2 LIBRARY & INFORMATION SERVICES: BACKGROUND Library and Information Services (L&IS) is a central Cardiff Metropolitan University (Cardiff Met) unit comprised of tfour main departments: Academic Skills Business Improvement Services Information Services Library Services Our remit is comprehensive, encompassing everything from management information systems through to library services. Our work is pivotal to Cardiff Met s institutional aims and its continued success. Student-centred learning and the achievement of both Teaching and Research Degree Awarding Powers places increasing reliance on L&IS to support staff and student objectives in teaching, learning and research. The changing role and profile of L&IS has been widely recognised within the University, and has been supported by significant development projects. These include the extensive redevelopments of the Learning Centres at Cyncoed and Llandaff; the latter receiving a capital investment of 1.5 million to support the move of the Cardiff School of Management the roll-out of L&IS support to Halls of Residences the launch of a new Learning Portal institutional funding for a mobile application project MANAGEMENT & STAFFING STRUCTURE L&IS is led by Paul Riley who reports directly to the Vice-Chancellor s Board (VCB). He is assisted by Tracy O Connor (L&IS Administrator), Emma Adamson (Head of Library Division) and Sean Cullinan (Head of ISD). The Academic Skills team is engaged in embedding academic skills support into the five Academic Schools. ISD comprises over fifty staff involved in IT support, development and administrative work. The Library Division is led by Emma Adamson, who is assisted by Claire Dutfield (Library Administrator) and the senior librarian team. The department is a visible, integral part of the University, and develops its strategies and projects accordingly, to support all students and staff studying and working at Cardiff Met.

4 LIBRARY DIVISION: AN INTRODUCTION The Library Division provides a user-centred service, which embraces the use of new technologies as well as traditional learning materials to inform and enable the educational process. The Divisional web site is available at The Library Division is one of the most utilised services at the University with over half a million annual visitors and the most visited internal webpages. The Division is central to enhancing the student experience through its Learning Centres and Learning Portal, and contributes to developing a skilled and employable graduate workforce. Learning Centres provide high-quality study environments for users, combining collections, ICT and reprographic facilities under one roof; delivered by professional and highly skilled staff. We provide extensive print, electronic and special collections and continually develop our services. We have invested in our Library Management System infrastructure as well as introduced self-service technology and improved ICT provision. Enquiry points and high staff visibility support our users across all campuses. The Learning Portal is the gateway for users both at home and abroad. The search facility Summon enables resource discovery of the e-library collections. The Electronic Library gives staff and students access to over one hundred academic electronic resources, ranging from JSTOR to Sports Discus, as well as in excess of 50,000 ebooks and ejournals. PROFESSIONAL INTERESTS & STAFF DEVELOPMENT The Library Division is a member of various professional organisations including: CILIP (Chartered Institute of Library and Information Professionals) HEPCW (Higher Education Purchasing Council for Wales) SCONUL (Society of College, National and University Libraries) WHELF (Welsh Higher Education Libraries Forum) The Department aims to foster good relationships with local and national library and information services, especially those within the higher education sector. Together with many other Schools and Departments, L&IS has successfully achieved the Investors in People (IiP) award for the third time. Library staff regularly attends local and national professional meetings and conferences to help support L&IS plans and projects and their own continuing professional development and interests. All new staff undertake an induction and are closely supported throughout a six-month probationary period. The continuing development of staff is planned, monitored and reviewed as part of the University s annual Staff Performance and Review scheme. The Library Division is also able to offer

