Dear Parents of Sekolah Tenby, Welcome back to the new academic year in A new year represents a fresh start. We hope you have all had a lovely end of term holiday in December. I am looking forward to getting to know your children and you over in this new term especially during Parents Forums and Parents Evenings. We welcome your constructive feedback to develop Sekolah Tenby to be a better educational institution, so if you have any thoughts or ideas, please let us know. PT Results On 17 th November 2016, we celebrated the UPSR results that we are ranked No.2 in the Northern Kinta district (out of 112 schools) with GPA of Here I would like to take this opportunity to share Sekolah Tenby s PT3 results that was released on 19 th December was the third year that students in Form 3 sat for PT3 examination. There were a total of 24 students from Form 3 who sat for PT3. Seven subjects obtained 100% pass rate - English Language, Geography, History, Life Skills, Malay Language, Pendidikan Islam and Science. Results show that there is an improvement in the GPA of 2.33 compared to 2.48 in 2015 and 2.81 in Year GPA (Note: The GPA operates on a decreasing scale where a lower index value indicates better candidate achievement) Congratulations to the following students: Brendan Lee Yee Hao Muhamad Aryan Khuzairi Celiane Lee Jia Wen Izzati Taqiah binti Shahril Affendi Reshma Nachiappan Kelvin Cheong Rabiatul Adawiyah binti Ahmad 7A 6A 5A 5A 4A 4A 4A Focus for this year Our focus this year will be in line with the School s Mission Point 1 To enable students to achieve their full potential for academic excellence and achievements in sports and arts as well as promote better integration amongst the school community. The Leadership Team will be reviewing assessment and putting into place a revised, more rigorous system for tracking (half-termly tracking) to aid with raising student achievement. With this, the reporting and tracking system will be revised and we will keep you informed of these updates. Teachers teach their students to learn all they can so they have options in life. One's potential is not set in stone at birth but it has to develop and change with increased knowledge and understanding. The role of teachers in Sekolah Tenby is to help students in the process of this discovery, and we do expect teachers to set an

example. We have shared the story of Who Moved My Cheese? by Spencer Johnson with all Sekolah Tenby teachers during the staff meeting on the 30 th December When the situation changes, this story explains how these characters react to the situation differently. That s the same principles we should adopt in our life to deal with change. How does this story fit into the world of education particularly in Sekolah Tenby? Change happens with technology leading the way in the 21st century, teachers must realise that their teaching methods must keep up as well. Gone are the days of looking information up in a hardbound encyclopaedia. Teachers must keep up with new ways to present information, make assignments meaningful, evaluate for real learning, and use data in their decision making. Teachers should look at change as an opportunity for growth and learning. Revised KSSR and KSSM curriculum The Malaysian Education Blueprint maps out the roadmap to build and efficient education system that features universal access all the way through to secondary education. All primary and secondary schools nationwide in 2017 will come under the newly revised curricula Kurikulum Standard Sekolah Rendah (KSSR) and Kurikulum Standard Sekolah Menengah (KSSM). Teachers in Sekolah Tenby were undergoing training courses on KSSR and KSSM by the Ministry of Education in Parents who attended the Standard 6 Transition Day on the 23 rd November 2016 were given a briefing regarding the revised curriculum. The curriculum will stress on student-centered and differentiated teaching, but it will have a greater emphasis on problem-based and project-based work. Students in Standard 1 and Form 1 are to learn an additional language starting with Chinese and students will have to participate in community service under Islamic Education and Moral Education. In Sekolah Tenby Ipoh, all students in Standard 2 to Standard 6 will have the opportunity to learn Chinese language according to their levels advanced or beginner level. Recommended textbooks for Chinese Language for advanced students will be specified by the subject teachers during the first week of school and this information will be pasted onto the students planners. Dual Language Programme (DLP) Sekolah Tenby has been given the approval to teach Mathematics and Science in English under the Dual Language Programme (DLP) at three entry points (Standard 1, Standard 4 and Form 1) from 2016 onwards. We are the only private school in Perak to be given this approval. Only 300 schools across Malaysia have been selected to participate in the programme. The DLP at Sekolah Tenby will be rolled out in 2017 according to the schedule below:

