1 Merrimac State School Newsletter Term 1 Week 1 Thursday 28 January 2016 PRINCIPAL'S PAGE New School Year Welcome back to the 2016 school year. The beginning of the term has started at a hectic pace, with quite a number of new enrolments to the school. Our current expected school enrolment to date is 796 students. However, a number of families at this stage have still not returned for the 2016 school year. We welcome all new families to our school and I do encourage you to be actively involved in your children s education and to be a part of the Merrimac school community. A special welcome is extended to all our new Prep students. In total we had 121 new Prep students who all seem to have had a great start to their schooling life at Merrimac. For the commencement of the school year we have 31 class groups which is one more than in Education Queensland reviews school numbers at the end of Week 2. If there are to be any class changes these will happen at the beginning of Week 3 and parents will be informed. We have a number of teachers returning to school from extended leave. We welcome back Mrs Bird (Year 3) and Mrs Crozier (Year 3). Mrs Amanda Dixon (EALD) and Miss Deb Body (IM) are now both based at our school from the beginning of this year. A warm welcome also to the following new staff: Ms Rachael Wright (Prep) and Mrs Zoe Turney (SEU). Our additional Strings Teacher Stepanie Williams (0.1) will not be commencing until Term Two. Ms Leith Rickter will replace her for all of Term One. Welcome back to a number of contract teachers for 2016 Miss Nicole Jacobs (Year 4), Miss Alycia Serediuk (Year 1) and Miss Katie McDonald (Year 2). All our general specialist teachers remain the same as Mr Singh, our PE teacher, will be full time here at Merrimac this year. Mr Webster will undertake the Library Literacy lessons as well as providing Non-Contact Time. This year all specialist lessons will again be 30 minutes in duration. This includes PE, Music, LOTE (Japanese) and Library lessons. LOTE is officially offered to Years 5 and 6 students. Our school is fortunate enough to be able to also offer LOTE to our Years 3 and 4 children. Years 3 will receive one thirty minute Japanese lesson each week, while Year 4 will receive two thirty minute Japanese lessons per week. Year 5 and 6 will receive the equivalent of 3 thirty minute lessons a week. For the start of the year it was very pleasing to see almost all children dressed smartly in their school uniforms. This includes the wearing of hats in school colours and appropriately coloured shoes. It is hoped that this continues throughout the year. School Newsletter The school newsletter is an important source of information between school and home. A link to the newsletters will be ed home on Thursdays to all families who have provided the school with an address. A number of hard copies of the newsletter will also be available from the school s office each Thursday. Newsletters keep parents informed of upcoming school events. The newsletter is also saved on the school s website and is available through the QSchools Smartphone App (see information below) Teacher Allocations We currently have 31 class groups. It is possible that changes could be made after the Day 8 Enrolment Collection at the end of Week Two. Parents will be notified if any changes are to occur. The Upper School parade will be held on Tuesday afternoons from 2.20pm to 2.55pm while the Lower School parade will be held on Wednesday afternoons from 2.20pm to 2.55pm. All parents are welcome to attend. Car Park Congestion At the beginning of each year there is always congestion in the car park area. In 2013 we had an additional car park built for the school. Our car parks are considered to be more than adequate for a school of our size and they are larger than most other school car parks. It is important that all parents use the car parks responsibly and show patience especially at the beginning of the school year when there is increased traffic use. Parents are reminded that the teachers car park and the truck delivery roundabout in the school grounds are not a pick up or drop off area for children. This practice is very dangerous and could endanger your children. Also parents and students should not walk through the staff car park when arriving or leaving school. Please follow these instructions to ensure the safety of our entire school community, we do not wish to see any accidents due to irresponsible actions. Parent/Teacher Meetings: This year s parent/teacher meetings have been set down for Week Four and each year level will have a designated day and time for their parent/teacher meeting. The schedule is published below. Parent invitations with a reply slip will be sent home at the beginning of next week with all students. Please confirm your

