ISC at Haileybury An excellent summer school in an amazing location Welcome to International Student Club, an English language summer school for international students aged years. For the last 20 years we have held our courses are held at Haileybury, a beautiful, historic boarding school located between Cambridge and London. Haileybury was founded in 1862, has fantastic school facilities, comfortable accommodation and is set in hundreds of acres of beautiful grounds. We have just celebrated our 20th year of ISC. When I started the school in 1997 I wanted to have the best possible summer school in the best possible location, where I could enjoy being with the students every day. At Haileybury I found what I was looking for and I believe you will too. With the help of my husband, Martin, my co-course director, Allen Dadge, and our experienced, enthusiastic staff, we will provide you with a memorable educational experience. In our last British Council inspection we were awarded 9 areas of strength in staff management, student administration, quality assurance, premises and facilities, teaching, care of students, accommodation, leisure opportunities and care of under-18s. ISC is a special place, where you will have a great time, improve your English and make friends for life. We think you ll agree that ISC is an excellent summer school in an amazing location. Director Course Director
Our setting ISC s courses take place at Haileybury, a large, independent school that was founded in The school has over 500 acres of beautiful grounds, set in the Hertfordshire countryside. Haileybury is located near the town of Hertford and is only an hour from London and its airports. The school has a mix of historic and impressive, modern buildings that have won RIBA (Royal Institute of British Architects) architectural awards. There are fantastic sports facilities; including 8 tennis courts, football pitches and lots of outdoor playing fields. Students also have excellent facilities for theatre, art and leisure activities. There are lots of places for our students to relax and make new friends, including a bright, modern café and large common rooms in all the boarding houses. All of the boarding houses are within a 5 minute walk from the classrooms, dining hall, café and sports facilities. The campus has 24 hour security and there is always a member of staff available to help students. ISC is a wonderful place to spend your summer, learn English and make friends for life.
About ISC ISC is managed by me, Jill Cutting and my co-course director Allen Dadge. My husband and codirector, Martin McMahon, still gives his support and comes to visit us throughout the course. Between us, we have over 40 years of experience of organising summer schools. Our director of studies, Nicola Lee, oversees our friendly and experienced teaching team, who aim to provide you with fun, interesting and communicative lessons. Our enthusiastic activity director and staff organise a variety of entertaining activities, from sports to circus skills, for you to enjoy. Many of our students comment on how caring, positive and supportive our ISC staff are. Our talented and professional team at ISC are dedicated to making your experience a special one! What we offer At Haileybury we offer a fully inclusive programme comprising: Residential accommodation in comfortable boarding houses Full-board - breakfast, lunch, dinner and a bedtime snack 15 hours (20 lessons) of English tuition per week Maximum 16 students per class Project work in international teams, leading to a final show in the theatre One full day and two half day trips or two full day trips per week Afternoon and evening activities every day Services of a dedicated leader for individual students 24 hour welfare service
The English courses You will have 15 hours of General English, British Culture and Project classes a week. We have an excellent team of experienced, professional and friendly teachers who were awarded a strength for teaching in our recent British Council inspection. Lessons are interesting and fun and focus on improving communication skills. We want to help you improve your confidence and fluency when using English. When you arrive, you will do a short test so that we can put you in the correct class. Our levels range from elementary to advanced. Students should have studied English for a year prior to studying at ISC. We do not offer classes for beginners. The first two lessons of each day are General English, in which you will learn about a variety of subjects and have lots of opportunities to practise your speaking with your international classmates. In the third lesson you will learn about British Culture, including the way of life, food, music and festivals. You also prepare for your excursions, where you can practise all the new English you learnt in class! The fourth lesson of the day is Project class. You will work with your classmates to create a drama Project. At the end of the course, we have an exciting Project show. Our teachers care about helping each individual student to progress and they use a variety of motivating activities, materials and technology to help you improve. Classes are small, with a maximum of 16 students and you will learn with classmates from all around the world. Learning is fun at ISC and we want to help you learn and use English to the best of your ability!
Activities Our enthusiastic activity staff organise a daily programme of sports, arts and crafts, competitions, dance workshops and games. During activities, you can use your English to communicate in real life situations and to make new friends. For some of the activities, you compete with your international Project team to win points for good participation, English and behaviour in and out of class. The Project teams compete to win the ISC Project cup, which is presented to the winners at the end of the course. Excursions You go on excursions two or three times a week to places of cultural or historical importance. ISC has a fantastic location and you visit London at least once a week. You also visit nearby Cambridge, Windsor, Hertford and St Albans. Our staff will give you guided tours on excursions, so you can learn all about British culture and history. We want you to be safe on trips, so we have a ratio of 1 adult per 15 students. On most trips there is free time for you to explore or go shopping with your new friends. 11 Welfare The most important thing for us, is that you are happy and cared for while you are at ISC, so that you have an enjoyable learning experience. We want you to know that we will look after you very well at ISC and help you however we can. Our office is open every day and there is a head of house and other staff in your boarding houses after that time. If you have any problems, all of our staff are happy to help. Haileybury has a very safe campus, with 24 hour security. We expect you to stay on campus, except when you go on organised excursions with our staff. When on trips you should respect the school s rules, to help keep you safe. If you feel ill, we have first-aid trained staff on site and a doctor and two hospitals nearby. Your course directors Al, Jill and all the staff live on campus and you are given a 24 hour emergency telephone number, so you can contact them any time. Travelling Alone You have an opportunity to make international friends and speak more English in a safe environment Some of our students travel in groups, but we always have a lot of students who travel to the school alone or with a friend. We call these students individuals and we put you into an individuals group with a British group leader to look after you. This means you always have someone that you know well to go to if you have any problems. This truly international group makes it easier for students to make international friends and, of course, to do so in English. To ensure you are happy and well cared for, we: Appoint an experienced member of staff to take the role of Individuals Group Leader. Take registers 4 times a day - a chance to check all is OK. Keep pocket money in the school safe in the office, so you have regular contact with the course directors. Hold individuals meetings twice a week to give out information. Provide a dedicated group leader phone number and 24-hour emergency number. Help students develop their independence and improve their English very quickly.
