop. big thank-you goes out to mma Druce and llison arding for their help with the team. hanks for a great season ladies, hope to see you out next year. 11 Boys occer Mr. M. DiPietro he boy s soccer team ended a very successful season last week at the Championships in Windsor on June 3 rd. he boys first defeated Collegiate in the semi-finals in one of the most exciting soccer games ever played at t rancis! railing 3-1 at half time, and short one player, the boys fought hard and scored three short handed goals and defeated Collegiate 4-3 in overtime. rom there, the boys faced oly Cross in the Zone inal. With the team leading 1-0, oly Cross scored a goal with 20 minutes left in regulation time, to tie the game. nce again, the entire team worked hard and scored two goals in the last 12 minutes to capture their first Zone title in 6 years, defeating oly Cross 3-1. he next challenge was at the competition where the team faced a very difficult amilton Christian igh chool. railing 1 0 at half time, we scored two goals to go ahead 2-1. amilton Christian tied the game at 2, with 15 minutes to go, and the team came back for the third time in seven days by scoring another goal, and defeating amilton 3-2. he inal was not as dramatic with the boys capturing our first Boys occer Championship in 6 years, by defeating Ridgway-Crystal Beach 6-0. s a result, we travelled to Windsor to participate in the Boys Championships. he team was the number 1 seed at the ournament, but quickly realized that they were in for a very competitive environment. hey defeated Richview igh school from tobicoke, 2-1. hen they were defeated by Prince dward igh chool 1-0, and then suffered another setback by losing to t. Michaels 1-0. With a chance to advance still possible, the team needed to defeat oly rinity secondary and did just that by defeating them 2-1. owever, even with the 2 victories, the boys ended pool play in 3rd place and did not advance to the next round. Mr. DiPietro, Mr. Dengelis and Mr. Bufalino would like to congratulate the entire team for their dedication and hard work all season. hey were a pleasure to coach and it was an honour to be part of such an experience. We wish nothing but the best for the boys who are graduating and hope that those returning will work just as hard as they did this year to try to continue the success that was achieved. Boys Varsity Lacrosse -- by ran Bonomi Mr. D. Macoretta and Mr. K. Dion G. RC! he Varsity Boys Lacrosse eam had a very successful season, finishing undefeated in season play. hey travelled to oly Cross, imcoe and Collegiate for jamborees and came out on top! fter tremendous efforts and achievement, the team advanced to Zone at oly Cross. he team defeated West Park in the semi-finals, but lost in a well fought and muddy battle to a tough oly Cross team. utstanding team effort was seen throughout the season and congratulations to the boys on an awesome season! eam members included: Doug Buchan, Jake Dion, Charlie heehan, Jimmy heehan, Josh Kozielski, Dan D lario, Johnny D lario, Jeff Mestek, Liam Geddes, Kyle elice, Jason Barron, Cree Blakely, lan lorez, Broderick Kelly, Jarrod Peacock, Luke Doppelhofer, ick Conlon, Corey ntongiovanni, Keith Wedderspoon and Brock Gilmore. Cukierski he 2011 Varsity Boys Baseball eam was a well-mannered and talented group of young men. ven though the baseball season is abbreviated, especially this year, the level of commitment and subsequent success, was mostly consistent throughout the season. Combined with games from the Bullet ournament, our boys played to a 3-3 record. he playoffs were essentially nonexistent due to the excessive rain this spring. trong play this season was conveyed by Michael Gacnick, ndrew Kretz, Mike Dupuis and icholas padafora. Rookie pitcher van Lukasik also played well, pitching with a great deal of confidence. Considering that there are a number of young players for next year, the future of Varsity Boys Baseball looks quite good at t. rancis. special farewell goes out to the graduates who are going out into a different field. Mr. Cukierski, the team administrator, would especially like to thank ead Coach, Mr. rank ker, who continues to lend his time and talents to our schools' baseball program.. RC RWG Ken andham, ead Coach What a rowing season! We had twenty entries in the CR Championships and ten in the finals, as well as another four crews very close to making the finals. Congratulations is extended to our six medal winning crews. his year the Junior Womens Program walked away with three medals a Gold medal in a hard fought battle from behind in the Jr 59kg 8+. his was the very first t. rancis crew to ever win GLD at the CR Championships! Congratulations to the winning crew - mily Mcntosh, lexa Plato, ydney Masonovich, lex reitas, Kara Balsdon, Marissa teinberg, aylor Morris, eather Mirynech and coxie, lessandra Peters; coached by Kevin Koch. Bronze medals were awarded to the Jr 59kg 4+ (mily Mcntosh, Marissa teinberg, aylor Morris, eather Mirynech and coxie, lessandra Peters) and to the Jr 4+ (Val Burtnik, Rachel chenck, ancy Kessler, lana erguson and coxie, Perri Champion). he enior Girls Program won ilver and a Bronze medal. he 59kg 4+ showed their heart and soul, rowing to the ilver medal. Congratulations to Caroline Weller, mily Cornelius, Maddie McGowan, Katie ero and coxie, Carissa Richardson. he enior 4+ rowed in a tough race and won the Bronze medal. Congratulations to Janine Payne, arah lattery, licia Marconi, Kal Rozman and coxie, arah Kent. he Junior Boys Program completed the medal haul with a strong finish earning a Bronze medal in the 72kg 4+. Congratulations to lessandro Portanova, Reid Vassallo, dam Vassallo, David Mirynech and coxie, Reilly mith. his same crew, later in the day, came 4 th in the 66kg 4+. he enior Boys did not win a medal this season at the CR; however, their best result was a 4 th place in the Men s 4x. We had twenty athletes who participated in the totesbury Cup Regatta in Philadelphia this year. our crews qualified to attend this large high school Regatta. ur enior Mens 4x lead the way winning a Bronze medal. 13 who raced in the Jr 4+ category, placed 5th from a field of 58 entries. he enior Womens 4+ placed 8th overall, out of 54 entries, and the enior Lightweight Womens 4+ placed 8th overall, out of 51 entries. Lawrence Market and CityV/ M elevision, as well as exploring the many multi-cultural areas of oronto, served to reinforce how important it is to know and to use other languages in areas besides the classroom. t. rancis rench/talian/panish students participated in the iagara Catholic District chool Board's 12 th nnual rench/talian/ panish Public peaking Contest at Club Roma. ur students were competing against students from all of the igh chools within our board. Congratulations goes to all of the students who participated. he Brock/iagara rench Contest was held in May at Brock University. ur students practiced their rench skills, in both oral and written communication, against students from other schools in the iagara Region. Congratulations to all of our participants for being our rench Language mbassadors. tudents were given another opportunity on May 29 th to experience the importance of languages at the 12 th nnual Brock talian Day Competition. t. rancis was once again very well represented. /nternational Languages are alive and thriving at t. rancis igh chool. ur students, as well as other students within the Board, traveled to taly for two weeks in March to explore the beautiful cities of Venice, Padova, lorence, Pisa, ssisi, iena, Vinci and Rome. hey also earned a Grade 11 rt credit in the DC 30 Course through Continuing ducation. We will be having a parent information meeting about the course for March 2012, on June 16, 2011 at 6:00 p.m., so please listen to the announcements, or please call Mme.
