Explain the basic concepts and trends in administrative office management, which include a discussion of traditional office management practices, emerging elements of management and practices, administrative management resource areas, and restructured office systems and training needs. 2. Discuss the leadership and communication skills in business environments including groups, teams, and dealing with conflict issues. 3. Learn how to manage computer telecommunications and office network systems in the international global economy. 4. Manage human resources in the office, which include staffing and on-the-job employee practices as well as work ethics and business etiquette. 5. Explain other essential communication skills, which include employee recognition and compensation, health-related issues, office design, and health and safety issues. This syllabus has been constructed to be as complete as possible but is by no means a binding document. I reserve the right to alter policies, procedures, and the syllabus as needed. Please utilize the website regularly as any changes to the syllabus will be posted there. How to proceed through the course: Students should plan to have three hours of study time per week for each credit hour of class time. Example: when taking a typical 3 credit hour course, students should plan to spend at least 9 hours per week doing coursework and studying for that course regardless of the mode of delivery (online, hybrid, face-to-face). Chapters from your textbook: Chapters are to be studied weekly along with the resources for each chapter located in the Content area of your Florida Online course. Tests/Quizzes to be taken online: Online Exams can be completed early; however, each exam has an ending date and time and will close as specified. You cannot complete the exams after they close so please pay close attention to those ending dates and times! Each chapter has a practice quiz. The practice quizzes can be completed an unlimited number of times. There are no points associated with the practice quizzes. Informal Report Informal Report consists of Internet Research Activities. There is a handout located under the Content link in Florida Online. The Internet Research Activities are to be completed and saved in one (1) word processing document and uploaded into Fla Online Assignments dropbox=300 points. 4 Discussions: There will be two graded discussion topics. You must contribute to each discussion topic within the specific dates during which each discussion is open. The graded discussion topics are posted in the Discussion Forum of your online classroom. To access the discussion topics, click on the Discussions link in your class shell. Points will be awarded based on the quality of your discussion, the results of your research on the topic, and your effectiveness in interacting with other students. Remember that the GRADED discussions take the place of classroom participation. So, please devote sufficient time and effort to this important part of our course. Please review Discussion Information and Grading Criteria below carefully for the specific discussion topic, and review how your discussions will be graded. Grading Criteria for Graded Discussion Topics Discussions awarded points Discussions that earn points will answer the question thoroughly. They will respond thoughtfully to ONE other student and add new ideas or suggestions to that student s post. They will be presented clearly and demonstrate both professional vocabulary and writing style. They will stimulate discussion and enhance the critical thinking process for the group. The student will post early and READ ALL POSTS. Discussions awarded points Discussions that earn points will answer the question thoroughly. They will respond to ONE other student. They will be presented clearly and demonstrate both professional vocabulary and writing style. The student will read several other posts. Discussions awarded below 10 points Discussions that earn below 10 points will post late and have errors or omissions in their original post OR not respond to another student OR not read other posts. Communication: is the preferred method of communication. However, please feel free to call me at (386) during my scheduled office hours. Interaction: Students are expected to complete all assigned lessons in a timely and consistent manner in order to build keyboarding skills and document processing skills. Students are expected to politely post questions or comments to their instructor or classmates in the online discussions and/or student lounge to assist them in their learning success. 5 Participation: Students should plan at least three hours of study time per week for each credit hour of class time. Nine (9) hours for the typical three (3) credit course. In either an online or traditional class your attendance is expected. Attendance and Lateness Policy: In either an online or traditional class your attendance is expected. The instructor may elect to penalize absences (lack of participation) in online classes. If the penalty is implemented, you will be notified by a posting inside of class and it will be reflected in your overall grade as: 1-2 week absences 0 points 3 week absences subtract one full letter grade 4 or more weekly absences subtract two full letter grades Evaluation/Assessment Methods: Students are assessed as they accomplish the course student learning outcomes through the reading of textbook chapters, posting and replying in discussions; taking tests, and writing the memo report. Late Work/Make-up Work and Exams: NO Late Work is accepted and there is NO make-up work available in this class. All deadlines will be strictly enforced, absent extraordinary circumstances as determined solely by your instructor. Classroom Etiquette: All students should be on time for class. Attend to your needs before entering the room. Students who come late or leave during the class are a distraction to both the instructor and other students. The use of cellular phones, MP3 players and other electronic devices is also a distraction. Please ensure electronic devices are off (or on silent alert). If an emergency arises, please be courteous to your fellow students and leave quietly. Finally, cell phones, watch alarms, beepers, etc. are strictly prohibited in the examination room. It is not necessary to have approval from the instructor to withdraw from the course, but you should discuss the situation with the instructor prior to any action. Many times issues and concerns can be resolved with communication. Academic Integrity In order to preserve academic excellence and integrity, the College expects you to know, understand, and comply with the Academic Integrity Policy, which prohibits academic dishonesty in any form, including, but not limited to, cheating and plagiarism. Grades conferred by instructors are intended to be, and must be, accurate and true reflections of the coursework actually produced and submitted by you. Cases of suspected academic dishonesty may be reported to the Judicial Affairs Office for resolution. A student who is found to have cheated will be reported to Judicial Affairs. The student will receive a grade of 0 on the assignment with no opportunity to resubmit the assignment for a different grade. If a student has previously taken this course with the current instructor or a different instructor, permission must be obtained from the current instructor to re-use previously submitted assignments. If permission is not obtained prior to the submission of the re-used assignment, the student may be determined to have self-plagiarized. This finding may result in a report to Judicial Affairs and the receipt of a grade of 0 on the assignment with no opportunity to resubmit the assignment for a higher grade.
