Detail any five Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities and Challenges (SWOC) of the department Strengths: i) After the college received autonomy, it has become possible for the department to reframe the syllabus keeping in mind both the ground reality of the students background and the recent trends in the subject. ii) Favourable teacher-student ratio is another strong point of the department and because of this teachers and learners can interact in a more fruitful manner. iii) Residential nature of the college provides the students with the scope for Manual for Autonomous Colleges Page 16 of 18
17 getting academic counseling even after class hours. iv) Rich library collection facilitates the teachers and the students to acquaint themselves with the changing dimensions of the subject. v) Effective and sincere support by the ex-students of the department helps the weaker students to cover up their lacuna in the subject. Weakness: i) Sometimes, students, coming from the science and non-philosophy background, do not have any prior concept of the subject and it gets in the way of their understanding the basic concepts of the subject. ii) Poor skill in English language of most of the students is another problem for which they remain ever afraid of studying good books written in English. iii) Now-a-days, the scope of post-academic placement in service sector, especially in WBSSC, for the students of Philosophy is seemingly becoming limited. Hence, sometimes, good students are not willing to study this subject as their major one. iv) Lack of motivation of a group of students who are often forced to choose the subject as their second preference is another problem. v) Scarcity of space is another weakness of the department for which allotment of classes, sometimes, faces a genuine problem. Opportunities: i) Autonomous Status has given us an ample scope for the modernization of the syllabus, we can think in broader ways to make the syllabus more joboriented. ii) To build up linkages with neighbouring colleges and the institutes of repute is a field which may be gainfully explored. Challenges: i) To encourage students develop the language skill. ii) To find solutions to the declining trend of student enrolment. Manual for Autonomous Colleges Page 17 of 18
18 iii) To make the students aware of the fact that a variety of employment opportunities are available to them outside the traditional ones. iv) To add to the number of teaching staff so that the department can introduce newer courses. 39. Future plans of the department. i) Introduction of PG course in Philosophy. ii) Build up linkage with National level institutes like ICPR, Rasbehari Das Memorial Trust, Bangiya Darshan Parishat, Darshan O Samaj Trust etc. iii) To publish the departmental journal. iv) To procure more international standard journals and books.