2 attendance by returning the reply slip to your child s class teacher. The idea of the parent/teacher meetings is to give parents the chance to meet as a group with each of the class teachers. Teachers will discuss such things as class rules, behaviour management, teacher expectations, various curriculum issues, homework, parent assistance in the classroom and other topics which may be raised. It is a good chance for parents to ask any questions or express any concerns that they may have. All parents are encouraged to attend the scheduled parent/teacher meetings. Parent Fitness (Boot Camp) Program free for Merrimac Parents Tina Nenadic from Ray White Robina Real Estate is again sponsoring a weekly Parent Fitness Program here at school. The program was very popular last year. Simone Doyle who works for Ray White Robina Real Estate is the fitness instructor and will run the sessions weekly in the MPC/Tennis Court area each Thursday from 1.45pm to 2.45pm. It is completely free. I m sure that there are many parents who would be interested in being part of this program. Tina will be contacting parents from last year and reminding them of the continuation of the program. Any parents who wish to be involved in the fitness program can contact Tina direct on Simone can only cater up to 20 in the session so please register your interest with Tina as soon as possible. The parent fitness program will commence in Week Two on Thursday 4 February. Early Arrivals at School It is recommended that children arrive at school from 8.30am onwards. There is no rostered teacher supervision before school. Children are not allowed on the play forts or the school s oval in the morning. Any children who arrive at school before 8.00am must remain outside the school s administration building until this time. They are then allowed to go to the area outside their classrooms. Although the behaviour of our students is very good in general, it is more likely for children to misbehave or do the wrong thing if they are at school in the morning for a long time. Our school has Before School Care, which is held in the Multi Purpose Building. The operating times are from 6.30am to 8.50am. Enquiries and bookings can be made through the coordinator on phone A fully supervised activity based program is undertaken and breakfast is provided. Fee relief is available for eligible families. Parents may wish to consider using the Before School Care Service when children have to be dropped off early to school on a regular basis. Student Leaders For 2016 The election process for all our student leaders for 2016 was completed in Term Four last year. The following students are our leaders for this year: School Captains: Brie Cassidy, Sophie Caruana, Jai Vought, Flynn Schmitzer Sports Captains: Gooding Jesse Berghuis, Grace Bowden Davidson Cody Harrington, Sydney Mitchell Birmingham Carter Rigter, Alyssa Hodda Hamilton Jay O Neill, Katia Whitford Music Leaders : Band Brodie Brown, Runa Oshika Strings Yui Okagawa, Emma Mollison Choir Tenisha Wilkey, Ella Stewart More information will be provided soon on the presentation ceremony which will be scheduled sometime in February. Merrimac students have the opportunity to be involved in this fitness and breakfast program. There will be up to 100 places available. Students will need to commit to attending each week from 8.00am to 8.45am to be part of the program. A big thank you to Chappy Steve and Mr Epiha who coordinate and run this program. Parents are advised the Department of Education and Training does not have student accident insurance cover for students. If your child is injured at school as a result of an accident or incident, all costs associated with the injury, including medical costs are the responsibility of the parent or caregiver. Some incidental medical costs may be covered by Medicare. If you have private health insurance, some costs may also be covered by your provider. Any other costs must be covered by parents. Student accident insurance pays some benefits in certain circumstances should your child have an accident. It is up to all parents to decide what types and what level of private insurance they wish to arrange to cover their child. 5 BACK TO SCHOOL ROAD SAFETY MESSAGE The Gold Coast Road Policing Unit will again be monitoring the Back to School campaign which commenced on Wednesday 27 January The Gold Coast Road policing Unit are seeking your help in again highlighting the following issues and complaints that we get each year. We like to see everyone safe in and around our schools and if parents could take note of the following and adhere to the road rules we can create a safe environment for all. We understand that this time of year sees new school children arriving at most schools and this is often an exciting and stressful time for both parents and students. Remember that by not adhering to the road rules you are placing both your own children and the children of others at risk of injury or worse. 5.
