2 INTERN PROGRAM POLICIES AND PROCEDURES NON-PAID/FOR CREDIT INTERNS Policy Credit interns must: A. Be enrolled at an accredited college with an intern program and have achieved at least junior status. B. Receive course credit. C. Have a letter from the college stating the class and number of units to be earned. D. Complete the Student Intern Agreement and Intern Information Sheet prior to the first day of the internship. All interns must: A. Be at least 18 years of age. B. Receive no monetary compensation for the hours worked. C. Participate no more than 20 hours per week. D. Not exceed 6 months of employment in their internship. E. Not participate under the supervision or in the same department of a family member. F. Not perform work that is performed by Union employees. Requirements Students must complete at least 150 hours during the Fall and Spring semesters and 120 hours during the Summer semester. The fall and spring semesters are 15-week sessions; the summer semester is a 12-week session. For each session, interns will work no more than 12 hours per week. A statement from the educational institution and advisor verifying credit will be awarded upon successful completion of the program. Procedure Prior to the interns first day, the Business Office must receive a copy of the following: 1. The Student Intern Agreement 2. The Intern Information Sheet 3. (If receiving course credit) A letter from the college stating the class and number of units to be earned. The Business Office will submit new hire paperwork and termination paperwork for all interns as they would with every other Temporary, Part-time employee. Expectations Professionalism in communication, personal presentation, punctuality and attendance. Demonstration of initiative, willingness to develop new and useful skills, and enthusiasm in the performance of all tasks. A completed semester project that will demonstrate knowledge of the semester s work. To Apply: Submit cover letter, resume, and complete application, including credit verification statement. 5 DEPARTMENTAL INTERN RESPONSIBILITIES AND OBJECTIVES CW 27, WGNT-TV s internship program is dramatically different. We offer a unique opportunity to explore the broadcast industry that compliments the educational experience. We offer internships in the following areas: (1) ASSISTANT PRODUCER Applicants for this intern position should be interested in pursuing a career in broadcast production. The position s primary focus is to assist the producer of Here & Now on The CW, a 30-minute talk show. The candidate must be creative and technically savvy. They should have great communication skills and some video editing experience. The candidate must be able to handle more than one project at any time and MUST be available every Tuesday between 10 AM Noon. AS AN ASSISTANT PRODUCER, YOU WILL WORK IN THE FOLLOWING AREAS: Public Affairs Maintenance of show guests files and data bases Topic research for special projects Assist in show guests contact Assist in production of weekly talk shows Assist in production sessions Assist with implementation and development of various projects and programs General administrative Semester project: write/produce a :30 second public service announcement Here & Now on The CW Topic research and development Pre-show interviewing Assist with program packages and features Screen and log remote footage General administrative Semester project: Select, develop and produce a show Production Log tapes of remote footage and studio shoots Copywriting for promotion and production Assist with remote and studio shoots Research for special projects General administrative
6 DEPARTMENTAL INTERN RESPONSIBILITIES AND OBJECTIVES (2) SALES/RESEARCH ASSISTANT Applicants for this intern position should be interested in pursuing a career in broadcast/advertising. They should desire to seek employment in a media-sales environment. The position s primary focus is to assist the sales department with daily and on-going projects. Fifty-percent of the position includes administrative duties and the other fifty-percent includes analyzing research data, writing presentations and assisting management with reports/projects. AS A SALES/RESEARCH ASSISTANT, YOU WILL WORK IN THE FOLLOWING AREAS: Research Assist Research with pulling/analyzing qualitative and quantitative data for sales pieces Ratings and demographic research Handle mail and faxes for department and disperse accordingly Responsible for typing and faxing for sales team Answer departmental phones Familiarity with Excel, Microsoft Word and Power Point required Out-going, professional attitude needed Semester project: develop and execute a client specific scarborough presentation using viewer and qualitative research to include marketing one-sheets Sales Assist Sales Assistant with duties as deemed necessary Sales presentation development (proposals and marketing plans) Assist with sales promotion activities Maintain and replenish sales pieces File contracts daily Familiarity with Excel, Microsoft Word and Power Point required Schedule production and camera shoots for clients and special programs Desire to seek employment in a media-sales environment Out-going, professional