Dean of the University, David Green and Halesowen College Principal Keith Bate presented the award to the school which was received by student Jacob Bannister and his parents at an awards ceremony held at the college. The award recognises the quality of our Gifted and talented access programme which includes: university visits, taster sessions, master classes and competitions. Students attending these additional opportunities are given insights into student life and the world of academia and are therefore better placed to make choices later in life. This programme links closely to our careers programme which operates through Learn 2 Live and aims to give realistic experiences and information to our students about future pathways. Karl Haines, Associate Senior Leader, has worked hard to develop the programme which also includes after school sessions covering diverse subjects such as: classical music, public speaking, etiquette, Latin, important paintings and the impact of poetry. Students can also follow the Imagine programme which helps our students to gain the extended project qualification which gives additional UCAS points for university applications. The school was delighted to be recognised for this work and it fits in well with our ambition to ASPIRE AND ACHIEVE!

3 YEAR 10 PARENTS In Learn 2 Live, Year 10 students are currently beginning the process of considering their options for when they leave Leasowes next year. All Leasowes students will be using UCAS Progress for their applications to college and/or further learning. UCAS Progress is an online one stop shop for applications where students can search, apply, and add their personal profile to the website. Leasowes will also add predicted grades and a written reference for every student at the end of October before applications are sent. This term students are being encouraged to begin to compile their own personal profile over the next few months with a view to making their applications in November. The great advantage of using UCAS Progress is that students will only have to fill in their details once before applying to as many colleges and/or places of continued learning as they wish. Leasowes will be running a Careers and Further Learning Event for students in September and parents and students are strongly encouraged to visit college open days. These generally occur in October and November. When students have decided upon suitable courses/colleges their applications can be forwarded via UCAS Progress once Leasowes staff have checked that everything is complete. Parents/carers are asked to support students throughout this process. All local colleges allow applications via UCAS Progress. Please do not be pressured by colleges to apply early through their websites or on their open days. UCAS Progress is a very efficient tool which, once completed, allows students to easily check the progress of their applications. UCAS Progress goes live each year on October 1 st with up to date details on courses for Students will continue to receive support from the school through Learn 2 Live, Form Tutors, Pastoral Staff and myself throughout the entire process. Colin Hodcroft Head of Careers Guidance ASSESSMENT INFORMATION EVENING TUESDAY 14 th JULY Dear Parents / Carers You are invited to an assessment information evening which is designed to follow up the new information on our website about changes to the ways in which students work will be assessed and marked from September These changes are in response the DFE s decision to abolish levels and to adopt a 1 9 GCSE grading system. Parents / carers with children currently in Years 7 and 8 should enter the theatre through the side door for a 6.00 pm start. The session should last approximately 40 minutes. Parents / carers with children currently in Years 9 and 10 should attend the session which begins at 7.00 pm in the theatre.

4 Year 10 Sandwell College Taster Day for Leasowes students! On Thursday 11 th June, 73 students and 5 members of staff attended the above event There were 200 students there that day from approximately 6 different schools so Leasowes provided over a third of the event and we had to take a minibus on top of a coach to get there as it was so popular. Students registered as normal and they were split into 3 separate groups ready for the tours. They wore their uniform and looked fantastic and students and staff had stickers and ID badges. When we arrived the staff and students were greeted by the helpful college staff, given a chaperone and escorted to the first of four different teaching rooms through the beautiful new college building. The subjects visited were Hair & Beauty, Construction, Fashion & Design, Computing, Health & Social Care, Sport and Childcare by the different groups to try and give them a variety of subjects to sample. It was a busy day moving area to area and at lunch students were provided with sandwiches, fruit and a drink. There was even several PS3 s and televisions set up for students to play on which entertained some more than others! After several more afternoon classes the students congregated and collected their own hand made Fashion & Design t-shirts and had one or two other goodies to take home and a group photo was taken. Leasowes students Dominic Macgowan (10S2) and Ellesse Brecknell (10K1) also won some Amazon vouchers (Dominic won 10 for being the fastest to construct and deconstruct a lock in Construction and Ellesse -won 20 for entering the general college competition). Mr Burns who organised the trip and the staff who volunteered to help on the day Miss Hulse, Miss Pearson, Miss Kaur, Mr Gutteridge and Miss Turner were very impressed at the students overall attitude and interest and the visit has hopefully gave them some ideas for the future. Students said the following comments The college staff were really helpful, Glad I came and The Fashion & Design was designing our own graffiti tags and the Sport was about injury and rehabilitation which was not what I expected which was good.

5 Pierced Ears Could we please remind students that earrings are not allowed to be worn in PE or taped over for safety reasons. With this in mind if students are having their ears pierced it would be best to have it done at the start of the summer holidays so that they can be safely taken out in September. LEASOWES ATHLETICS RESULTS Leasowes entered year 7, 8 and 9 teams into the Dudley Schools Athletics event. All teams did well with every girls and boys team being placed in the top 8 in the borough out of 20 secondary schools. The year 8 boys team did particularly well coming 5 th out of 20 teams. Well done to all 60 competitors for taking part. The students listed below were placed in at least the top 8 for their event out of 20. If you are using the lockers in the PE area please make sure that they are emptied at the end of each day. We are trying to make the system workable for everyone and students are not allowed to keep their bags and equipment in the lockers overnight for health and safety reasons. We have gone to a great deal of expense to install the locks so please use it fairly so that everyone can benefit. Padlocks for the lockers in the PE area are available to buy for 3 from the PE office. Each padlock comes with 2 keys. Any lockers that have not been emptied will unfortunately have to have locks forcibly removed at the end of the school day on Friday 17 th July.

7 OWEN S MOTOCROSS TRIUMPH Owen Taylor 7S2, races motocross He is a member of Warley Wasps motocross club and rides an 85cc small wheel Husqvarna. Owen competed at Pattingham race track Sunday 28th June, an event organised by WEM motocross club. In race 1 Owen didn't get a very good start and was one of the last riders to get out of the gate. He battled his way through the pack of riders and finished 2nd. Race 2 was a much better start and also resulted in a 2nd place finish. Race 3 was the best race of the day when Owen led from start to finish and resulted in an overall win on the day. Although Owen has won races before this was his first ever overall win in the 85cc class since moving from the 65cc class six months ago. Owen is currently competing in the Bridgestone Clubman series and sitting 12th in the championship. he is due to take part in round 5 at Fatcat motopark in Doncaster 4th & 5th July where he is hoping for a top 10 result.

8 French Students visit Leasowes Head girl, Frances Collins wrote: On Wednesday 17 th June, 49 French students came to visit Leasowes. They study English at their school Collège La Rôche aux Fées near Rennes in the northwest of France, so it was interesting for them to see England, visit a high school and meet English students. The students at Leasowes who study GCSE French had a pen pal and have been exchanging letters with their pen pal over the last few months. The French students did many different activities which included having a tour of the school, playing rounders with Year 9 and writing a bi-lingual speech about food or their local area with their English partners and presenting it in both English and French to their classmates. They even experienced a samosa and traditional fish and chips for the first time. Overall, it was a great day and it gave both Leasowes students and the French students an unforgettable experience which allowed both to have a look into one another s culture and lifestyle.