Besides strengthening the English Language, we want to emphasise that Sekolah Tenby plays the role of upholding and developing the Malay language. The importance of Malay Language as the country s official language is indisputable and the strongest unifying factor irrespective of race or religion, therefore all students need to learn and master the use of the Malay language properly. The first day in school at TEYCI started off with happy faces of children coming back to school. We have opened another Toddler class (Toddler M). Most of the new children have adapted well to their new environment and their teachers very quickly. Upon settling the children in, the parents were ushered to the hall for an orientation session which gave them a good understanding of the child s learning journey at Tenby. The children will now embark on the new theme in IPC for this term. 13 Maths Challenge #010 Number and Place Value Dear Parents/Guardians, Book Exchange Corner The Primary Student Council would like to set up a Book Exchange Corner to encourage the love for reading. Children will be able to take out a book to read during break times or bring it home. All we ask is that books taken out to be returned to the shelves when they have finished reading so that other children can have the opportunity to enjoy the book as well. This is how you can help us. We are looking for pre-loved books or comics that are age-appropriate for Primary children. If you have any books or comics suitable for us, please drop them at the Primary Office. Thank you very much for your help. The Primary Student Council

Sixth Formers Bring X Mas Cheer to Orang Asli Village Kampung Pawong is one of a cluster of Orang Asli villages along the Simpang Pulai- Tanah Rata Road which leads to the Cameron Highlands. This is where our Christmas Charity convoy of six 6 th Formers and three Tenby teachers arrived on the morning of 4 th December (L-R) Manpreet,Stephanie, Emi, Marcus, Chan Hon and Ridzuan

Our team reached this village in a procession of three cars carrying the provisions donated by our entire Tenby schools community. It was the culmination of our three-month-long charity drive within the school to show our care and concern for the aboriginal villagers. Manpreet speaks to the Orang Asli villagers. Led by Sixth Form Council president-designate, Manpreet Kaur our team comprised Muhammad Ridzuan Mat Som (Vice President SFC), Stephanie Cheah (Secretary), Marcus Yap,Emi Yamamoto and Chan Hon. Together with them were Mr Louis, Mr Harry and Mr Alex Chuah. Marcus and Ridzuan impress the village girls!

The villagers were all gathered in a small pre-school centre where we were welcomed by the village headman, Encik Ismail (popularly known as Pak Mail) who briefed us on the social and economic status of the Orang Asli in the villages on the Cameron Highlands route. Pak Ismail on the greatest challenge facing the Orang Asli Our greatest challenge, he declared is to chart a clear course for the future. Our young people are at the crossroads. Should they go forward into full scale modernization or should we be more concerned about preserving our traditional way of life? We were there that day to think about how we at Tenby Schools Ipoh could help the Orang Asli make that important decision for themselves. Our target group were the young ones, right from the preschoolers to those in secondary school.

We are in the throes of a our fact-finding mission. We hope to help the young orang asli through educational support, counseling and peer interaction with them commented Muhammad Ridzuan.

That morning, our sixth formers had a fun time with the children playing games with them on the village road. Despite being surrounded by the Malayan jungle, it is an irony that the young villagers had no space for open play such as on a field remarked Chan Hon. There were several learning outcomes which we drew from this fellowship visit. There are more than 700 people in this village.they are all of the Semai tribe. They have adequate basic facilities such as concrete homes, piped water supply and electricity. The JOA (Orang Asli Department) arranges for visits by medical teams from time to time but the nearest medical centre is 18 kilometres away in Simpang Pulai. The nearest primary school lies about 18 kilometres away while the nearest secondary school lies another 18 kilometres away on the opposite direction. The school where hostel facilities are available lies some 50 kilometres away in Hulu Kinta. Many young people face a dilemma after completing their SPM. Should they go further away from the village or should they remain within the Orang Asli tribal areas? Our Sixth Formers plan to strengthen our bonds with the Orang Asli children in these kampungs in order to help them along in the journey of life. We hope to do this in the following ways: Organising motivational sessions for the Orang Asli youth Donating educational materials for their preschool centres Engaging with OPEN UNIVERSITY MALAYSIA to promote further/higher education for qualified Orang Asli children. Sponsoring educational support for selected Orang Asli children Submitted by: Manpreet Kaur & Stephanie Cheah (Year 12S)

