1 City of Angels School Independent Study Los Angeles Unified School District Integrated Coordinated Science 1A Physics (Introduction to High School Physics) Instructional Guide This guide covers one-half of the first semester of a one-year course that covers California state content standards for senior high school physical and earth sciences. It is a requirement for graduation. Content This course is designed to cover the first of two years of the study of science as mandated by the California State Content Standards for high school as listed on the web site of the State Department of Education Specific standards covered include: 4a. Students know waves carry energy from one place to another. 4b. Students know how to identify transverse and longitudinal waves in mechanical media, such as springs and ropes and on the earth (seismic waves) 4d. Students know sound is a longitudinal wave whose speed depends on the properties of the medium in which it propagates. 4e. Students know radio waves, light and X-rays are different wavelength bands in the spectrum of electromagnetic waves whose speed in a vacuum is approximately 3 x 10 8 m/s (186,000 miles/second). 4f. Students know how to identify the characteristic properties of waves: interference (beats), diffraction, refraction, Doppler effect, and polarization. 5d. Students know the properties of transistors and the role of transistors in electric circuits. 5e. Students know charged particles are sources of electric fields and are subject to the forces of the electric fields from the charges. 5h. Students know changing magnetic fields produce electric fields, thereby inducing currents in nearby conductors. 5j. Students know electric and magnetic fields contain energy and act as vector force fields 5m. Students know static electric fields have as their source some arrangement of electric charges. 3f. Students know the statement Entropy tends to increase is a law of statistical probability that governs all closed systems (second law of thermodynamics). Textbook Active Physics: Integrated Coordinated Science for the 21 st Century, It s About Time, 2000 Website Completing and Submitting Your Work This course is activity-based. Since, at home, you will not have most of the materials needed to complete each activity, most of them have been recorded for you and are available to view on the course website or DVD. You will need to submit your work using your own paper; no worksheets will be provided. Write your name, date, course name (ICS 1A Physics) and Week # on the top left corner of the first page of each weekly assignment. Closely follow the instructions in this instructional guide. Organize and label your work by Day # and Item #. Grades Weekly assignments are worth 300 points. 6 Final Project Descriptions for ICS 1A/1B, 2A/2B Choose one of the following for your Final Project: Chapter Challenge: Select and complete any one of the chapter challenges/projects. See the first two pages and the last page of each chapter for instructions. Museum Visit: Visit a local science museum. Write a five-paragraph summary of your visit using the following format: o Paragraph 1: A general description of the museum and the date and time you visited. o Paragraph 2: A description of an exhibit and how it relates to a concept you ve learned in this course. o Paragraph 3: A description of a second exhibit and how it relates to another concept you learned in this course. o Paragraph 4: A description of a third exhibit and how it relates to another concept you ve learned in this course. o Paragraph 5: General final thoughts on your visit to the museum. NOTE: Paragraphs 2, 3 and 4 must be at least five sentences long. Newspaper or Magazine Article Summary: Find three recent (no more than six months old) newspaper or magazine articles with topics related to concepts you ve learned in this course. Write a five-paragraph synopsis of the three articles using the following format: o Paragraph 1: Cite the names, authors, and sources of your three articles. o Paragraph 2: A brief summary of the first article and how it relates to a concept you ve learned in this course. o Paragraph 3: A brief summary of the second article and how it relates to a concept you ve learned in this course. o Paragraph 4: A brief summary of the third article and how it relates to a concept you ve learned in this course. o Paragraph 5: General final thoughts on your three articles. NOTE: Paragraphs 2, 3 and 4 must be at least five sentences long. Film Documentary Summary: Watch an hour long documentary on a topic related to a concept you learned in this course. Write a five-paragraph summary of the documentary using the following format. o Paragraph 1: Cite the title and source of the movie and give a brief description of what it covers. o Paragraph 2: A description of one new concept you learned from the movie. o Paragraph 3: A description of another new concept you learned from the movie. o Paragraph 4: A description of a third new concept you learned from the movie. o Paragraph 5: General final thoughts on the movie. (i.e. Would you recommend it? Why or why not?) NOTE: Paragraphs 2, 3 and 4 must be at least five sentences long. Poster Presentation: Create a poster that illustrates or diagrams a concept you learned in this course. The poster should be at least 2x3 feet and use bold letters and colors. It should also include at least five scientific terms. Feel free to use illustrations in your textbook. You will need to explain your poster in a two-minute speech/presentation to your teacher. Videotaped Experiment: Choose any of an activity s Stretching Exercises. Videotape a re-creation of the exercise. The video should last for 2-3 minutes and should include an introduction that describes your hypothesis, narration (while you are conducting the activity), and a conclusion that summarizes your findings. PowerPoint Presentation: Prepare a 5-minute PowerPoint presentation explaining or demonstrating a concept learned in this course. You must include at least 5 slides. At least five terms learned in this course should be incorporated. You will present your report to an audience that will include teachers and fellow students. Artistic Expression: Compose a song, choreograph a dance, write a poem, or create a painting or other visual art piece that explains or demonstrates a concept you learned in this course. Lyrics for songs and poems must fill at least one standard piece of paper (double-spaced with a 12 point font). Songs and Dances must be performed live or on video and must last 2-3 minutes. Dances and visual art pieces will need to be submitted with a one-minute verbal explanation or one-page report of your work. At least five terms learned in this course should be incorporated.
