2 FUTURE LEADERS PROGRAMME Personal, team, and organisational challenges in professional services The new higher education environment creates a need for real collaboration between professional services departments. This means that managers now face the challenge of developing approaches for successful cross-service working. Leaders of the future will also tackle increasing complexity in the relationships they build with external stakeholders. The Future Leaders Programme is designed to support and challenge participants through the changes they face in their careers. The Future Leaders Programme provides a unique opportunity for experienced professional services staff (covering library, ICT, finance and procurement, student services, and related activities) to deepen their understanding and leadership ability, and develop their potential. The programme is aimed at those individuals who aspire to a strategic role within professional services and who have proven management experience. The programme has been developed in collaboration with SCONUL, UCISA and The British Library, and is now also supported by BUFDG. Focus The Future Leaders Programme assists participants to take a more visionary, strategic, and relational approach to build world class leadership capabilities within their field. Benefits By the end of this programme participants will have: Explored what it means to lead professional services in an institutional context. Examined their own skill levels against those required for institutional leadership roles. Learned how to learn to lead. Created their own personal development plan that builds on all their strengths. Carried out an agreed change project on behalf of their sponsoring institution. Increased their understanding of the nature of the leadership challenge and best practice. Acquired an in-depth appreciation of professional services and education issues in higher education, including the challenges and opportunities. Through the process of challenging fundamental ideas I held about both leadership and my own abilities, the programme has given me the tools, support and confidence to take risks, apply critical and creative thinking to problem-solving, and become a player in a new leadership role. 4 Dates The deadline for applications to the Future Leaders Programme (Cohort 9) is Thursday 31 October The ninth run of this 13-day programme will take place over a period of one year beginning in March Pre-application work will include the preparation and agreement of a change project proposal with their sponsoring institution. Pre-course work will include reading, and completion of psychometric assessments. Personal foundation of leadership Module One: Tuesday 11 - Friday 14 March 2014 This is an intensive 3.5 days focusing on self-awareness, leadership capabilities and the establishment of leadership inquiry. Leadership behaviours, from dynamic and organisational politics Module Two: Wednesday 9 - Friday 11 July 2014 In these three days, delegates will take an in-depth look at leadership behaviours, with special emphasis in the context of leading teams. Emphasis will also be placed on communications skills, influencing, conflict, holding difficult conversations and emotional intelligence. Leading organisations and change Module Three: Wednesday 5 - Friday 7 November 2014 The final three day residential element covers strategic decisions and organisational change, enabling delegates to ground their leadership in an appreciation of threats and opportunities in the field of professional services. Please keep these days free: Psychometric assessment review: Wednesday 21 May 2014 Venue: Delegate s own institution Action Learning: Thursday 22 May 2014, Wednesday 3 September 2014 and Wednesday 7 January 2015 Venue: Delegate s own institution Delegates present, share, and review their findings at the concluding Capstone Day: Monday 2 March 2015 The Future Leaders Programme has been a fantastic experience. It has challenged my perceptions of myself, my actions in relation to others and my thoughts about leadership. I now I feel that I have a greater understanding of what it is to be a leader and how I can make a difference. Nothing could have prepared me for the impact this programme has had. This is not just a leadership programme it is an exploration of inner self and an understanding of impact on your colleagues through a process of experiential learning. Am I better leader from this programme? I think so. Am I a better person from this programme? Undoubtedly.
5 Programme director and facilitators Doug Parkin Doug is the Programme Director for the Future Leaders Programme. He took up the post of Programme Director at the Leadership Foundation for Higher Education in January Prior to this he was Head of Staff and Educational Development at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine (University of London). This was a wide-ranging senior role that included responsibility for academic development, educational development, leadership development and core workplace skills. Doug has worked in adult learning and development for over fifteen years. With experience across a range of organisations and sectors, from the civil service to the arts, from large UK charities to higher education, he has explored and considered leadership from a wide range of perspectives: academic leadership, educational leadership, medical leadership, the leadership of public services, leadership in the arts, and leadership in a not-for-profit, voluntary sector environment. He has been responsible for leadership and management development in a variety of public sector roles, including on accredited programmes, and is a member of the Institute of Leadership and Management. Mark Jenner Associate, Leadership Foundation Dr Mark Jenner is a highly experienced learning and organisation development professional with a 20-year track record designing and facilitating high impact leadership programmes. Mark believes the demand for leadership exceeds its supply and that the development of leaders at all levels is a critical issue. His approach to leadership development was shaped by his doctoral research and his 20 years experience leading learning and talent development departments. Mark is a Visiting Lecturer at the Institute for Work Based Learning at Middlesex University, and an Associate Fellow at Imperial College Business School. He has completed programmes in Gestalt Advanced Facilitation Skills and Group Analysis and is an accredited practitioner for several team and leadership psychometric questionnaires. Shirley Wardell MA Associate, Leadership Foundation Shirley Wardell has been a Leadership Skills Trainer since She is a Director of Evolve LEADTEAM Ltd. and a speaker for Positive Money, who look at the impact of a debt based monetary system. Shirley is also a Thinking Environment Consultant and Coach. Shirley trains undergraduates, postgraduates and staff in leadership skills at the University of Surrey, University College London and the University of Southampton. Shirley contributes to leadership and coaching research projects conducted by the University of Surrey, School of Management. As a leadership trainer at the National School of Government, Shirley has delivered courses for the Department of Education and Skills, the Department of Constitutional Affairs and the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister.