attitude Semester project: develop and execute a sales presentation using viewer and qualitative research (3) PRODUCTION ASSISTANT Applicants for this intern position should be interested in pursuing a career in broadcast production. The position s primary focus is to assist the commercial and show producers of CW 27. The candidate must be creative and technically savvy. They should have great communication and skills, photography and video editing experience. The candidate must be able to handle more than one project at any time. Some evening and night work will be required. AS A PRODUCTION ASSISTANT, YOU WILL WORK IN THE FOLLOWING AREAS: Production Log tapes of remote footage and studio shoots Copywriting for production Assist with remote and studio shoots Assist with all locally produced shows Video editing Research for special projects General administrative Semester project: develop, shoot and edit a 30-second commercial
7 4) PROMOTIONS ASSISTANT The primary, but not singular, role of the promotions intern is to provide support for the Creative Services Department in all matters relative to audience development to include both on-air and off-air tasks and assignments as directed by the supervisor of the department or the person representing the supervisor. AS A PROMOTIONS ASSISTANT, YOU WILL WORK IN THE FOLLOWING AREAS These normal daily tasks and functions will include, but not necessarily be limited to: Creative development for all station on-air promotion messages, in all forms of media deemed necessary, from concept through execution and proof of performance phases, in a timely manner on or ahead of deadline. The intern will learn how to screen various program and field tapes, or other such production elements, in order to find all appropriate and necessary material to complete each assigned production task. The intern will also become familiar with, if not already, all pertinent industry standard production equipment, of either hardware or software nature, provided for studio, field or editing projects, needed to successfully complete all assignments to the satisfaction of the immediate supervisor and reach all established goals outlined for each assignment. The intern will learn how to be a creative writing specialist familiar with all aspects of script creation and development, and the proper construction of innovative, compelling and creative scripts designed to work in concert with various production elements including music and graphics in the execution of assignments. The intern will assist with various field assignments such as movie premieres, video blogs, casting calls and any other events deemed necessary by the promotions department. The intern will learn how to produce all needed graphics to the extent available on the equipment used. The intern will be familiar with on-air marketing and promotion strategies and share responsibility for scheduling on-air promos in the station traffic system on a daily basis. The intern will be able to maintain a positive attitude and successfully deal with criticism and revision of product as required. The intern will be able to successfully coexist with fellow staff members and bring a positive attitude to the workplace while following established company policy in all matters of employee relations and job functions. The intern will be available to provide support as assigned by attending various station functions and community outreach events and acting as a station representative whenever the situation arises. The intern will primarily be responsible for the organization and maintenance of our clip and promo library based on the structure that has been developed by the other producers. The intern will assist in the weekly duties of the Here and Now production and be able to demonstrate competency in all areas. Semester Project: The intern will be able to successfully brainstorm, write, produce and edit a twentysecond promo at the end of the semester. If completed successfully, the intern s project may be broadcast on air. The functions outlined above do not necessarily constitute the only expectations of the intern. The manager/supervisor reserves the right to assign the intern to other tasks and assignments as deemed necessary by station management and at the complete and full discretion of the manager and/or station management.

10 VIACOM INC. STUDENT INTERN PROGRAM STUDENT INTERN AGREEMENT In consideration of Viacom Inc. ( Viacom ) allowing me to participate in its Student Intern Program (at my request), which participation will commence and end, I understand and agree to the following: 1. I am enrolled as a student at (the College ), which has a student intern program. 2. I am not being monetarily compensated for my intern work for Viacom. 3. I am eligible to earn course credit from the College for participating in Viacom s Student Intern Program. 4. I have presented to Viacom a letter from the College stating the type and number of course credits to be earned. 5. Viacom s Student Intern Program is designed predominantly for the benefit of its participating students and, consequently, my participation in such program is for the predominant purpose of furthering my education. 6.