Farewell Speech at Graduation Night of Cohort 12 by Anna Varghese, President of the Sixth Form Council 2015/2016 Date: 24 th November 2016 Venue: The Legendary Club, Ipoh A very good evening I bid to Ms. Kuok, the Campus Principal, Mr. Davidson, Head of Secondary School, Mr. Choong, Head of National School, Mr. Centeno, Deputy Head of Secondary School, Mr. Louis, Head of Sixth Form and my dear teachers and friends. These past 18 months have been long and hard, grueling and exhausting but absolutely extraordinary. Our time in Tenby Sixth Form has changed all of us so much for the better. From scrambling to prepare for debates to calming our jittery nerves before performing our Shakespearean play on a huge stage to even something as simple as singing with the residents of a senior citizens home, every single one of these experiences has truly enriched us.

And obviously not forgetting the main reason we are here, which is to benefit from a world class education to prepare us for life at university. And I know without a shadow of doubt that we wouldn t be here and have achieved what we have without our teachers. Thank you so much to our teachers. To Ms. Chong YC, Mrs. Jeya, Mrs. Pakianathan, Mdm. Lau and Mr. Alex, thank you for being so dedicated and for always going above and beyond what was required just to ensure we understood everything completely. I don t take any Arts subjects but my friends in the Arts classes have nothing but praise for their hardworking teachers. To Mr. Mano, Mr. Harry, Mr. Des, Mr. Louis, Mr. Francis and Dr. Judy (who both were unfortunately unable to attend), there are no words to adequately express our gratitude for all that you do each and every day just for us. A special thank you to Mr. Louis and Ms. Mangales (who unfortunately couldn t make it) who work tirelessly to organise our charity events, Global Perspectives debates, Shakespearean plays, Cameron Highlands trips and basically making sure nothing falls apart and everything runs smoothly. The Sixth Form wouldn t function as well as it does without you. A big thank you to our Campus Principal,Ms. Jane Kuok for recognising the Sixth Form as a unique facet to our school and for always treating us with the dignity appropriate to our age and as the young adults we are. And thank you for making a mark in the history of the Sixth Form by providing us with a Learning Centre. We hope that this learning centre will be the nucleus of a wider infrastructure for our Sixth Form.

I would like to thank Mr. Richard Davidson for providing us with leadership opportunities and for teaching us to responsible for ourselves. Thank you for encouraging us to always think bigger no matter how simple a project is. Thank you for supporting all the Sixth Form s long standing traditions like the GP Debates and our Shakespearean plays. Last but certainly not least, I would like to thank my class for always being supportive of all our projects. Every one of our projects has been a huge success and it wouldn t have been that way without all your time and contribution. Thank you to my official vice presidents, Ee Shih Liz and Tang Chi Hoe, for giving me wise counsel and for always shadowing me. And thank you to my two unofficial vice presidents, Phoebe Jane Soogan and Lydia Abraham. Whether it was finding a tiara in some godforsaken part of town or scouting the jungle, they were always there for me. I would like to wish good luck to Emily Wong, president of Cohort 13, who has been such a joy to work with and to Manpreet Kaur, president of Cohort 14 who unfortunately I haven t had the pleasure of working with very much. I wish you both of you all the best as my successor presidents, running everything and to help our Sixth Form to achieve greater heights. And of course a note of gratitude to Cohort 13 for organising such a fabulous event. I wish all of you the best in all your future endeavours and remember to savour every moment as time really does fly by. Thank you.