5 support for CILIP Chartership; and to fund internal and external staff development training. WORKING WITH ACADEMIC STAFF & STUDENTS Each Librarian is responsible for the day-to-day running and long-term planning of each Learning Centre; and works closely with Academic Schools on collection and service development. All Librarians meet regularly with the Head of Library Division to discuss resource, management and strategic issues. Established project and working groups aid work on areas such as document delivery, circulation and health and safety. These groups comprise staff from all sections of the Library Division as well as external representatives, e.g. from ISD. Each Librarian manages a budget for the acquisition of materials and equipment, working with Deans of School, Directors of Learning & Teaching, Business Support Managers and other academic staff to ensure the materials purchased create a comprehensive, quality collection; reflective of the curricula and supportive of learning, teaching and research needs. In addition to this, Library staff maintains close contact with Schools through attendance at meetings, all-school events and other formal and informal links. Relationships with students are maintained through day-to-day contact, enquiry work, induction and information literacy work, as well as consultation. All of this alongside staff training sessions and service promotion events, ensure staff and students can utilise the Learning Centre s resources and services to their best effect. LLANDAFF LEARNING CENTRE Llandaff Learning Centre comprises fully integrated library collections, ICT and reprographics facilities to support the teaching, learning and research objectives of the three Schools based at Llandaff: Cardiff School Art and Design (CSAD), Cardiff School of Health Sciences (CSHS) and Cardiff School of Management (CSM). Llandaff Learning Centre houses library stock for these Schools, flexible study rooms, a large IT suite and benefits from 2CQR self service technology. It supports foundation, undergraduate, postgraduate and research levels and is open seven days a week throughout the academic year. 7 THE ACADEMIC LIBRAIRAN ROLE Academic Librarian role is a dynamic, motivated and user-facing professional; vital to the provision of high-quality services and developments within the Library Services. The Academic Librarian forms part of the professional library team, is a key contact for Academic Schools and support Units and are required to support Divisional, University and sectorial research developments. The post holder will be part of the Llandaff Learning Centre team, and will be responsible to the Librarian: Head of Academic Services. The post holder will assist the Librarian: Head of Academic Services and colleagues in service delivery to all users, to develop a responsive, professional support service for the University and for the Cardiff School of Management as well as peripheral support for all enquiries received from users; to ensure that a professional, timely response is provided at all times. The post holder will also support the Librarian: Head of Academic Services in the daily efficient running and organisation of the Learning Centre, staffing the helpdesks to support users in finding information and making best use of the collections; as well as advising on utilisation of the Learning Portal. The post holder will also provide peripheral support for user enquiries and ensure that a professional, timely response is provided. There may also be some requirements to contribute to acquisitions processes, and to advise on the use of the self-service kiosks, ICT and reprographics equipment. The post holder will assist the Librarian: Head of Academic Services and Academic Librarians at Llandaff, in supervising the work of Information Assistants. The post holder will be part of the Campus Library team and will work closely with staff on other campuses, including participation in working groups and task and finish projects, as required.

Lead role in Academic School engagement inclusive of School meeting and events participation; the creation, delivery and evaluation of Library-related training materials; and the creation and management of content for multiple platforms. E.g. the VLE and web. Collaborative role in ensuring L&IS strategy and elements of Corporate and Learning, Teaching and Assessment strategies are achieved. Principal Duties and Responsibilities: Uphold customer service excellence in relation to the Library environment, collections and team with adherence to risk management and health and safety standards. E.g. creation and maintenance of risk assessments and safe systems of work.

9 Induct, teach, and train students and staff in a variety of HE environments, such as workshops, seminars and large lectures, using a range of delivery techniques, including new technologies and blended approaches. Engage in the development and management of Library collections and systems; inclusive of trials, selection, acquisition, policy and procedure creation, workflow analysis, audit and evaluation activities. In conjunction with the Senior Library management team, administer and monitor the financial allocation and expenditure on resources. Adopt discipline-specific knowledge to align Library services, skills and literacy provision to disciplines and Schools. Promote and market Library Services through proactive and professional utilisation of communication technologies. Contribute to the planning cycle and delivery of L&IS strategic objectives to the University and its key stakeholders. Contribute to the design, development, quality assurance and evaluation of Library Services. This will include project group membership with designated responsibility to lead on key area, as well as the timely production of meaningful reports. Engage with others, including suppliers and networks, to implement innovation and change within your area of responsibility. E.g. LMS supplier, SUPC/HEPCW account suppliers, WHELF and/or JISC. Resolve problems and make decisions ensuring the effective delivery of services within own level of responsibility, referring more serious matters, as appropriate. E.g. NSS deficit programme areas. Ensure a professional, timely and customer-focused response to enquiries received, and to answer or refer these appropriately. Mentor and coach colleagues, and provide solutions to meet their development needs. Engage in continuous professional development by enhancing library, ICT and management qualifications. Participate in and develop internal and external networks in the areas of Library services, learning and teaching and account management. E.g. WHELF sub-group membership and project involvement. Disseminate activities and findings internally and externally and draw on experiences to enhance Library Services profile. This may include presenting at national conferences, other universities and internally. Identify and secure external and internal funds to support Library and Information Services L&IS activities, e.g. JISC or CyMAL grants.
