1 The Official Newsletter of Bishop Ready Wrestling Serving Alumni, Parents, Wrestlers, and Friends of Bishop Ready Wrestling March 27, 2012 Chief Editor: Mike Hall Assistant: Melissa Davis-Snider Volume 3, Issue 4 COMPETITION RESULTS FOR THE LAST PART OF THE SEASON Central Catholic League Hartley High School The month of February is the most exciting month in high school wrestling. The first event to finish out the regular season was the League Meet held at Hartley High School on February 11. The varsity and junior varsity both competed for the League Championships. The varsity team was unable to repeat a second team title. They fought hard but came up short by 10.5 points to the Hartley Hawks, who captured their very first CCL title. The individual winners were: 106 Steven Pozz CCL Champion 145 Patrick Stover CCL Champion 120 Dalton Scott 2 nd Place 152 David Smith 2 nd Place 126 Bobby Smith CCL Champion 160 Nick Skordilis 2 nd Place 132 Will Martello 3 rd Place 220 Greyson Budd 2 nd Place 138 Nick Headlee 2 nd Place 285 Patrik Garren CCL Champion The JV wrestlers also competed for the TOP position in the CCL and the following were Ready place winners. There were no team scores kept: 120 Ryan McFarland 1 st Place 132 Nick Seipel 1 st Place 138 Gavin Gatley 1 st Place 145 Brian Weiner 1 st Place Contact Information 707 Salisbury Rd Columbus, Oh mhall708@columbus.rr.com UPCOMING EVENTS Sophomore Nationals Virginia Beach TBA April 15 th -Summer, Sundays Open BRHS April 20 th & 21 st Tournament of Champions Columbus Convention Center June 4 th Bishop Ready Wrestling Trapper John s Canoe Outing Canoe Livery June 5 th -8th Bishop Ready Wrestling Bishop Ready Sectional Tournament Cardington Lincoln High School When choosing a sectional site, the coaching staff debated whether to travel a little farther for possibly a little tougher sectional in an attempt to get more wrestlers in a better position to qualify for the State Tournament. We qualified four wrestlers to the district tournament. This does not sound like a lot but we had five other wrestlers that were not only one match, but just a couple of points from qualifying! The good thing about this experience was that we gained the respect of the schools in this sectional, which could help us in the future. The other aspect is that all our competitors were either freshmen or sophomores. The individual winners were: 106 Steven Pozz 5 th Place (district alternate) 138 Nick Headlee 6 th Place 120 Dalton Scott 4 th Place (district qualifier) 145 Patrick Stover 2 nd Place 126 Bobby Smith Sectional Champion 152 David Smith 6 th Place 132 Will Martello 5 th Place (district alternate) 285 Patrik Garren Sectional Champion

2 COMPETITION RESULTS FOR THE LAST PART OF THE SEASON District Tournament Heath High School The Ready grapplers competed in the 2012 Division III Central District Tournament held at Heath High School. We had four participants, four placers, and three Champions. Each wrestled to his fullest potential. The individual placements were: 145 Patrick Stover 6 th Place 120 Dalton Scott District Champion (State Qualifier) 126 Bobby Smith District Champion (State Qualifier) 285 Patrik Garren District Champion (State Qualifier) Patrick Stover: determined to get out in his District Finals match. The team with just four individuals placed 6 th out of 55 teams. Dalton, Bobby, and Patrik qualified to the state tournament which was to be held at the Schottenstein Center at The Ohio State University. State Tournament The Schottenstein Center Bobby Smith getting some last minute instruction from Coach Van Gundy on how to become a District Champion! The three state qualifiers Dalton Scott, Bobby Smith, and Patrik Garren all participated in the 75 th State Wrestling Tournament held at the Schottenstein Center on March 1, 2, and 3. The team placement was 34 th overall. Even though unable to place, Dalton and Bobby wrestled very strong. Dalton Scott defends a leg attack by his opponent from Cardington- Lincoln in the district finals. Patrik Garren wrestled extremely well and only lost one match to the #10 th nationally ranked heavyweight. He ended up placing third for the weekend a great accomplishment for a sophomore. We would like to congratulate all of the state qualifiers and the entire Silver Knight wrestling team for a great season. NOTE: A special thanks goes out to Luke DiSabato Ready Alum 82 for providing a nice sit down pasta dinner after weigh-ins over at the Varsity Club. Patrik Garren NEWS FLASH The most recent USA Wrestling magazine had the national rankings for freshman and sophomores in the country. Bobby Smith was ranked 21 st at 120 lbs. In addition, Dre k Brumley from St. Vincent-St. Mary was ranked 26 th at 285 lbs.; FYI, he placed lower than Patrik Garren at the Catholic Invitational Tournament of Page 2

