Festoons, flowers and a world full of enchantment, romance & beauty were everywhere at the Blue Baths on the night of the 16 th of June. Students out did themselves with their entrances with students turning up in everything from a fire truck to a campervan, classic cars, the Rotorua Duck Boat and even a police car. The glamour event of the calendar was enjoyed by Year 11, 12 & 13 students who chose to attend. Thank you very much to the 2018 Ball Committee of Kayla Sargison, Maria Trass, Leroy Nurkka, Sarah Heuvel, Caitlynn Rust, Brendan Singh, Ngahuia MacFarlane and Shelby Cuff for making the event a huge success. More photos and links for photos further on in the newsletter SCHOOL REPORT ISSUE School reports were issued to students today. Students also spent time reflecting on their reports and setting goals for next term.

3 TERM 2 KEY DATES 2018 Report Evening 26 June (4 6 pm) Report Evening END OF TERM 2 6 July 2018 SCHOOL HOLIDAYS 9 July 20 July June ( pm) NEWS & EVENTS NOTICE FOR YEAR 10 HISTORY The Essay on the Rise of Hitler is due Friday 29th June. COURSE AND SCHOLARSHIP WORKSHOPS TO YEAR 13: On Friday 29th June we will be running course and scholarship workshops to help you find and apply for courses and scholarships for This will be in the library periods 1, 2 & 3. If you are in 13ECO then you are already signed up for period 1. Other students will need to sign up on the sheet outside Whaea Haana s office AFTER you have checked with your subject teacher. Assessments must take priority. Students should join the google classroom (code = 9kqz1f7) BEFORE coming to the workshops and complete the google form so we can support you better. Your place in the workshop is not confirmed until you have completed the google form. On this google classroom are other resources including a careers quiz (if you have no idea what you are doing next year) and the scholarships database. PUKAKI SCHOLARSHIP AWARD WELLINGTON TRIP On Friday the 15th of June Paiaterangi Kapa along with HOD Maori, Mr Taumata Soloman, traveled with the other recipients of the Pukaki Scholarship Award to Wellington to visit the Reserve Bank of New Zealand, Government House, Te Papa Museum and Parliament. The award was established between the Ngati Whakaue Education Board and the Reserve Bank of New Zealand to honour the Ngati Whakaue chief of Te Arawa, Pukaki, who adorns the 50c coin of New Zealand. Each High School in Rotorua selects a descendant of Ngati Whakaue who possesses leadership qualities and is an active member of Ngati Whakaue. The initiative is in its 12th year now and continues to provide young leaders of Ngati Whakaue descent the opportunity to travel to Wellington and visit places of significance to both the Iwi and to New Zealand.

4 Paiaterangi was selected primarily for her leadership qualities, her academic abilities and her strong connection to her Ngati Whakaue hapu. The experience was a huge eye opener for all students involved and it provided them with an insight to a world they otherwise may not have seen in their lifetime. The trip was fully funded by the Reserve Bank of New Zealand. GENERAL ACTIVITY DONATION Each year the school seeks from parents a $70 donation per student, (this amount is included in the school fees account). This donation can be claimed as a charitable donation through Inland Revenue. At Rotorua Lakes High School we spend the donation on first aid supplies, school nurse, and to support co-curricular activities. It is unfortunate that we need to seek charitable support from parents / whanau for so-called free education but government grants to schools do not cover a lot of extras. Thank you very much to the parents and whanau who pay this voluntary donation. LOST PROPERTY Items of lost property (including school uniform) are being held at Student Reception. They will be held until the end of the term, after that they will be disposed of and or sent to charities.

