5 HTW Berlin's campus is located in Oberschöneweide in borough of Treptow-Köpenick in south eastern Berlin. The name dates back to a 16th-century travelogue by Joachim II Hector, Elector of Brandenburg, who rhapsodised about 'beautiful meadow'. The Allgemeine Elektricitäts-Gesellschaft AEG subsidiary had a major impact on borough. In 1897, it commissioned first electricity station in Germany and largest cable factory in Europe re. Within a short time, Schöneweide became a centre of heavy industry in Berlin. Housing estates and social facilities for labourers soon followed. Leading architects created modern industrial buildings in which cables, power transformers, batteries, etc. were produced. During GDR era, Oberschöneweide remained an important industrial location. The 'Wilhelm Pieck' state cable production holding company was dissolved in 1990 and most of companies closed. The historical former industrial park direct on Spree River has now become a modern location for science. The imposing buildings have been carefully renovated and supplemented by new buildings. In 2006, HTW Berlin moved into its first building re; since 2009, around 9,000 students and 200 academics in fields of technology, computer science, culture and design, and many administrative staff members attend classes, perform research and work on campus, which has an area of 70,000 m2.