3 A REPORT OF THE BISHOP READY YOUTH AND JUNIOR HIGH WRESTLING PROGRAMS The Bishop Ready Youth Program participated in a new wrestling league, the Russ Hellickson Central Ohio Youth Wrestling League. Our wrestlers participated in four regular season tournaments. The grades that participated in the youth program were kindergarten thru 6 th grade. The numbers of place winners in all of the tournaments were: First Place: 58 Second Place: 37 Third Place: 42 Fourth Place 17 They collectively had 180 pins. The outstanding effort is a reflection of the great coaches and hard work by the athletes. This has been Ready Youth Wrestling s strongest year in quite some time. A special thanks goes out to all the parents and families who worked the tables and to the coaches who make this experience available to the youth wrestlers. BISHOP READY JUNIOR HIGH WRESTLING The junior high team struggled with some tournaments disallowing some of our higher level sixth graders from competing in certain 7 th and 8 th grade tournaments. The events that they participated in were: The Brandon Wade Memorial at Buckeye Valley High School Triangular Match against Hartley and Teay s Valley West: The Silver Knights beat Hartley but lost to Teay s Valley New Year s Brawl - 6 th Grade Tournament at Cardington High School New Lexington Tournament and The Licking Heights Middle School Wrestling Tournaments 7 th and 8 th grade Their last team event was a home dual meet against Newark Catholic. The Junior High also sent a number of wrestlers to the Junior High State Qualifier, the results of which were not available at the time of printing. Page 3

4 THE BREAKFAST CLUB The Breakfast Club is a group of six wrestlers who sacrificed their extra sleep time by coming in early, Monday through Thursday, to get an extra workout in. These extra training sessions gave our Ready wrestlers that extra edge in the third period. Of the six, all were sectional place winners, four were district place winners, three district champions, and one state placer. The super six were: Steven Pozz, Dalton Scott, Bobby Smith, Will Martello, Patrick Stover, and Patrik Garren. The culminating event for the breakfast club is on Sunday after the state tournament where we gather for mass to thank God for the blessings He has bestowed upon on us throughout our season. We then go out and feast on a big breakfast that makes all the hard work seem worth it. Hopefully, we can increase membership next year! No fees required, only hard work! FINDING THE MENTAL EDGE! As wrestling coaches, we are constantly trying to assess what makes each of our wrestlers perform at his optimal level. We train Ready grapplers to be superior to their opponents in every aspect of the sport. Ready wrestlers have excellent technique. Ready wrestlers are always the best-conditioned athletes on the mat. But there is one aspect we need to continue to improve on: the mental aspect of the sport. Coach Van Gundy does a wonderful job breaking down a tournament and helping the wrestlers see where they can improve. Week after week he mentally prepares the team. He also has one-on-one sessions with individuals who need that extra push to believe in themselves and the Ready system. Another component of mentally preparing athletes for competition is bringing in wrestling notables to continue their mental growth in the sport. This year we were fortunate to have Russ Hellickskon, former Ohio State wrestling coach, come and talk to the wrestlers. Russ was the head coach at OSU for 20 years, from 1986 until He coached 41 All-Americans, including five in 2004 when the Buckeyes finished a school-best third at the NCAA Championships. He compiled a record of at Ohio State. His conversation with the team gave them insight in the hard work ethic that he was raised with on a farm in Wisconsin. He explained that his father told him that if they were in a sport their work-load on the farm was lightened. So all of his siblings were three sport kids. Since he wasn t very good at basketball like the others, he decided to try wrestling. He also talked about those individuals in his life who were instrumental in making him who he is today. One coach named Doug Blubaugh, a gold medalist, gave him these words that he would use to motivate him at all levels of competition and into his coaching career: ABILITY OPPORTUNITY EFFORT ATTITUDE The first two are God-given but the second two we control and can use to determine our success. Volume 3, Issue 4 RUSS HELLICKSKON talks with the wrestlers. Page 4
