Please read about this important new research, which encompasses all Americans but may have particular applicability for Parkinson s patients, for whom depression is a very common symptom. Our goals are: 1) To make known to the Greater Parkinson s Disease community the exercise programs available which are conducted either specifically for us (and our care partners) or by individuals with experience in helping PD patients; 2) To provide links and stories related to exercise for PWP, including recent medical research; 3) To encourage all PD patients, regardless of disease severity, to improve their quality of life through exercise. 4 Greater PD Exercise Newslettter Page 4 Association between physical exercise and mental health in 1.2 million individuals in the USA between 2011 and 2015: a cross-sectional study By Sammi R Checkroud, et al The journal Lancet Psychiatry published a cross-sectional study on August 8, 2018 based on data from 1,237,194 people in the US age 18 and older. Quoting from the study summary ( We compared the number of days of bad self-reported mental heath between individuals who exercised and those who did not using a matching procedure that controlled for a wide range of variables (e.g., age, sex, race, physical and mental health,...). Some study findings: 1) People who exercised had about 1 1/2 fewer days of poor mental health in the past month; 2) While all types of exercise were correlated with better mental health (by a range of 12-22%), the greatest benefits were seen in team sports (22%), cycling (22%) and aerobic and gym activities (20%). The Lancet article was cited in the Wall Street Journal (August 21, 2018, page A9). The WSJ article noted some additional findings: 1) The best results were found in those who exercise for 45 minutes three to five times weekly. The range was minutes, with 45 minutes being optimal. There was no additional benefit beyond 90 minutes of exercise. 2) For a category called recreational sports that included yoga and tai chi, there were 23%(!) fewer poor mental health days ; 3) Running or jogging resulted in a 19% improvement; 4) Household chores(!) even generated 12% fewer bad days. The Wall Street Journal quoted Dr. Adam Chekroud, senior author of the study: [T]eam sports may have an extra benefit because of the social component and yoga/tai chi promote mindfulness, which is often touted as beneficial for mental health. Unfortunately, the complete Lancet and the Wall Street Journal articles are not available online without payment or subscription. The study has some drawbacks, notably the self-reporting component, the rather wide definition of mental health, and the question of whether lack of exercise leads to depression or vice versa, but the sheer size of the sample population certainly lends power to the information provided.
