Our student Leadership Program is modelled on Servant Leadership underpinned by the model of Jesus as servant. Our student leaders commit to serving and strengthening the school community by living their faith in Christ and leading actions of connection, as together they strive to transform our world. So it is with great pride that I announced the School Leaders for These students were nominated by their peers and staff, and last week were interviewed by myself and senior staff members. Below are some of the statements about leadership that our new student leaders made during the leadership interviews. I feel very privileged and would like to make a difference I enjoy setting a positive example I want to give back to the school community and create a positive learning environment Leading at Corpus means to be a servant leader, that is to serve before leading and put others first I appreciate all the opportunities I have had at Corpus Christi and I want to give something back to the community. I want to build on the legacy of the past Year 12 Leaders and make 2017 ta successful year. The cheers and nods of approval when the names were announced to Year 11 and the school staff demonstrates the support that our new leaders have from the Year 11 students and our staff. While leadership brings prestige but also responsibility and commitment, but I have confidence that each student elected recognises the importance of their role and the legacy that they can provide to our school community. 3 P A G E 3 T E R M 3 W E E K 6 P A G E 3 From the Principal Indigenous Education This week I attended a Community Engagement session at Ss Peter and Pauls Primary School with Mrs Val West our school s Aboriginal Education Officer to discuss the great range of Indigenous education initiatives that have been implemented this year at Corpus. These programs extend from classroom support and tutorials, to cultural awareness programs, and programs to nurture and raise the aspirations of our Indigenous students. This year a number of our students have had the opportunity to be involved in AIME which is an educational program that is focused on providing Indigenous students with the skills, opportunities, belief and confidence to grow and succeed through high school, and into further education, employment or university. A number of guest speakers have also provided our students with workshops in self-esteem, identity and cultural awareness. In addition students have produced a beautiful collection of prints that have been framed and placed on permanent display in Davis House. Two of the prints displayed in Davis House I would like to acknowledge and thank Mrs Val West for her great work and commitment to our students and also acknowledge and thank Mr Dom Ferrante and Mrs Lynda Timpano for their continued support of these programs. 4 P A G E 4 T E R M 3 W E E K 6 P A G E 4 What s Happening at Corpus World Youth Day 2016 From July 18 August 6 I travelled with a group of Pilgrims from Wollongong, Armidale, Cairns and Toowoomba to World Youth Day in Poland. They were a great group of people and I feel privileged to have been a part of the experience. There are many stories to tell, however I will try and condense for the purpose of this newsletter. We followed in the footsteps of St John Paul II and Saint Faustina - the patron saints of WYD- as well as visited many historical sites we investigate in the classroom. In Warsaw we toured the Old Town and visited the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising Museum. We spent a quiet and reflective afternoon on the way to Krakow at Auschwitz concentration camp and visited Schindler s Factory. We travelled to John Paul II s home town of Wadowice and saw where he was born, where he lived and where he was baptised. We spent time at the Shrine of Devine Mercy where St Faustina lived and died. We celebrated Mass each day in a different beautiful location. We also celebrated Bishop Ingham s 15 th year as Bishop of our diocese whilst we were in Krakow. The theme of WYD was Blessed are the merciful for they shall obtain mercy (Mt 5:7) and we attended many catechises on mercy. The message is we should show mercy to God, to each other and importantly ourselves. An interesting example explored was John Paul II giving mercy to his attempted assassinator in To attend the Saturday night vigil with Pope Francis we walked for 21kms with 1.5 million other pilgrims from all over the world to camp. It was hot and our bags were heavy, but the spirit was very much alive. It was an amazing experience. Pope Francis message to the youth was to make their mark in the world not to be a couch potato and play video games all day, but to engage in the world, not to let others decide their future to fight for their future. Dear young people, we didn't come into this world to 'vegetate,' to take it easy, to make our lives a comfortable sofa to fall asleep on. No, we came for another reason: To leave a mark, Pope Francis The school gift was purchased at the Jasna Góra Monastery in Częstochowa. The monastery is home of the Lady of Częstochowa, also known as the Black Madonna. The gift is a portrait of the Black Madonna and has been blessed. The medieval original has two visible scars on her face, from robbers and is presented wearing different robes. Pope Francis announced the next World Youth Day in Panama in Ms Erin Werakso Leader of HSIE

