Share this: President's Perspective As the academic year begins, President Bellack welcomes new and returning students, faculty, and staff, remarking on the Institute's incredible growth and progress in her monthly column. Second Annual Charlestown Community Day September 20 1st Avenue Provost Blog Provost Alex Johnson discusses the Institute's groundbreaking new IMPACT curriculum and its importance to the future of interprofessionalism in his most recent blog post. Institute Expands Space for Research, Offices The Institute has added 14,000 square feet of new space in Building 79/96 to support the research of Jordan Green, Tiffany Hogan, and Lisa Wood, relocate the Bio- Motion Lab from 2CC, and provide workstations for the PhD in Rehabilitation Sciences students. Faculty and staff in the Department of Physical Therapy are scheduled to relocate to One Constitution Center (OCC) Friday, September 6, which will provide office space in Building 36 and Building 39 to accommodate School of Nursing needs, the newly approved Occupational Therapy program, and the anticipated Physician program. In spring 2014, the Occupational Therapy program's Functional Living Lab will open in 2CC. The MGH Institute will host its second annual Community Day on Friday, September 20, from 8:00 a.m. 1:00 p.m. All first-year entry-level students will participate as part of the new IMPACT (Interprofessional Model for Patientand Client-Centered Teams) curriculum. Through teambased participation, students will prepare for interprofessional collaborative practice by engaging in a series of learning activities designed to facilitate their development in the four IPEC competency domains: values and ethics, teamwork, roles, and responsibilities and communication. Several activities with Charlestown and Boston residents are planned. They include neighborhood park cleanups, yoga classes for high school students, and parent education about early literacy. Students will meet their IMPACT teammates and faculty facilitators in the morning and then travel to one of 30 different sites for two-hour service blocks. 2 Parking Spaces Available for Fall Students and employees can now park in the IHP's new Terminal Street Parking Lot, which is a short walk from the school's main campus. Students can purchase a semester parking pass for $320, averaging out to $20 per week. This new lot is one of the least expensive parking options in Boston. View campus map. IHP's 33rd Schweitzer Fellow Helps Older Adults Cope with Emergencies MGH Institute of Health Professions will host its 7th annual fundraising gala at the Renaissance Boston Waterfront Hotel on Wednesday, November 6. This year s gala, Transforming Lives: Education that Serves, will highlight our students and our clinical centers. While working last fall with an elderly patient during the aftermath of the devastation caused by Hurricane Sandy, Jessica Eder developed a project that would lead her to being named a Albert Schweitzer Fellow. Johnson, PhD, CCC-SLP, Provost and Academic Vice President of Academic Affairs, and a renowned speech-language pathologist, will receive the Honors of the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA), the organization's highest honor, at its annual meeting in November. Two Charlestown High School Seniors Awarded Merit Scholarships New students in the Master of Science in Nursing, Master of Science in Physical Therapy, and Master of Science in Speech-Language Pathology turned out for the annual BBQ to welcome them to the Institute during Orientation. This is the fourth year the affiliates have collaborated to present scholarships to Charlestown residents. Story. Aphasia Center Sing-Along Beverages are now allowed in Building 36, Room 320, and Building 2CC, Room 240, but only if they are in an approved IHP beverage bottle (left) or equivalent (right). Beverages and food are still allowed in the Institute s other classrooms and the Rehabilitation Labs, but beverages and food are prohibited in all other Institute labs and centers. The Office of Development will distribute complimentary IHP beverage bottles during and before the first week of classes. New Feature: IHPhotos Master of Science in Speech-Language Pathology student King Kwok led Aphasia Center clients in a group sing-along to literally send them off on a good note. Kwok, who just completed her final year at the Institute, said singing can help people with aphasia recover some of the speech lost due to a stroke or traumatic brain injury. Slideshow. The station includes all the tools necessary to perform basic repairs and maintenance, from changing a flat to adjusting brakes and derailleurs. Detailed instructions are available via an on-site QR code one can scan with a smart phone.