8 SPORTS BOYS HOCKEY The final game of the current round saw us playing for 3rd place against TNT in Rotorua, and with a couple of the players out, a lot was going to rest on the shoulders of the rest of the team. The boys came out strong and the game was pretty much even for most of the first half. Strong defensive work by both teams saving goals of strong attacks. The beginning of the second half saw Lakes showing more dominance but just not being able to score. A nail biting last five minutes saw TNT score a lucky goal. Player of the day Amanullah Abdul Rahman. Unfortunately our Coach, Owen Mitai, was unable to make the game due to the passing away of his grandfather Minarepa (Mina) Mitai-Ngatai. The team and all at Rotorua Lakes High School send their condolences to Owen and his wife Morgan Aperahama, who is a teacher here at Lakes High. GIRLS HOCKEY The X1 Girls hockey had a really exciting game, with each goal being matched but in the end the girls came through with a win against Rotorua Girls High. They won 3-2. Player of the day was Shelby Cuff. The 2nd X1 Girls Hockey had an exciting game, with a serious injury, but managed to hold their own with a loss of 6-0. Player of the day was Maya Weir. BOYS SOCCER Another cold and blustery day awaited us on Wednesday. We were playing JPC 1st XI and unfortunately our boys were slow to warm up, literally and figuratively. We had a change of goalie at half time with an unwell Sean Folley. Cullen Dittmer stepped in and saved some magnificent attempts from JPC. It wasn't enough though with the final score being 6-0. Man of the match was Robbie Meredith. NEW ZEALAND Secondary Schools Cross Country Katie Tapsell participated in the NZ SS Cross Country Nationals held in Taupo on Sat 16 June. Katie did extremely well in her division of Year 9 girls, to place 40 th in a field of 120. Congratulations and well done Katie!! Congratulations to you all! SQUASH BOP Secondary Schools Division 2 and 3 Teams Champs This event was held on Tuesday 19 June at the Susan Devoy Fitness Centre in Tauranga. Our Boys team of Jared Nish, Marcus Nighy and Apache Davidson only lost one match to take out the runner up title of the Div 3 Boys Division with Jared winning all his games as our number one seed. Our Girls team had to play one player short so Tia Hingston and Stevie Shipgood did amazingly well to come runner up in the Girls Div 2 with Tia having to play twice in each match. 13 In early February the Holden Street Smart Road Safety Programme was officially launched, a hands-on driver-skills programme that aims to equip young kiwis with the knowledge and skills to safely navigate our roads. Holden Street Smart is a world-class, cognitive based driver programme that aims to positively influence the lives of young kiwis across the country. The Programme has been developed with the involvement of worldrenowned road safety expert, Peter Sheppard. In addition, passionate road safety advocate, Greg Murphy, is our Programme Ambassador. Offering a practical hands-on learning experience, Holden Street Smart is a programme that aims to add to, and compliment, the great work already undertaken by NZTA, NZ Police and others in the area of road safety and driving training. Holden Street Smart is a one-day event providing young drivers and their parents/caregivers the opportunity to undertake supervised driving practice. There is a focus on developing good decision-making strategies for safe driving, including assessing themselves, reading the road environment, resisting peer pressure, managing or eliminating distractions and planning ahead. The Programme takes place in safe, controlled, off-theroad environments, under the watchful eye of qualified coaches plus the parent/caregiver. This provides the parent the opportunity to also assess themselves, in order to be a better coach and mentor to their teen. Holden Street Smart will be delivering the programme in the July school holidays at the Bruce McLaren Motorsport Park, Taupo, on Wed 11 July Registrations are open for only $49 at Watch the video:-

15 This programme is run by some Rotary Districts in Australia and all Districts in New Zealand. It is designed for year old students to experience a true exchange with a family in the other country. In 2019 Australian students arrive in New Zealand and attend school with their matched student during Term 2. Both students then return to Australia at the end of June and attend the Australian student s school during Term 3. In 2019 it is hoped, there will be 60 students from Australia and New Zealand involved in the programme. In the past ten years more than 1600 students have participated in this life-changing experience. One of the aims of Rotary International throughout the world is to bring about a better understanding between people. Student Exchanges are one of the best ways to help achieve this and also develop life-long friendships between individual students, families and the people they meet during the exchange. Students are matched, where possible, with students of similar interest in the other country. You are invited to visit their comprehensive website: for: Expression of Interest Forms or see PDF below Application Forms and dates.