We passed a motion to continue our support for the Little Lights Playgroup that was established last year. The Parents and Friends will donate $ to this wonderful program. In previous years the Parents and Friends has contributed towards furnishings for the prayer space and it was also agreed to support the construction of a new Creedence table to match the existing altar. This will be commissioned by the same carpenter. Assistant Secretary: Lyne Herrmann Treasurer: Marieanne Smith We were also made aware of the installation of the new multipurpose football posts which look great and will be used for many years to come. Once again, these were funded using Parents and Friends levies. Assistant Treasurer: Diane Lawler Diocesan Delegate: Michelle Lashbrook The next meeting will be held on Wednesday 14 September at 7.30pm in the LRC all welcome. Mr Paul Cudina President, Parents and Friends What s Happening at Corpus Little Lights Playgroup Thank you from Little Lights Playgroup! 7 P A G E 7 T E R M 3 W E E K 6 P A G E 7 Mission Spark Retreat Two weeks ago students from Corpus and St Joseph s gathered at Corpus for the 2nd Spark Twilight Retreat. Run by the Youth Mission Team, over fifty students joined together for a fun night of games, songs, dance and reflection. Part of a joint initiative with the two schools and the Youth mission Team, the night aims to provide a safe place for youth to gather and explore issues relevant to their lives, whilst also ensuring a great time. Religious Literacy Assessment (RLA) On Monday and Tuesday our Year Eight students sat the Diocesan Religious Literacy Assessment (RLA) Part A. The RLA provides an opportunity to gather information regarding student knowledge, understanding and value of the Christian tradition. Students participated in a boot camp last week in order to prepare themselves for the assessment. Part B of the assessment has been undertaken over the course of this term and allows students to utilise their creativity in presenting a work on the mission of the Church throughout time. Students and their Learning Advisors have been working on these during sessions and from early reports there are some outstanding pieces of work. Mr Aaron McDonald Leader of Religious Education
8 P A G E 8 T E R M 3 W E E K 6 P A G E 8 Mission Brekkie with the Bishop On Thursday 18 August, the Student Leadership Team attended the Brekkie with the Bishop at Holy Spirit College, Bellambi. The Diocese of Wollongong extended this invitation to the Year 12 Student Leaders in each of our Diocesan secondary schools, to provide these young people with an opportunity to actively engage in dialogue with our Bishop as they approach the last weeks of their Catholic education and HSC journey. Given that Year 12 Student Leaders are currently in this post-trial exam period, this interaction and conversation with each other provided an encouraging and renewing experience to reflect on their leadership within their schools, as well as the leaders they aspire to be upon their graduation. The Bishop s address was incredibly inspiring and highlighted the importance of holding on to the values they have been instilled with so that their own lives and the lives of those they come into contact with will be hope-filled. I would like to congratulate our Student Leadership Team: Kristin Ciccone, Jarrod Rickard, Rachel Murray, Elijah Crowe, Matthew Cornell, Brooke Brady, Shannon O Neil, Jason Ralston, Connor Larkin, Meg Graham, Molly Evans and Harry O Neil for their wonderful representation of their Year 12 cohort at this event and throughout their leadership of the school.
9 P A G E 9 T E R M 3 W E E K 6 P A G E 9 Social Justice Corpus Has Talent- Picton Floods Fundraiser The Social Justice Committee will be hosting the much anticipated Corpus Has Talent concert on Wednesday 31 August at lunchtime, to raise money for the flood damage to St Anthony s Catholic Primary School in Picton. As you may be aware, the wild storm weather earlier this year caused significant damage to a number of houses, local business and schools, which are still in the process of being repaired or rebuilt. St Anthony s Catholic Primary School is still currently closed due to severe flood damage, as over a metre of floodwater passed through their classrooms destroying furniture and teaching resources. In the interim, Kindergarten to Year 2 students are currently attending school at Our Lady Help of Christian School, whilst Year 3 to 6 students are attending school John Therry Catholic High School. To support St Anthony s in the recovery process, the Social Justice Committee will be donating all funds raised from the concert as well as the soft drink store to assist in the purchasing of new resources and equipment. Staff and students are encouraged to bring in a gold coin donation to cover their entry to the concert, as well as a couple of dollars to purchase a soft drink. We look forward to watching the very talented staff and student performances and helping out one of our Diocesan schools in this time of need. R U Ok? Day R U Ok? Day is a national day of action set up to encourage people to regularly and meaningfully ask Are you ok?, which is a simple, yet powerful way to let someone know that you care. There are many people in our society who are struggling with financial pressures, grief and loss, and other personal or family circumstances, which are difficult to overcome without a strong support system. That s why it is so important for us to look out for one another so that no one has to face such hardships alone. The Social Justice Committee have been busily preparing for Corpus Christi s celebration of R U OK? Day on Tuesday 6 September. These students have given up a number of lunch times to make yellow ribbons for all staff and students in our community and have also put together a meaningful liturgy and reflection for Houses on the day. I would like to thank the members of the Social Justice Committee as well as the Student Leadership Team for all their time and efforts to make this event so special for our school community. We also look forward to watching the Staff vs Student Oz Tag competition at lunchtime at lunchtime. We hope to see everyone on Grass 2 supporting the playoff! Ms Maria Ioannou Leader of Social Justice
