It is the first school of its kind in Brandon. At École Harrison, students learn primarily in French, but also learn English during English Language Arts. All school interactions, such as assemblies, announcements and hallway conversations take place in French. The use of French is also encouraged on the playground. This provides students with authentic, real-life experiences using the French language. All communication with parents (notes, letters, report cards, etc.) is conducted in English. Students are expected to wear appropriate clothing in the school at all times during the school day. All undergarments (underwear) on females and males must be concealed at all times. All skin must be covered from the top of the breast bone to below mid thigh. This applies to males and females. a) Definition of Appropriate Clothing Appropriate clothing is that which is acceptable to the established norms of the school community, staff and school administration. Appropriate clothing is free from: - inappropriate words, phrases and images; - being sexually explicit or revealing in nature; - inappropriate accessories that may cause potential harm to self and others. 3 b) Headgear Headgear as such, includes hats, toques, bandanas and hoods. Headgear is to be removed when entering the school during the school day. Headgear, to comply with medical or program requirements, may be permitted in designated areas by permission of school administration. Headgear worn in recognized religious observations may be approved through consultation with parents and administration. c) Concealing Clothing and Accessories Concealing clothing and accessories includes school bags. Containers, such as backpacks, large bags, gym bags, not required immediately for physical education, must remain in lockers or other designated areas. Outerwear such as large, bulky jackets and trench coats will not be worn in the school building during the school day. Outerwear is to be removed and left in student lockers or other designated areas. Inappropriate use of Cell phones and Electronic Devices In compliance with Policy Use of Cell Phones and Electronic Devices by Students, all electronic devices must be out of sight and turned off or silenced during school hours. Any use of electronic devices in contradiction to this policy will result in a disciplinary response as determined by teaching staff and/or the school administrator. Prohibited devices may include but are not limited to: Cell phones/smart phones, MP3 players, ipods, personal gaming devices, digital cameras, and portable DVD players. Report Cards & Parent/Student/Teacher Conferences Report cards are prepared in English and are sent home three times a year: November, March and June. Following the distribution of the report cards, parents and students are invited to attend Parent/Student/Teacher conferences. At the conference, parents, students and teachers may discuss student progress and/or behaviour. We request that students be present at the conference so they may discuss and showcase their learning. Volunteers All volunteers must complete a Criminal Record Check and a Child Abuse Registry Check through the Brandon School Division prior to accompanying classes on field trips. Please stop by the school office to complete the necessary forms. There is no cost associated with this paperwork. Checks done through other agencies/employers are not accepted. 4 Substitute Teachers Teachers may occasionally be absent due to such things as illness or professional development sessions. When this occurs, a substitute teacher is hired. At École Harrison, we try as much as possible to provide French-speaking substitutes, but it is not always possible. Please be assured that though your child may experience the occasional day in English, their overall French learning will not be adversely affected. YMCA Before & After school program The YMCA Before & After School Program runs from 7:30 8:50 in the morning and 3:30 5:30 in the afternoon. The YMCA program takes place in Room 7. Contact the YMCA to register your child if interested. Student Registration Form Updates Please call our secretary, Mme Mullins, to change information regarding address, telephone number, babysitting arrangements and emergency contact information. A copy of a court order must be given to the school in situations of sole custody or restraining orders. Attendance Please call our home liaison office at (an answering machine is available) if your child will be absent. The parents of students not in attendance, and for whom we have no notice or reason for their absence, will receive a phone call or home visit to verify the reason for the absence. Students who are well enough to come to school are well enough to go outside for recess, unless otherwise indicated by a doctor s note. Field Trips Teachers organize field trips to enhance the classroom curriculum. Waiver forms need to be completed by the parents before a student can participate. Students may not participate in the trip if no permission is received. Home Economics (gr.7) & Industrial Arts (gr.8) Students & parents are responsible for transportation to and from Home Economics and Industrial Arts. Students who need transportation to the Home Economics school site or the Industrial Arts school site will be provided with a transit pass. Homework Daily reading is a must in all grades. Students are expected to complete most work during school hours. Homework is intended as an extension of the day s activities. This may include collecting various items, researching materials in newspapers, or completing or reviewing materials covered in class. École Harrison Parent/Student Handbook Page 4 of 6

5 Indoor Recess If it is raining or the temperature outside is 27⁰, students will have indoor recess. Students will be asked to stay in their classrooms to play board games, have a snack & chat with friends. Bicycles, roller blades & skateboards Bikes are to be locked in the bicycle racks. The school is not responsible for theft or vandalism. Students are encouraged to wear a bike helmet and follow bike safety rules. Inline skates & skateboards are not to be ridden on school property. It is recommended that inline skates & skateboards be left at home. Expo-Science Science Fair Science Fair takes place at the beginning of February. Students in Grades 1-8 are encouraged to participate. Students may participate individually or in groups of two (from the same grade level.) Students are encouraged to make their projects bilingual. Those winning at the school level continue to the Westman Science Fair. Entry fees are to be paid by parents. Canteen The canteen offers healthy snacks and a daily main hot item. Students remaining at school during the lunch are required to remain in the lunch room to eat lunch. There are no microwave ovens for student use. This school is a peanut free school.
