1 South Harrison Township Elementary School District Committed to Excellence South Harrison Township Elementary School District Course Name: Science Curriculum Map Grade Level (s): Grade BOE Adoption Date: September 2014 Revised: September 21, 2015 ABSTRACT In fifth grade the focus of the science curriculum is earth and space. In addition prediction, formation, and impact of severe weather are studied and physical and chemical properties are explored. Using the inquiry method student examine the different forms of energy and energy transformations. 1
2 Trimester I Science Month/Marking September October November Period Standards 2009 New Jersey Core Curriculum 5.4.F.1-2, 5.4.G F.1, 5.4.G C.3, 5.4.G.1-3 Content Standards (NJCCCS) Essential Question How do weather patterns affect global climate? How can devices be used to measure and represent weather conditions? Are there warnings of an advancing storm? Context Weather and Climate Predicting Weather Severe Weather Events Skills and Topics trace the path a drop of water might follow through the water cycle * model how the properties of water can change as water moves through the water cycle research cloud formation and the type of precipitation that results explain the interrelationships among daily temperature, air pressure, and relative humidity data connect localized long-term weather patterns to the describe the factors that collectively contribute to localized weather and the instrumentation used for measurement: atmospheric conditions temperature air pressure humidity clouds precipitation wind identify patterns in data collected from basic weather instruments explain how a change in one define the formation of weather fronts in terms of gradations in air pressure describe the movement of fronts in the atmosphere view and interpret weather maps identifying the meteorological symbols for high and low pressure fronts investigate global winds and surface currents and explain the relationship between the two factors create a model of ecosystems in two different location and compare and contrast the living and nonliving components 2
3 Integration of Technology: Writing: Formative Assessments: definition of climate describe how climate may change over time observe daily cloud patterns, types of precipitation, and temperature and categorize the clouds by the conditions that form precipitation analyze climate graphs to categorize the climate of various locations based on the yearly patterns of temperature and precipitation factor may cause a change in others explore the use of devices to measure factors that define weather conditions describe ways that humans can improve the health of ecosystems relate the transfer of heat from oceans and land masses to the evolution of a hurricane Internet, Web Quests, wireless laptop computers, SMART Boards, multimedia presentations Open-ended responses, conclusions and analysis of exploratory activities, student journals Laboratories: Weather station Measurement of weather factors Laboratory: What do weather patterns tell you?
